I don't get the supreme love for 5. Yes, it's the first of this new style of Fast and Furious movie, tying everything together from previous movies, while also moving away from street racing. But it's also just such a bland heist movie.

The flying headbut in 6 will forever be the best moment in this entire series

I think I'm done with F&F after 8. The first hour was really bad, mainly because they tried to be serious and fridged Elena. Like the timeline makes no sense for it and it just proves to me that for all the good work the series does with having a racially diverse cast, they can't write women for shit. Post-3 they've ended up either pregnant or dead, or in Elena's case both. It's ridiculous.

The second hour was a lot better with Owen showing back up and him teaming up with Deckard to take down Cipher, but it was honestly kinda too late. As much as I love Theron, she was completely wasted in this. Cipher's motivation made no sense and for all the posturing she does with Dom during the first hour, as soon as Deckard puts a gun on her she flees.

Speaking of Deckard, for as much as I liked him saving Ramsey and generally being a good dude, it really bothered me that they didn't take the chance to retcon Han's death so that him and Dom could be all square. Because now it makes Dom look like a total asshole for completely forgetting about Han and being all buddy-buddy with the guy he wanted to put in the ground in the last movie.

Maybe my opinion will change when I see it a second time, but right now this is how I'm feeling. Before 8 I always wanted Sean and Neela from Tokyo Drift to join the family, but honestly I'm really glad that they get to have their happy ending and never get dragged through the shit like everyone else. Post-5, nobody gets to be happy except for Brian and Mia, and they only get to have happiness because Paul Walker died.

The silver lining in all of this is that no matter what happens, I'll always have Tokyo Drift, and that's all that really matters.

Regarding the Statham/Deckard thing and the groups willingness to forgive. First things first, mother Shaw (Helen Mirren) believes that her youngest son Owen was manipulated by Cipher to gather the Nightshade device in 'Furious 6'. I believe at some point in 'Fate' even Deckard mentioned that Cipher first approached him to do the job but he declined, which resulted in Cipher recruiting his younger brother instead. This ultimately started this whole Shaw brothers vs Team Furious mess.

Long story short, Dom and family realize that Deckard was enacting revenge for his younger brother, unaware that Owen was in fact being used as a pawn in Cipher's grander scheme, much like how Dom is being used as a pawn throughout 'Fate'.

I'm an hour and a half in and Vinny's recapping started off sounding really hurried like he was going to rush through the opening to yell about a bunch of problems he had with the plot, but he's still going with this same tone and it's really distressing. The way he talks about these movies makes it sound like he hates them because of how over the top, stupid, and impossible they are.

The cross, There was a small scene right before they left Cuba where Dom was sitting at a desk with a soldering iron. I assume that's where he did the ill cross mods.

This was great. Also pretty insightful. I walked out of the theater really liking the movie, but the concerns they brought up towards the end are real and also what I was thinking of in the background. I think they have to reassess where they go from here a little bit. This style of action is great, but if they escalate so much it could lose something along the way.

The character and family dynamics also need to be reevaluated. If they keep going towards the characters they were using heavily in Fate, that could throw off some of the balance of the film.

They did not address the movie's biggest shortcoming: that someone say Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road and thought "She should stand behind a desk for an entire movie"

You guys are crazy if you think they're going to reference Han again. I agree them not acknowledging it was bullshit but it wasnt an oversight, they knew what they were doing. They're just throwing that whole thing under the bridge and hoping people dont notice because "The Family" needs new members.

EDIT: I keep trying to rank these movies but it shifts the more I think about it. All I know for certain is The Fast and the Furious is still my favourite.

I don't get how everyone on the podcast was sour on seven, but loved eight. Eight felt laboriously paced compared to seven.

I feel like once we get past the announced parts nine and ten, eight will fall in peoples rankings of the series.

Tokyo Drift and 1 are tied for my favorites, with 5 ever so slightly behind in third place. I'd put 6 behind that and everything in any order because I don't care.

So, to clarify 3 > 1 > 5 > 6 everything else.

I saw 1 and 3 when they were relatively new so maybe that has something to do with it, but I feel like those movies were a lot more...intimate. Probably not the right word, but I feel like we get to spend a lot more time with and learn about the characters there. Han, for example, is arguably one of if not the coolest character in the franchise because of the heavy lifting done in Tokyo Drift. And that's with him hardly spending any time in a car. Most of his scenes are him hanging out with Sean/Lucas Black.

I feel like we lose that as the series goes on. Mia's pregnancy should be the monumental event in these characters lives and it takes up all of what? 5 minutes in Fast Five? The child is born and we somehow manage to spend even less time with that whole family subplot in 6. And it only exists in 7 so they can write Paul Walker out of the franchise.

Don't get me wrong, for the most part, they're a bunch of genuinely fun, silly action movies, but in my opinion, it's lost a lot of heart in the process.

Fate of the Furious went too far off the crazy end that it broke the movie for me. These movies have done a fantastic job delicately balancing the action, craziness, and "realism" which I feel this movie failed to do. None of the action scenes had any tension because shit was too crazy yet nobody in the cast could die (the World War carZ action scenes come to mind).

I agreed with the guys that Statham's redemptive arc wasn't earned. There was that one scene when Deckard saved Ramsey by pushing her out of harm's way and getting himself pinned under the huge metal door in the process which I think was supposed to tell us he's a good guy now, but they didn't do enough with it.

My ranking of these movies:

Fast & Furious < 2 Fast 2 Furious < Fate of the Furious < The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift < Furious 7 < The Fast and The Furious < Fast Five < Fast & Furious 6

Five is the actual most competent and balanced action movie of them all, but Six stretched the craziness to the absolute limit without going overboard and hence the most fun out of them all. Two gets a bad rap but it's the Fast & Furious sequel we deserve. It's a logical progression from the first movie, it's still ostensibly about fast cars, and it gave us "Ejecto Seato, cuz!" Four, despite setting the stage of what's to come, is absolutely inoffensive and therefore completely forgettable.

Going over the gang's individual car-sona was hilarious. Austin's "and white guys drive Hondas" was too much to handle. I'm surprised that no one realized that Ramesses is totally the Fuuka/Rise support role figure in the group, and thus doesn't really need a car-sona.

All rankings are moot if they have either 2Fast2Furious at the bottom or Tokyo Drift at the top.

I get what Austin is saying about Fast&Furious getting the franchise back on track with the Dom and Brian. But that movie is the least interesting of the movies. It doesn't have the time capsule quality that 1-3 have nor the over the top action 5-8 have. It's a fine movie but quite bland when compared to the others.

I actually appreciate how the filmmakers DIDN'T give Ramsey her own car. In a movie full of plot holes and waving away logic, the fact that they stuck to her not having a street racing background was appreciated.

Some points from the spoilercast that the guys needed clarified:

 • The "cuban nos", which was rigging the vacuum hose connected to the turbo to be pulled away, was meant to cause a "runaway turbo", which causes the turbo to increase RPM indefinitely until failure. It's totally a thing that can happen, but I'm not quite sure removing the vacuum hose would cause it. Here is a video of a runaway diesel engine.
 • The nuclear football, at least the US one, is always within a minute of the president. Always. The guy with the football literally sleeps on the floor below the president, and undergoes timed trial runs to see how long it takes him to scale the stairs and get it to the president. It isn't so strange that this guy (the russian power structure is different from ours) being the defense minister would have the nuclear football in close proximity while on a diplomatic outing. If the nations were reversed, this would be a presidential motorcade going through the streets of Moscow being assaulted.
 • Dom's car during the sub-heist is turbine powered, which is why it has fire shooting out of it. Turbine powered cars are ridiculous and usually staples of drag strip side shows. The exhaust for these cars can get very hot, and while fire may not actually shoot out of it, it would be plenty enough of a "heat signature" for a movie-style heatseeker.
 • Dom named his son Brian in the movie, as a reference to his RL daughter, who he named Pauline after Paul Walker's death.
 • Charlize Theron's hair is the greatest crime in the film.
 • This is for you, Dan.

Also, I was shocked that this wasn't Vin Diesel's first run-in with submarines and heat-seeking missiles.

He dealt with both in the movie Babylon A.D., which I watched for the first time this weekend after seeing F8

The elevator dings as the doors start to open. The camera cuts to Dom, sitting at the table. We hear Brian from offscreen, "What? You started without us, bro?" Dom looks up from his food and smiles. Music starts and we cut to credits.

Seriously though, it feels really weird to not have any sort of Brian stuff at all, short of "we can't involve him." I mean, I totally get it, but I kind of hope they find a way to at least end the last movie with something like that.

I love how they literally get every car wrong in this. I know people would be losing their shit listening.

It was a Challenger by the way Vinny, not a Charger. And not only that, but it was the Challenger Demon, Dodge's newest 840HP Supercharged not legal to track race 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds beastly car. And the white guy drove a Subaru, not a Honda Austin.

Just throwing it out there :)

Fuka and Rise have support Persona though. Maybe Ramsey gets a oil tanker support Carsona in the next one :p. Definitely makes for a better movie that someone in the group isn't a top-notch driver but useful in other ways though.

(Also re-listening to this a terrible pun crossed my mind :/. "They all cast Defence Up" -> Maraku-car-ja)

@alex@vinny Leo and Santos actually won from gambling at the end of 5 cuz in 7 Mia and the kid stay at their giant mansion while Brian and Dom go blow up the world. That's at least how I read the situation.

AFAIK that mansion is just owned by this guy (who Han and Dom know from times unshown) and has no connection to those two. I think it's implied it landed on green from their reaction, but is never actually shown (which in this series could mean just about anything happened...)

Just back from watching it. Was a great time; I'd probably put it a little below 7 (which is the only other one I've seen so far) but I really enjoyed it.

Definitely planning to watch the entire series through, with GB commentary, at some point over the coming year or so, however.

The entire reason this series got good is the lack of regard for realism and the full embrace of the silly. Also... Han should come back, and we should get to outer space. Bigger and more ridiculous is the only way up.

Thank you GB for turning me on to a franchise that I didn't think I wanted or needed. I hope for more F&40s or spoilercasts on future installments.

Not having Walker is like missing a side of a coin and too much focus was placed on Deisel's character. A cornerstone of the franchise was both characters sharing center stage with a supporting cast that each had their own moments. The former's exclusion is understandable but the latter's is unacceptable in this series.

My series order from worst to best is 2, 1, 8, 4, 7, 3, 5, 6.
