Unfinished: Distance 01/28/2015

I saw the trailer for this on Steam and was genuinely intrigued. Let's see what kind of a Ruff Ryder JEff really is!

I love the design for the car and I hate cars.

I'm hoping this was recorded after the MP3 stream. Everyone back to normal! :)

@drewbert Distance is actually a sequal of sorts to the free indie game Nitronic Rush. As you can tell by the name, it's very much an homage to Rush 2049

They were talking about the weird controls somewhat in this video, but the default controls are actually the best, I think. The tutorial doesn't tell you this, but I think the jump is also on the left bumper, and boost is also on the right bumper. This frees up your right thumb purely to tilt your car with the right stick, so you don't have to do weird claw grips. Basically, you always have your thumbs on the sticks and your index fingers on the bumpers, and you never really need to move them, since normal acceleration and braking are useless. This really helps you manage everything the game asks you to do on harder levels.

Yeah, I was going to say I like that Dead Space philosophy of HUD elements in this game.

Not bad but WipeOut HD Fury continues being on top of absolutely everything, including survival mode racing :<

Distance looks really promising. Such style. I'll definitely keep this in mind and check back when the dev gets closer to a fully featured product.

Edit: Yep, that was well worth the - very small - download! The free version must've been featured on GB as well, or possibly somewhere else, because I recognized the game immediately. I really enjoy the style and music, excellent stuff. Sadly it's not particularly playable with a keyboard, just like advertised. I'm not sure the flying sequences would control all that well even with a gamepad. But the game is still a good start and I'd love to see this become a great title with Distance!

put boost on RB and use both your pointer and middle finger for accel and boost. so you can use right thumb for roll

I concur. Have just been replaying WipeOut and it still looks great.This looks like it might scratch that itch though, I guess there's no chance of any spiritual successor to WipeOut.

@noelveiga: TBH if you're playing the game properly (red-lining your boost then doing jump-rolls to bring it back down, repeat) you do go about that fast.

There's a great drag race map on the workshop that forces you to learn proper heat management. 4-6 cars timing their jump-rolls as best as they can and avoiding bad ramps and taking what they think is best... time to play some more.

You people talk of good HUD design and don't mention Split/Second? For shame! That was a great game, even if the track gimmicks did repeat when you played it too many times...

Anyway: Distance looks like a fun one. Be keeping my eye on it for sure.

This game has a ton of style, but lacks substance it seems. Let's hope it becomes something cool.

Edit: For anyone curious, this is unfortunately one of those QLs where the bombers don't really know the game very well to show off the good stuff. The "campaign" really has the simplest and easiest courses while the community tracks are amazing. Unfortunately Jeff got whatever the latest map was (rather than sorting by rating) so they didn't get to show off the really good stuff.

Specifically, this game has a groove you have to get into (aka: learning curve) and once you get into it, you're pulling off some really amazing tricks at high speed on cool looking courses. If the QL turned you off of this game at all, I suggest you go check out some videos of it elsewhere before deciding to stay away.

Sure does look like early access!
