Abilitease is an aspect of game design wherein a game will provide a glimpse of your full skill-set at or near the start, only to remove most of these skills, stats, and abilities soon after.
When the player character (re)visits a certain area or location that was also present in a previous game, or visited later on in the same game, with some alterations.
The ultimate pressure feature. Players have to complete the task at hand, be it defeating opponents or cutting the right wire, in the allotted time.
Games that feature enemies that were at one point unconscious in a sealed glass or metallic chamber (generally full of goo). Most of the time, the enemies break through the chamber to attack the player or are activated by an outside force.
A powerful release of energy. This energy is usually expelled in all directions very quickly, typically giving off orange or red flames.
An implementation of lore that is meant to flesh out the game world, without becoming a hindrance to the overall pacing of the game itself.
Often a timed sequence where players must escape a building, spaceship, planet, etc... before it explodes.
Like pirates, only spacier. Frequent antagonists in sci-fi games, especially the Metroid series.
Mantis-like creatures native to the planet Zebes in the Metroid universe. Normally feral, Mother Brain's telepathic control turned them into fearsome space pirates.
