While cool, ray-tracing is not a thing most games support. It could be a game-changer, but buying v1 of any new tech is a poorly thought-out idea. The most immediate example is VR: the 900-series was "built for VR", but the 1000-series was the series that actually did it well. Some credible sites (extremetech, tomshardware, pcgamesn) are saying to expect no more than a 20% increase in speeds, and maybe only 10%. Example: 2070 being somewhere around the 1080. Given how little information Nvidia has stated about how well it will perform over current-gen, I'd be very leery of their gains. If they were high, they'd be touting them from the room-tops, but Nvidia isn't saying anything.

Furthermore, in order to see wide-ranging adoption of ray-tracing in games, we need to see how AMD responds, since AMD handles the console-side of things. Mainstream adoption relies on them buying into this as well, because consoles sell games.

Props to Dan for how nonchalantly he mentioned finishing Dead Cells (I presume by "finish" he means beat the final boss once). I had a real bastard of a time beating the final boss and ended up save scumming to retry him without having to run the whole castle again because I was getting sick of the game.

@danryckert I'd be interested to know what your play time was and how many runs it took.

I think the funniest movie I've ever seen may be 21 Jump Street. I remember the first time seeing that and thinking it was one of the best things ever. Also shout out to Frank, that one is another of my favs.

I don’t know why Alex is so resistant to the idea of a new console generation in the next couple of years. Does he really not understand why developers would want to move on from making games for the crummy Jaguar CPUs that power every PS4 and Xbox?

He kind of sounds like those parents who were outraged that Nintendo would release a Super NES.

I would think the revision of the Amazon deal is partly a reaction to the closure of Best Buy's program and the lack of need to compete in that arena after successfully pushing Best Buy out and partly to keep the credit/discount in the Amazon ecosystem, so to speak, instead of issued in a form consumers can spend elsewhere. (A teensy step closer to the future of Tacoma, where even employee paychecks are issued in the form of an Amazon-owned currency.)

Living in Maine has made me hate not only winter but fall, which used to be my favorite season but which now I can see only as the harbinger of four months of two-foot snowfalls and all the parks being closed. Give me summer and our two weeks of spring any day.

Tom Cruise is one of the hardest working A-list actors in the industry. The guy also does the vast majority of his own stunts and even flew his own helicopter in the latest Mission Impossible. He also obliterated his ankle during a stunt where he was jumping from rooftop to rooftop in said movie (he then proceeded to finish the scene despite his injury). That doesn't sound like an actor who, "doesn't give a shit about his acting career."

Dan's dislike of Hollow Knight partly stemming from how he doesn't like "fumbling around in the dark" when reaching a new area is bizarre to me. I've seen plenty of other people out there share their dislikes for the mapping system initially but still managed to get past it and enjoy the game. As someone who loves to explore the unknown, I absolutely fucking loved those brief moments of trepidation and uncertainty as I poked about each new area until finding the map maker. It was genuinely thrilling, but sadly it never lasted all that long.

There aren't many games out there which can provide that sort of experience, especially games of this type where you're almost never truly "lost" or unsure of where to go next because it's auto-mapping everything from the start. Exploring the world is one of the main reasons I enjoy this genre (people call them Metroidvanias but the more generic term without the associated brand names is sometimes exploration or exploratory platformers). And this game doesn't go exactly all the way with emphasizing blind exploration, it's a nice mix of both.

Most areas aren't exactly maze-like and wind up being relatively easy to find your way around even without a map, as long as you're paying some attention to the world and not just the action. While the individual zones have their own unique visual styles that can appear repetitive throughout which may make navigating them confusing until having the map, the discrete rooms have distinct designs and layouts to them which counters that. And once you've explored these areas enough you'll have that map to fall back on along with some built-up awareness and ability to navigate them without a map or mini-map. It all felt very natural and rewarding to me. There's only one area where they hold the map back until much later in the game, the Fog Canyon. However, it's not a complex section at all in the early stages and mainly serves as a connector to some other areas until it opens up after some later game ability upgrades. Although not knowing that might be frustrating to some who can't get by at all without a map. It was a small trick I appreciated because it's what really clued me into actually trying to remember the layouts of each area instead of just plowing through them mindlessly like I would in other games which had auto-maps.

The worst it can possibly get is if you die deep down in an unmapped section before finding Cornifer's map there, but in those rare situations you can summon your shade back to the town area by giving an NPC a rancid egg if you don't think you can make it back down there alive to recover your dropped currency. And if you weren't carrying a lot of geo at the time, then it really doesn't matter if you lose it. Even if you were it doesn't really matter that much, since you can always get more.

Rambling again, but as a long-time fan of the genre, it's up there with the all time greats (SotN, Super Metroid) for me. I'm always taken aback when I hear fans of those games can't get into this one for whatever reason. For some it's not the mapping system but the movement and combat that turns them off before they find some upgrades which help, or even learn they have an incredibly fun and satisfying pogo bouncing down slash attack to start. For others it's the art style and animation (gorgeous to me), I've also heard some people just think the visuals and color palette are too bleak and depressing. Which it definitely is to start and and remains throughout as it's set in broken down kingdom, but there is also more life and color to the game as it goes on with both the NPCs and world design.

This all of this. Also besides like two areas in the game I felt like I found Cornifer within like 5 to 10 minutes of entering a new area.

I think the whole seasons thing heavily depends on where you live. For me, in Phoenix, I just love spring. The allergies are never that bad, it is nice and breezy, and the temperature is perfect. Winter here is still fucking cold even if it is still 30 degrees warmer then most places in the US. Summer is obviously shit (except for the awesome storms). Fall can be really nice as well, but the heat from summer lingers for seemingly ever.

While I absolutely agree with you, I think they were subjectively using the term "his acting career" in a very broad sense of like "traditional stage acting without stunts" or like "Oscar Best Actor" (even if I think the Oscars are stupid) context.

That being said, I also think people forget Tom Cruise has had an INCREDIBLE acting career with movies like:

  • Rain Man
  • Color of Money
  • Born on the Fourth of July
  • Magnolia
  • Interview with the Vampire
  • A Few Good Men
  • Jerry Maguire (sue me, I actually like this movie a lot)

Is Abby aware that not all hoodies have zippers? I agree, zippers suck. I don't know if "most" hoodies have zippers, but it's not like it's hard to find zipperless ones. Hell, this very website has a zipperless hoodie that is quite comfortable! I get not wanting to wear hoods if one has that much hair, though. And yeah, the stomach pocket that gets stretched out sucks but I like that pocket more than I like having things in my pants pockets.

@heatdrive88: And Eyes Wide Shut! Cruise was incredible and EWS has a legitimate claim as Kubrick's best film imo. One of the best explorations of sex ever put on film. Also rules because Kubrick got Cruise to walk and not run for an entire film but that's something else entirely lol. Cruise is a super underrated dramatic actor at this point.

Also, in regards to Travolta I'm bummed no one has seen Blow Out (I would think Alex had). It is an amazing Travolta performance (probably his best) and easily my favorite Brian De Palma movie.

@heatdrive88: eh, I try not to pay much attention when they talk movies (including the Bombcast). For the most part our tastes don't match up and not everyone needs to like the same things. It's also their opinions. Blah blah blah.

I wish they wouldn't do it so much or so often, buuuut...?‍♂️

The same goes for actors/actresses.

Abby hasn't seen Friends? And two others said it wasn't funny? Maybe I was just on the verge of the show's demographic at the time but it's baffling to me that a 25 year old hasn't seen that show in some form. I would also say that although the show is clearly not high-brow comedy, it's very accessible and is very watchable. What's not to like?

I like autumn as well, but old autumn where it actually became cold before the end of November. Nowadays it's just Summer 2 until then.

I used to be pretty big anti-zipper on hoodies, because I thought it was uncomfortable to sit in them while zipped up, but then unzipping makes you colder. But when I became older and started becoming self-conscious about taking off pullover hoodies in public, I started to appreciate zipper hoodies. And actually unzipping to let air in or whatever (cool down a tad without just removing the hoodie) is more useful than I used to think it would be.

Of course Dan is an Ash main. How fitting.

I keep hearing what a letdown that Graveyard Keeper game is, and MAN that is disappointing. I have been looking for a Stardew-like because on my 4th new game, it's FINALLY becoming a little too repetitive and boring in a not-relaxing way. Been looking for something to fill that void.

As someone who was definitely in Friends target demographic when it was first broadcast, I have maybe seen only bits and pieces of a few episodes. I never understood the appeal. I thought the chemistry between the actors seemed stilted. I actually like some of the things those actors did outside of Friends, like Episodes and Cougar Town. I like low-brow comedy, but I didn't think Friends was appealing on even that level.
