" Anyone know if this would run on my 3 year old Macbook Pro? It doesn't need to run great, just be playable. "
i would hesitate, late game play sounds like its killer on even modern rigs.
anyhow, i almost bought this for my mac when it first came out, luckily it was PC only. now my Civ itch has gone away. hours if not DAYS have been saved for me.
the real question here for us mac owners is. Is it worth it to keep playing games on mac or should we just get a damn gaming pc if we're really serious about this. I've been trying to play sc2 on bootcamp for a while and let me tell yu it's painful to have to play on low setting and still get framerate problems in multiplayer.
Not at the moment, you can't. The multiplayer lobby will kick the guest from the lobby, saying there's a difference in versions. It's an error, and Firaxis has said, I believe, that they intend to fix it.
Mac port is pretty solid from my experience, on my iMac it runs just as well on maxed settings as it did on bootcamp. Pretty much no real reason for me to boot into bootcamp anymore these days, with all the stuff I want to play having mac versions made.
If your system is lower-end, you may run into a problem. But with a decent iMac or something, should be no problem.
Played an illegal Windows port for Mac to test it out and that ran smooth so I immediately bought the official Civ 5 on Steam yesterday. I've been playing happily ever since. I'm playing on my mid 2007 iMac wich has the exact minimum requirements. 2,4ghz, 2600HD video card but I do have 4 gigs of RAM (Original had 1GB I think). It's been running great so far but my only general problem with all these Mac ports is that they lack features. I can't install mods or download the DLC. I would love to do so but we get a version cut off from the bigger community. It's a big step forward and I know that I can always just go to Boot Camp and play the DLC there. But Civ is the kinda game I played windowed while listening to a podcast and browsing the web in between some turns. It's an amazing timesink and it's my first foray into 'real' Civs as my first time was Civ Rev.
imo: Worth the buy, if you have the minimum requirements it runs smooth as butter on the lower settings but there will be a bit of slowdown during the final turns. It really isn't that big of a deal imo. Small tip: If the 'fog of war' just consists of grey blocks turn it up from minimum to low and that problem will be fixed :) Looooove this game.
