Unfinished: Black Mesa 05/19/2015

I remember reading about Black Mesa years ago. It fell off my radar for a long time, but this looks incredible. Glad to see their hard work paid off!

Oh man, are they just acting like they don't know this is Half-Life reboot/remake thing or don't they really know? I know Dan didn't play much pc-games in the past, but I'd imagine Drew played HL...

Other than that, this still looks pretty great from the last time I played it.

This mod sucks.

The movement is slow and the jumping is nowhere near as good as the original, it just makes the platforming stuff feel really clumsy.

Also the A.I sucks, the original HL A.I was so much better, look it up on Youtube to see the difference.

Just play the original.

@danryckert@drewbert I'm not all the way through the video but you guys committing to the "we've never heard of Half-Life" joke means you can't really comment on the quality of the game as a remake or if it's worth twenty bucks.

Also of some concern is the fact that this remake doesn't include Xen, which means the entire end of the game is missing. The developers claim they are working on it, but seeing as how tortured the development of this remake has been over the years that claim should be met with some healthy skepticism.

Played this mod last year. It's great, but don't think I'll spend $20 for it again.

Oh great. Another early access "survival horror" walking sim, comprised of Unity assets randomly slapped together for a cheap profit. Steam really is a race to the bottom, as Jeff says.

@theshrubber: Haha, I'm kinda wondering if I finally became a victim of Dan's infamous "trolling" (that folks claim he does, instead of just not knowing certain things), but since they both seemed to like it, it wasn't that bad to watch after the beginning.

Fuck Xen, who even cares about that piece of shit part of the game.

Clearly some people have forgotten Dan's complete Half-Life playthrough back in his Game Informer days.

Was this a joke...because it just came off like Dan genuinely didn't know anything about Half Life.

Have only heard bad stuff about this as a bad remake on many levels. ggmanlives' review was brutal:

I feel they need to put a footnote on the video that says they are joking about not knowing what Half-Life is. Cause good lord a LOT of people aren't picking up on that.

It was a free mod being worked on with no funding, in their free time after their normal day jobs, after their family responsibilities.
They've also shifted things now. A member of the development team stated that before, people would come and go... work on whatever they wanted, and leave.
Now, being an actual development team/studio... and having Valve's backing and support, they have set goals. Work structures. The "team" is working to a schedule and timeline. And Xen is their primary goal.

After spending 11 years of their own money and free time to bring it out, why would they not deliver the final part of the game when they have funding and way more time/organization to do so.

The STEAM version addresses pretty much everything he complains about. AI is improved, weapons are better. Level design has been tweaked and improved. Voice acting has been redone.

I don't know, I'd probably like some kind of military perspective of this game. Maybe like a boot camp for starters and after that they would be deployed to the science facility that seems to be taken over by aliens, or something.

Swimming in video games is my phobia. Suddenly getting into the water with the ickysaur in Half-Life made me pause the game real quick.

@assinass: Nah, it's good. If you just want to play through Half Life 1 again then just do that. If you want something very similar but still fresh then get this. Should still be available for free, too.

There is a game from the guards perspective, it's an expansion for Half-Life called Blue Shift

There wasn't really much that was funny about it, which is basically the problem.

Watching the video, I thought the troll would be too obvious to work on all but the most humourless YouTube commenter. Reading this comment section, I'm glad to have been proven wrong.
