I could see myself playing this every so often if the bosses were in any way challenging... hopefully some of them are tougher than shown!

Hmmm. You got this, you've got Destiny going free to start and it sounds like that new Plants vs. Zombies might also go that route,

This industry continues to change. Even Nintendo is going in on it. Don't know how I feel about all this.

Though at the end of the day, if that means studios are getting paid better, maybe that's a positive in general? And it keeps people employed longer. Unless it's more so publisher greed.

Hmmmmm.

@luciddreams117:

GaaS done well (by all accounts, Warframe/DE) is job security and a fairly consistent revenue stream

Done poorly and you either get insane amounts of crunch (Fortnite/Epic) or "if it is profitable, don't touch anything" approaches that can lead to some real shitheels getting, and staying, in power (Riot).

Marx found out the ultimate villains in video games are called "bosses" and had to come back to check it out.

Honestly, I like the term 'free to start'. Everyone here knows what free to play actually entails, but to the casual player free to start is a bit more informative and accurate. It paints a less bright picture, which is good.

This game is insipid. =\

It should've been called Kirby: My first free to play!

"Free-to-start" sounds gross, but it's a lot more honest than "free-to-play." Maybe if the usage became widespread, people would see what a bad deal it was.

Free-to-start seems like the far more preferable term to me, just because it's somewhat more upfront. People are free to feel however about microtransactions but at least this game is continuing to do the Nintendo free-to-start thing of having a pretty reasonable max investment of $40.

I don't think this game looks worth it, but I still have to admire Nintendo's attempt at ethically run free-to-play mechanics by putting a spend cap at around the price of a normal game. It's unfortunate that there's no way this makes as much money as the gacha version of this game regardless.

Though Nintendo also hasn't been completely averse to releasing their own gacha games with their properties, and these other games tend to often just be F2P-crippled, so there's only so much good to be said about them.

hmm.. Reading about the reasonable spending cap does make me a bit more tolerant of this game. But it still seems offensively boring to actually play to me.

Some games are free to play, while others are free to start. Warframe is truly free to play, while DC Universe Online is really free to start. So at least Nintendo is being honest about their Kirby gaming having a wall, where you eventually have to pay.

"Free to start" to me means there's a tutorial/introductory level after which you can't continue without paying. If it's possible to actual play the game as much as you want, which this seems to be, even considering the energy thing, I think they should avoid the term.

How could anyone have a problem with this? You can either engage with the usual F2P shenanigans, or pay 40 dollars, a fairly standard cost of a video game, to skip all of that and just play it normally. I think that that's great.
