A few points:

  • Fuck yeah, Abby! Abby's rad.
  • I feel like cake is bread adjacent. Cake is to bread as malt liquor is to beer? I don't fucking know.
  • I'm really looking forward to a 2017 holiday special featuring Vinny, Alex, Jeff, Dan, Abby, Austin, and Pat!
  • I had more things, but now I can't remember them.

Jeff nailed it: "Cake is bread, bread is cake" (banana-, pound-, potato-, zucchini-). Fight me.

Anyway thank goodness for a 2+ hour podcast and a great new member.

I kind of wished Vinny had asked Abby to give an introduction. We got one with Ben, and since he had been an intern before, it was kind of easy to figure out how he ended up at GB. I got the feeling that she hadn't really had any contact with this industry before, so it would be interesting to hear how Abby ended up here.

Was she a GB fan prior to coming here? If not, how'd she end up applying? After being hired or before that, did she do some research by watching GB content? We got some information on her gaming history, but not really any regarding her professional history.

Is the E3 coin for BotW Dan is referring to the same one that comes with the "Collectors Edition" of the game? I think my coin is somewhere in my junk drawer because it's useless and dumb. The Switch case is nice though.

There is definitely plenty of nuance in the cake & bread discussion (they barely even got into pastries), but I feel that all those things are fundamentally bread-like.

Also, it's sad to see Mass Effect join the club of games that were brought back with a fraction of the budget and thus a fraction of the quality and the game studio's reaction is "Huh looks like they don't like this series anymore."

I get why Americans might make a cake is bread and bread is cake argument. Since you all seem to only consume bread that is entirely too sweet and not at all like real bread should taste like.

Also the term min-maxing describes a process by which you try to achive the maximum of something by using the minimum amount of resources necessary. It's a term that I've heard the first time probably 30 years ago at some roleplaying session. For example you try to do the best possible character build using the least amount of XP possible, usually by creatively using synergies, or blatantly abusing the rules of the game.

You should do the Sun confidant in Persona 5 whenever you can, Alex. I think you'd like him. Temperance has a good arc too.

Bad opinions expressed in this episode:

Alex - saying True Lies doesn't hold up. The ending stinks (always did) but that movie 100% holds up.

Abby - saying The Beatles are overrated.

@two_socks: I dropped off of AC early in Brotherhood, but the one thing those games always did well was control. The smoothness of moving around the environments was one of the biggest appeals.

While I agree with Alex that Persona 5's style isn't really for Dan, I still get annoyed with how bluntly he shoots down any possibility of him trying it.

Between the True Lies line, and not to trust Doctors I've never agreed more with Alex.

Also, with that Abby became the best new hire since Vinny and Brad inevitably joined GB back in '08.

"He also states that Mark didn't put out his eye, he actually lost his eye in the Vietnam War."

reelrundown.com/celebrities/Hate-Crimes-of-Mark-Wahlberg

Alex claimed that Mark Wahlberg blinded a guy, and he might be right, but the article I link to suggests otherwise. I'm not defending Mr. Wahlberg, but it stuck out after I did some research on the subject.

Hi, Abby!

I wonder how many people out there played all the yearly Assassin's Creed games. I was good after finishing 2, personally, though I did check in briefly with Black Flag. Like, I don't think the gameplay in those games was deep enough and fun enough to warrant a decade of Assassin's Creed games, a new one every year.

Some people (like me) check out AC every year for the locations and the world of each game. It's great visiting different locations and time periods with the level of detail that goes into them

5. Y'all hating on Square Enix, but they released the best game of the year in NieR: Automata

Square Enix's problem isn't that they don't put out good games; it's that they put out good games and subsequently kill them. If they weren't putting out any good games nobody would care when they end game series (or at least land them with a perilous future).

True Lies stops being a good movie after Bill Paxton stops being in it. It's also far, far too long.

Abby's never played Mass Effect, huh? Sounds like a good reason to finally get Alex to play through the series, now that he has a potential co-host to experience it with.

I don't think Assassin's Creed controls badly. For the most part, it's rather fluid. The only thing I continually have trouble with is when you're running, and want to keep running on the ground, but to run you have to hold in the right trigger, and if you happen to accidentally touch a wall or something you can climb on, you start climbing it because you're holding in the right trigger. Has caused me to fail a few missions that require chasing someone. I've liked all of the games that I've played, though, so I know I'm an anomaly. Yes, even AC3. I just finished AC4 a few days ago and the series continues to be good for me. I look forward to playing the rest some day. I wonder what I'll think about Unity, since as I just said, I liked AC3 when most people didn't.

I would not care about meeting a single one of those famous people over getting $30. I just don't have the gene in me that compels me to care about celebrities. I'm not saying I wouldn't take mental note of seeing them, but I wouldn't go out of my way to bother them. Especially when you get $30 for the alternative.

Also, anyone saying "mid max" instead of min-max is just plain wrong. That's not a thing. The crew didn't really get the definition quite right here - it's not about pouring stats into one thing and shortchanging others, like they said. It's about getting the best/most favorable result with the least amount of effort and resources put in.

I don't recommend Vanquish. The animations are real sharp, hell I could watch those all day, but everything else is pretty disappointing. The gameplay never delivers on what it looks like it promises, the story is completely nothing, and I'm struggling to remember any of the characters. Buy it if you're really into 3rd person shooters I guess but it's safe to skip otherwise.
