This was the only RE I beat. I remember liking it quite a bit back when.

Brad, you should give The Evil Within 2 a shot if you still have an itch for 3rd person action horror games after this.

So excited to play this. I doubt they'll do it unless this is a massive hit, but RE3 in the same style would be fantastic too. In fact, I'd be down for all of the old-school REs reimagined like this.

This is the Resident Evil game I've been waiting to play since I first stopped playing RE1 as a kid because it was too scary. I can not wait to get into it.

P.S. DINO CRISIS 1 & 2 IN THIS STYLE WOULD BE AMAZING, CAPCOM, DO IT

While I understand why REmake 3 is in development, I also understand why Brad and Ben expressed doubts.

It seems Capcom is going down the route of "Welp, we've been out of new ideas for *years*, so let's just go back to the games everyone loved from yesteryear. Milk that nostalgia monies, boiiiii!"

If you wanted the original voice actors to come back you must want incredibly terrible voice acting; its already bad enough.

@sammo21: "3 not well received? lolk"

Former Capcom community manager (and Game Informer Resident Evil Super Replay-er) definitively mentions Resident Evil 3's media reception at the time, and notes (in the Code Veronica Super Replay) that there were a few publications that complained that RE3 gave the feelings of "guys, we already played this game when it was called Resident Evil 2".

@brad: For some reason I totally thought you played through 7. You should definitely try out 7. It's not as solid as the RE2 remake, but the first person view really adds to the tension and fear.

I'm glad the anti-union voice work was brought up in the QL but I'm surprised and kind of disappointed that it's scant been discussed around the games press, hell they even had to look it up while recording.

Whether it's the dev or the publisher (most likely the latter) it's a shitty decision; that said this game looks rad and the demo felt very good to play. I hope the Mr.X stuff won't be too much on the player's ass at all times, I like exploring and taking my time drinking in the environment.

This is also gonna be the first RE game I play since trying out RE4 on the Wii a while back, I'm pretty intrigued!

Looks great; can't wait to play it. RE 2 was the one old fashioned RE game that I really attached to, and this remake seems very well put together.

That's too bad about the voice actors, though. Leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

I just finished watching this after having forgotten to finish it earlier and first thing I did after getting back on the computer was buying it immediately lol... I played the first Resident Evil when it first came out since I had a playstation as the console of choice and rented it several times. I still remember the dogs jumping through the windows. I actually have never played Resident Evil 2 despite loving the series. Brad's love for this is contagious!

The logo on those green cans in the cold drinks vending machine looks a whole lot like the brand logo of Arla Foods, a Scandinavian agricultural cooperative that specializes in dairy. So maybe they're cans of refreshing, cool milk?

One of my favorite video game memories is my brother and I playing OG RE2 out in the garage late at night, just absolutely losing our minds with fear.

I have to wait until mid Februrary (my brothers bday) to pick this up, we're gonna go play it together at my parents cabin and try and recreate that old dread - this is gonna be a rough few weeks of waiting.

I'm not entirely sure why everyone reps RE7 so hard, I just played through that for the first time two weeks ago and that game is WEAK. Finding out it was written by the F.E.A.R. 2 guy was the least surprising thing ever.

you can't get mad about scab voice actors in THIS GAME and then give every other game a pass. for instance, life is strange before the storm also used scab voice acting you know. and i'm sure there are a lot more. i'm not saying it's a good thing, but it's definitely not just capcom

As near as I can recall Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was well liked in 2000! It certainly added more elements like mixing gun powders to make different bullets, but beyond that added element I think it only suffered from being a PSOne game in the era when Dreamcast was coming out.

This remake is very nice looking. RE came back to life with RE7 and it is very good to see Capcom took the right signals with that game for this remake. Well done!

The only thing I remember people really complaining about with Resident Evil 3 was that it still took place in Racoon City before/during the events of 2. Even I wondered why they included a "3" in it and Code Veronica merely got a subtitle as it seemed CV was the true sequel and 3 was more of a side story.

That said, you can easily look up the critical reception of the time and it was overwhelmingly positive. Lifetime sales for 3 is over 3.5 million (more than Code Veronica and Code Veronica X combined, the technically and graphically superior title on better hardware) to date. Add that on top of the critical reception and I think it is a fool's errand to try and argue that RE3 was not well received. Not to mention Nemesis has been featured in so many additional things like MvC3 and Infinite so its clear there is reverence with the fan base.

@leafhouse in many ways I think because it was new, just like with RE4. That and it was able to capitalize on VR on the PSVR so that gave it some included buzz. I do think its a fine game but it definitely got overhyped, especially in the "zomg scary" sense (especially since after the first boss it just because an FPS with spooks opposed to hiding and running for life.

@brad, the iconic "Resident Evil... 2!" start screen proclamation is relegated to the Original Ver. Soundtrack Swap DLC. Crazy, but almost worth the $3 just for that...? Have a nice day! :)

Same here. I'm starting to think that the press is treating this as an inconvenient truth that nobody wants to confront because the game is still very good.

But on top of this, I'm also guessing it's that nobody quite knows how to do something actionable about it as a social issue either, unfortunately.

Personally, I remember a lot of the fanbase being EXTREMELY disappointed with RE3. Nemesis was always considered a cool idea, but they lamented that it was now an action game and just felt like more of the same as RE2, just with an improved Mr. X.

I'm not really sure what sales matter, particularly in relation to the sales of Veronica, considering the latter came out on a console that less people had, and the former was the follow up to a HUGE success for Capcom (which has sold lifetime 2 million MORE than RE3 on PS1). Either way, I don't think Brad and Ben were wildly off or anything, at least in how I remember it. *shrug*

@sethmode: if anything that says way worse things about code veronica since it was on dreamcast followed by ps2 and gamecube ports with additional content and being branded as a new game. If it was such a better game, and better received game, it would have picked up on ps2 and gamecube but clearly didn’t.

The second playthrough stuff was in the original. Basically the "A" story is mostly the same for each character, but you interact with some different NPCs and go to a few different areas. The boss fights and levels are the same, though. The "B" story is what the other character was doing at the same time, and again is mostly the same regardless of who you choose, with just a few story tweaks.

For instance, you don't meet Ada as Claire, you meet Sherry instead. Claire doesn't get a shotgun or flamethrower either, she has 2 other weapons exclusive to her playthroughs, and a different variant of high-grade gunpowder.

This game is so good. Playing the 4k version maxed out on PC with HDR on an OLED, 5 feet from the screen, with headphones is just *chef's kiss* I might actually try to do those challenges things if guides come out for them. I can't wait for next gen when everything looks as good as this.

Really? I loved the hell out of RE7. Thinking back, I think I played it more than RE4. Don't really care who the writer is because I consider the writing in all RE games to be a sad joke, but the action was fucking fantastic. The game played SO well. It felt great to fight everything. RE2 actually slightly disappointed me on this front because it feels like a small step back. The ability to block added a lot to RE7 and had a bit of depth with allowing you to cancel out of heal animations.

I've been a fan of the RE series since the launch of the first game, but 4, 7 and now this remake do a lot for me than 1-3 and CV ever did.

I think the "Oh it's so scary!" angle was way overplayed with RE7, but it stopped being anything near "scary" in my 5th playthrough and I was still having a helluva time. RE7 and RE4 are two of the only games I've ever replayed, let alone multiple times, save for stuff like the original SMB series. Replaying games just doesn't happen for me very much, something in my head clicks after seeing the credits where I'm just... kinda done. But not with these games. I dunno if I'll replay 2 all that much, as I've only finished Leon's first playthrough, but I haven't gotten bored with it yet!

Regarding Brad's question of how much one can remember from a 2-decades old game, I'm right there with him, but I've got a friend who's also playing this who remembers SO FUCKING MUCH about original RE2.

So apparently some folks remember PLENTY.
