Playdate: Resident Evil 4 (08/07/2019)

Unless they end up being very long episodes, I think they've got several more than that left to go. Also depends on how Abby does with some of the more difficult bosses/areas later in the game. This game seems to go on and on.

Honestly Mike saved this episode with his advice. If only he had spoken up and let Abby know that headshots and kneeshots are the only way to use the stun moves (kick and suplex). She still thinks they are too unreliable to use and just burns through her good ammo instead.

Based from last episode to this one, I'm starting to think Bakalar teamed up with Dan is the issue for these video features. Sorry Bakalar fans but I think he tends to bring out the worst in Dan, which in turn makes for an episode where Dan pisses everyone off. Otherwise they are fine on audio features like podcasts and film and 40s. Weird how that works.

Probably the best start to any Beast video in a long time.

It's fascinating to me that no one in this video (aside from Abby, slightly different generation) is a fan of Friends or hasn't seen it.

Wow, Alex likes Magic Mike XXL? Easily one of the laziest films I've ever watched. Just a film where the cast are genuinely just fucking around. Bizarre film.

Boy am I enjoying this Playdate series. It reminds me of how S.O.L. I was my first playthrough back on the Gamecube. So hilarious reliving my crappy gaming memories by watching Abby endure this horror series. Mike is great in the rotating chair.

I hope the crew plays RE5 co-op some time; Abby plays Redfield, and all the boys cycle through Alomar every chapter/death. You're killin' it Abby~!

I don't often comment on GB videos since I generally love what they do, but I've been chiming in on the last few episodes of this series. I feel like I have to continue to voice my frustration, as the off-topic chat is just too much for me at this point.

To @sweetz' point, Abby is not engaging with many moments in this game because of the constant distractions. And as much as I enjoy Mike, he can't leave even a few seconds of silence before he randomly brings up a movie he watched. This playdate is really nagging at me. If this was a free stream series, called 'RE 4 in a small window while we talk about whatever', that's fine.

This is premium content, however -- as much as I love GB's humor and banter, there is just no focus in this series. Abby is 'playing', but not paying attention. She's not engaged. So how am I supposed to be? I'm intended to be watching the gameplay that takes up most of the screen, but apparently no one else in this playdate is doing that.

I do apologize, as this certainly isn't intended to be mean or inflammatory. I love this site and the whole crew. This is all just my two cents, anyway. Don't even know if they read the comments. Ah well. I think I'm out for the rest of this series.

100% agreed. It seems to be getting worse every episode. Abby may as well not even be playing RE4 anymore. I'm incredibly disappointed because I was very excited to see Abby experience this game for the first time, but you could hardly say she's "experiencing" it so much as slogging through it, paying as little attention as possible while chatting about anything and everything that is not RE4. I don't get it.

I think I'm done with this series too. The final straw for me was when Abby did not even react to the oven man because she was too busy talking about Magic Mike. Seriously...?

I could understand the "I'm done" comments if people were *only* here to watch RE4 gameplay. I've never played the game so this is literally my only experience of it, but those saying they're done with the series really need a reality check. Get a hold of yourselves.

@jstaunton: I get it. Believe me, I'm the first person to defend GB's style. I do understand that this is what they do; they casually talk and banter. My main beef is that this is a premium series, which to me means that it's designed to present something that they're playing, and revolve the dialogue around that. Maybe that's an incorrect idea of what it actually is.

But I can make a great comparison is to Vinnyvania most recently, which has been purely focused on the game and its silliness. And actually this series too, the early episodes of RE4 had fun with the game. All I'm really saying is that lately the cast doesn't seem interested in playing it, not even reacting to what's happening on screen. So anyone who is actually interested in seeing this game gets very little out of this playdate, unless you really like hearing about what movies they like.

Just my opinion, again.

Tarkovsky is my jam. I fucking love all of his movies despite being a lot to take in. Stalker is my second favorite movie from him and Solaris is spectacular as well. I think Mirror is his best film. Or at least the best representation of Tarkovsky's ideas about films. Really dream like in a way that can only presented through film. Really would love to hear @alex's thoughts on that one (can be streamed on the criterion channel....still waiting for a physical release from criterion sadly). Ivan's Childhood is stunning as well as being Tarkovsky's shortest film at 90 minutes.

Also, Eyes Wide Shut is probably top 3 Kubrick for me. It's Kubrick at his most unhinged narratively. It's so exotic and insane.

I remember the Donkey Kong stairway and elevator battle being a big "enough, already!!" moment for me, back when I played this game.

On one hand. i feel like part of the appeal of the playdates is hearing this off topic commentary while they play the game, as there is a lot of this game that's just killing zombies so i don't really know what folks expect them to say.

But i guess, if to really compare it to VinnyVania : Bloodstained, where that game's humor blends SO perfectly with their humor, this playthrough i guess would come off as just phoning it in then. still very much enjoying this playthrough, I'm just glad Abby didn't go off on a tangent over Ada's design or something.

How has Abby not seen Ghostbusters! I’m only like 5 to 6 years older than Abby and I’ve seen Ghostbusters like 26 years ago on LaserDisc for that superior image quality. Abby is too old to have not have seen Ghostbusters by now. I would have expected this out of Dan, but not Abby. She needs to see Ghostbusters ASAP. Film and Forties anyone?

I think the first time I ever heard Dan on a GB podcast he told his story about thinking the egg shell was "egg whites" and trying to cook some of it. How does he still not understand eggs.

I was in a line cook for several years, I cook for my family now and I was foolish enough to go to cooking school so when I hear any of the Bombers talk about food I get flustered when Dan talks about food I fast forward. :)

Their takes on Barry Lyndon are bad. It's Kubrick's 2nd best movie (close behind 2001).

And speaking of Magic Mike, the sequel XXL is easily one of the top 5 best movies ever made.

Did everyone smoke up before recording this? Everyone seems so quiet and reserved.

I love Alien. Fuck Aliens though. I hate that movie.
