I've heard this is a fine version of a great game so long as you don't dock the Switch.

Either way I somehow never got around to playing this so I'm looking forward to finding out when I have time between gigantic games.

I have mixed feelings on the changes to the combat system. On the one hand the original could get confusing as hell, on the other, just having the other character for assists unless you´re playing cooperative seems to go against the spirit and the canon of the story.

I still have my DS version laying around somewhere, despite it looking grungy by comparison I might just go back to that if I get the urge to revisit this.

This is a really nice looking version of The World Ends with You, and the music is still fantastic, but the docked controls are a bit of a mess. They work, but they're not all that elegant, and at times the tutorials seem to miss out little bits that explain how things work. That said, this game is still a looker, style for days, and that music is pure chefkiss.gif

lol "a nice way to have it on the go". That seems like such a stock phrase to say about Switch ports. This game has only ever been released on portable platforms

I don't think the duel screen combat in the original really worked in my opinion. It was a cool idea but in practice it was almost impossible to look between the two screens to do complex button inputs when it was always so frantic on the bottom. I ended up just spamming right, right, right, over and over to do the basic combo which was actually a bit of a nuisance.

Honestly the best control scheme I've found is playing single-player "coop mode" with both joycons.

Worth noting, the drifting on the Joy-Con was caused by re-selecting the controllers. When you start the game, it asks you to set the Joy-Con on a flat surface before centring it. If you change Joy-Con set-up at any point, then the pointer starts drifting, and I've yet to find a way to re-calibrate it without restarting the game.

I loved the DS version and would love a chance to go back to it, but the combination of the dicey control scheme and insane price are pushing me away. No way I'm paying $50 for a slight remix of a DS game I bought for less over 10 years ago.

Hmm, loved this game, never quite got through the end-game stuff. Wouldn't mind getting it again. I will probably get it after I'm done with Spider-Man and Hitman.

I am hoping there is an actual sequel to this at some point. Nothing against FF or Kingdom Hearts, but I liked this particular Squenix IP more and never got more of it.

man, I wish they had a pro controller option that just made the right stick perform the different sorts of gestures; akin to what's in the skate. games or EA's NHL franchise. motion controls (unless they're the latest and greatest that you'd find in PC VR stuff) are just a huge drag.

I really want to like this but the price coupled with a bad control scheme (one of the most important things to get right when making games) has completely turned me off.

I’d like to see Dan’s reviews of Persona 4 and Final Fantasy XII. Since he was reviewing everything between 2005 and 2009.

if you hit the ? button at the top of the co-op menu it says what the partner's attacks are.

Reconnecting the controller does not help with the cursor drift. Instead put the controller on a table for like 10 sec.

Bummer that this has such a bad showing due to them having to use the motion controls. They're really bad, the game should only be played in handheld mode. Hopefully that doesn't turn off anyone who's sees the video who would otherwise get it, because in handheld mode it's great.

@staff Hot tip: To calibrate a Switch Joycon motion controls you go to system settings -> controllers & sensors -> calibrate motion controls.

(In this video you weren't actually calibrating anything.)

@alvarofaraujo: No, this OST was done by Takeharu Ishimoto. He's done work for Kingdom Hearts and a couple side games in the Final Fantasy series, but as far as I'm concerned TWEWY was his biggest project. The Persona composer, for the record, is Shoji Meguro.

$50 on the Switch? Man, I struggled to enjoy anything about the moment-to-moment combat 11 years ago when my standards were much lower. I like the aesthetic of the game, but no thanks.

Does this game work with touch controls when playing hand held?

If so, it should be much better in one particular regard, compared to the DS version.

I scratched up the screen pretty bad on my DS, using the stylus in the heat of battle. Even though the Switch also has a plastic screen, fingers should not scratch the screen as badly as the stylus did on the DS.

Has anyone played the iOS version of this? As someone who has never played TWEWY, but has a Switch and an iPad, I'm curious which is better. Or to put it another way, am I better off paying $20 for this on iPad, versus the $50 on Switch.

I've spent over a hundred hours on the DS version, and was so excited when I heard that it was getting a remixed version for the Switch. It's a great game, but $50 seems a little too high, even if it has new content. I have a feeling that the physical release will go on sale at various retailers relatively soon. And that's when I'll pick it up.

This game was an another level 10 years ago. Today, on a single screen, looks pretty iffy and kinda loses a lot of its novelty. Really wish they could have redesigned the combat system to support button mashing 'cuz I'm not crazy about pointing at the screen to fight.

So they didn't redesign this to let you use the Pro controller/buttons at all? It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to adapt this combat system to a proper controller instead of garbage motion controls.

EDIT: I should note, I have a DS version of this game that I have never touched. I'm also not opposed to playing this version on the Switch, but it looks like this game would work much better as originally intended.

Also, playing it with a mouse probably wouldn't be so bad.

As someone who's played TWEWY on DS in 2007 and iOS in 2017, I think the joycon controls are serviceable. You don't actually have to point at the screen for the motion controls - no IR in use, just gyros. Which means I point my hand wherever is comfortable and center on that point; moving my wrist to manage the cursor. It does feel closer to playing with a mouse in that regard.

You guys should get a hardware modded Switch with portable mode video out. Digital Foundry got one recently, they have been outputting crystal clear video of Switch portable mode using it.

If you have a 3DS just buy a DS copy of the game. It's half the price and a better way to play the game.

I'll probably get this eventually just to have it. But from this QL I already don't like the changed music. And the partner battle system was one of the cooler aspects of the original (which cartridge happens to be in my 3ds right now) so that seems a bit of a bummer too.
