I don't know how people are hearing an n sound for it to be yanny.

And I can't tell if Dan is joking when he says he doesn't know if the new Smash is a port.

So glad Dan is getting into the randomizers, they are some of the coolest spins on those games I've seen. And they actually do a great job with the logic on them to make them challenging yet still completable and coherent. It's completely rekindled my love of Link to the Past and Super Metroid.

I've been playing the Link to the Past / Super Metroid mashup the last week and it's one of the best gaming things I've done in years. Spending half a game without morph ball or a sword and figuring out how to use the random collection of items I found to make progress or even just kill enemies is kind of amazing. As is the idea of swapping back and forth and using the warps they have. Through 3/4s of one playthrough so far I've had some crazy stories - going on a death-defying Norfair journey without the Varia Suit in order to find the Hammer and unlock the dark world in Link to the Past, or going through an entire Link to the Past dungeon with only the hookshot to deal with enemies and retrieve the high jump boots.

But if Dan is looking to do them, be warned that the Super Metroid portion of the randomizer is incredibly hard if you don't know that game. It not only requires you to know the map, since any item could be hidden in an obscure missile pack, but also requires you to know the more complicated skills and skips of Super Metroid since you're often doing things without the normally required items. I've had to do a ton of crazy walljumps in order to get around without high jump or morph ball and I think the randomizer logic expects those skills. And it's pretty easy to get stuck in a room since you'll often be places without items the game expects you to have.

Regarding Elder Scrolls 6,

2 years ago Todd Howard said that they are going to make it and they have ideas for it but that it's a very long ways off since current technology isn't there yet for what they want to do.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/06/13/e3-2016-bethesda-is-working-on-the-elder-scrolls-6

Part of me wonders if by "current technology" they mean the state of VR. Or it could just mean they are building a brand new engine and that's going to take awhile.

But there was also all of those rumors of "Project Starfield" last E3 which was thought to be a sci-fi game in the style of Fallout and Elder Scrolls. So if that actually exists I bet we see that before TES6

As someone who is enjoying Wizard of Legend a lot, I totally get Abby’s issues with it. But I really think that game is more about building a loadout of abilities that work really well together than anything else. I felt like I wasnt making a lot of progress too, but once I found the right combination of spells, I started making it a lot farther a lot more consistently.

@taaltos: Isn't that the same one where Abby and Dan said that clones aren't people and therefore they can treated as slaves. When prodded further on why clones aren't people they start hovering on a dark subject about how as long as the clones are kept secret and hidden from the authorities then it's ok. Omg now THAT got off the rails in an exceptional way.

There is one extremely simple answer as to why video games movies are always bad. It has nothing to do with the nature of video games and film being different and aspects of one not being translatable to the other etc. etc. You can say the same about novels and there are a million good adaptations from novel to film.

The reason every video game movie has been bad is because every video game movie has been written/directed by people who have made nothing but other bad films. I can't think of a single video game movie that was directed by someone who otherwise has had a great track record of making good movies. They are always directed by people on Uwe Boll and W.S. Anderson's tier of hollywood studio hack.

In terms of games that have been rendered physically impossible to play, RIP Star Chamber.

It was a CCG, so it might be understandable that you can't play the multiplayer anymore, but it also had fully developed single player campaigns which are now completely inaccessible.

Considering who this is coming from, to me a statement like that just sounds like "No guys once we get the tech it'll be totally great, trust me" as an excuse for them to take as long as they feel like. If they never release any details about what they're trying to do then "current technology" is just a generic term that can be used whenever they want.

Wizard of Legend was not fun, you can only die on 1-1 so many time before it gets boring. Don't why these guys are acting like Dan is being childish for being excited for a over the top open world shooter, the Rage gameplay trailer looked amazing.

I'm with you on the wii stuff, Dan. I grew up as a nintendo kid and only owned nintendo consoles and handhelds up to that point. Then the Wii came out and all that motion control stuff was more a fad for people that don't normally play games than anything that actually improved games in general for the better. The only game where I really liked the motion controls were on RE4, where the aiming becomes so precise with it.

Anyway, the lackluster controls and the way nintendo's first party games had to use that wacky controller(resulting in the worst controlling Mario Kart and Smash Bros games among others) combined with most of the third party stuff coming out being minigame collections, were a big part of the reason why I branched out and got a PS2 and later a 360. And also why I never got a Wii U, since I didn't wanna get burned by their gimmicky bullshit again. Motion controls feel like a dead end to me. Or at least something that's only good for very specific use cases.

Do they make randomizers for Ocarina of Time? I dunno if Dan would want to, but that'd be cool to see after ALttP!

I'm surprised Dan is so out of the loop with what Bethesda Game Studios is working on. They've been pretty upfront with the fact that Elder Scrolls is a long ways away and both Todd Howard and Pete Hines has mentioned multiple times that they wanted to work on something fresh for a while.

Considering the fact that we now know Rage 2 wasn't supposed to be revealed at E3 I'm thinking this hints at a fairly stacked Bethesda conference with major demos of stuff like Doom 2 and Bethesda Game Studios new IP, since it wouldn't make sense to reveal Rage 2 early if they had a lean showcase.

Also, on a similar note it seems strange to me that they expect E3 this year to be a mediocre affair considering how flat it was last year. Hell, most of the "big" games from last years E3 (outside of Nintendo) is set to come out in this next financial year, so it can't be much worse than last year. And we already have more or less confirmed a few highly expected titles being revealed this year.

Pretty uncool of Alex to suggest that the first WW2 Battlefield in 9 years (16 if you don't count the small scope 1943) would be a disappointing reveal. But old guns are boring and we had too many ww2 games 10 years ago so they are banned for life.

Also very surprised that none of them seem to know that Howard said Bethesda has two big RPGs before the next Elder Scrolls.

@taaltos: I loved that one :D My favorite though is probably the one where they had the "never stop spinning (Tony) Hawk!" joke or something. I can barely remember it but I remember falling in love with the podcast that day. I think it was a really old one with just JB, Alex and Vinny.

It always makes me laugh when the crew (East and West) pretends that no one played the games on the Wii U. That can be said for some of its exclusives, but they cite the first Splatoon as an example on this podcast and that thing sold over 4 million copies on Wii U, which is more than what most games sell regardless of game or platform.

@ybbaaabby If you can somehow wrangle the guys into a feature where you sit them down and teach them euchre, that would be just an amazing thing. I don't know if anyone other than me would watch it, but I'd be a devoted fan.

My mom and I used to go to the various euchre clubs in my city, and just shark the old ladies. It is such a good game.

@petefic: there’s also this:

Pete Hines has confirmed that Bethesda Game Studios have two new games coming out before the next Elder Scrolls, so I’m guessing we won’t see it for a long, long time yet—probably mid way through next gen. Personally, I’m not too bothered: it sounds like we’ll be getting a couple of new games in the BGS open world RPG style before then - including Starfield, which I really, really hope is as sci-fi as it sounds; I want a new AAA RPG with spaceships, damnit - and, honestly, I don’t have that much attachment to Elder Scrolls as a setting.

Anyways, on the video game movies discussion, it was just announced that To The Moon is getting a high-budget - higher than Your Name/Kimi no na Wa - anime movie adaptation, produced in Japan. If they do it justice, I could easily see it becoming the first direct video game adaptation to be genuinely, y’know, good—not gonna lie, kinda stoked that it’ll be an indie game adaptation that finally breaks the ‘game movie curse’, if so. Could open the door to more indies getting picked up for movie deals.

Was... was that edited footage or something? Like, there's no way that scene was in an actual move... right?

Also... was that Wentworth Miller?!
