The Giant Beastcast: Episode 112

Time to talk about early impressions of Splatoon 2, Fire Pro Wrestling World, and... Zelda II? We also test our Super Mario knowledge, chat about that Castlevania series, and get deep into pickles.

The Giant Bomb East team gathers to talk about the week in video games, their lives, and basically anything that interests them. All from New York City!

I go to the movies frequently (probably an average of ten times a year, if not more) and I've never seen assigned seating at any theater near me. Is this just a bigger city thing? Assigned seating makes me worry that the theater would be crowded, which I dislike (although I put up with it for midnight showings).

I also do go to the movies alone with some frequency, there's nothing wrong with that!

Unrelated to movie talk: last night I saw a dude at a bar who could TOTALLY have been Abby's twin. Same hair and even similar facial structure. It was uncanny.

I feel like the conversation about FF13 was fairly negative from the start. I remember seeing a lot of memes of the first 13 hours being a straight line , and the lack of towns. Luckily the combat turned out to be pretty fun and that sort of made the game alright for people. But i feel like FF 13 was one of the most lukewarm Final Fantasy launches since.. FF11? ( i remember a lot of people being sad that it would be a MMO that they couldn't play because of internet problems / costs)

There are totally groups out there that LOVE those games though , i'm just looking at it from the mainstream reception.

I think Dan lost all rights to refuse tasting foods when he told his popcorn and soda garbage story.

The church Alex is talking about is almost certainly the Sedlec Ossuary. Googling it will bring up more pictures of of what he describes. The chandelier is enormous, and there are some skulls on display that show what are most likely fatal medieval battle wounds, such as large gashes from axes and tiny square holes where, presumably, some poor bastard took a mace hit. Fun fact: The large coat of arms belongs to the Schwarzenberg royal family, and the severed Turkish head on the coat of arms has also been recreated with ribs representing his topknot and a stylized bone raven pecking at it.

The best part about the Beastcast is the deep cut New Jersey knowledge.

I just want to say that I hate pickles too. My fiancee loves them so it works out when we go to restaurants and they give each of us a pickle.

In Chicago, I've never heard anyone say "Sness" until recent years (and I think that was on a podcast) and I haven't heard anyone refer to it as the Super until I listened to this episode. I will allow "Sness" though. I kind of like that one. My friends referred to it as Super Nintendo, Super N.E.S., or S.N.E.S.

I don't get the movie theater thing. I haven't really noticed any changes from when I was younger and it's still a fun experience. Some movies need that screen and that sound system.

Man, Zelda 2 could have been such a dope game if it was a SNES game and wasn't as stupidly obtuse. So many neat ideas all over, just too ambitious for its time/platform.

At 42 min Jeff says "People's impression of Vive and Oculus when all that stuff came out was that it this is VR, and its awulf and its completely cumbersome and terrible"

Really? Maybe a few people thought that, but that definitely was not and is not the general opinion of those two devices.

Of course producing lighter, wireless, and self-contained VR devices would be a huge step, but that also adds significant challenges. And a wearable VR device is simply never going to have the computing horsepower of a non-wearable.

A Nintendo DS and PS4 Pro both have their place, but the home console is always going to be way more powerful than a portable device from the same generation.

Heh, they completely missed the point of that email about weird/pointless features built into consoles and instead talked about crappy peripherals for several minutes. They even repeat the question at one point and still none of our five Beasties realised they hadn't answered it at all.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nowadays, even full release games change so much after release with updates and DLC that I think it's starting to make less sense to exclude Early Access games from GOTY talks because they are still in development. People are able to buy and play them, so if an experience is noteworthy enough to warrant attention in GOTY then I think it should be considered. I would say though that Early Access games should only be considered for awards the year they are first released for sale. After that, they could be considered for categories like "Best DLC" or the like, but not Game of The Year again.
