    Star Wars: The Old Republic

Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Dec 20, 2011

Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively-multiplayer role-playing game set 300 years after the events of BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic series, but still approximately 3,600 years before the events of the films.

Is the Old Republic as generic as it looks?

The game looks like THE OLD REPUBLIC. It's a series of comics from Marvel and a pair of games for PC and XBOX. People know that already. It's clear you don't. I'm no fan of this game but your post is little more than poorly informed troll bait.

I didn't know that, so why would normal people know that? Do the comics look as shit as the game?

Dude, I'm not a fan of this game. CL60 and I have already had that conversation. You're trolling up the wrong tree. That said, BIOWARE (them dudes wot did Mass Effect) are making this game and they also made two other well known games for XBOX and PC called Knights of the Old Republic (I guess you could argue they didn't make the sequel but w/e). Normal people who play games know this shit. Latecomers to gaming don't know this shit. In gaming terms that doesn't make you normal, it makes you misinformed.

I'm aware of the KOTOR games, I mean normal people wouldn't know about the comics.

Normal people don't pay $15 a month to play a massive multiplayer game based on six kids movies.

My question is this: Bioware's games have usually been ambitious but very buggy. I have the same complaint with the Bethesda and the Elder Scrolls games. Maybe this is a different Bioware team, but I am expecting a very buggy game. Has anyone heard anything to that effect from the beta?

Then there's also the strong correlation between the gaming and comic reading markets, hence comic-based games, game-based comics and you know Comicvine and Giantbomb existing in the same place.

I'm in the beta and it's 50% WoW, 50% KOTOR. I've only played a few classes up to level 10, and I'm no longer interested in the game. I don't like how little customization there is, I don't like how the classes play, and the story isn't interesting enough to keep my attention.

I entirely agree considering the replies I've gotten in this thread. I wonder if the reason they savagely defend The Old Republic is because the game provides virtual girlfriends for all the lonely star wars nerds, and you're still nerds btw just read the chart. I on the other hand am proudly 100% geek. In The Old Republic NPC companions are provided for your characters and you can have a relationship with them. The big pink circle on the chart explains why this feature would be of such high importance to them. >.>

I think you're missing the point. They're not defending the game, they're attacking you...because, you know...you're an enormous douche.

Also, I think you underestimate the number of people who grew up with star wars and are now in their 20-30s. For many of those people the original trilogy is still star wars.

This. I`m 30+. I and my wife used the Star Wars main theme in church when we got married. I have several Star Wars tattoos. I`m drinking coffee right now from a giant Darth Vader head;p

When I look at this game though, I see a hybrid of WoW and the Clone wars cartoon and 3 of the worst movies ever made. I know this is Star Wars to a lot of people these days, but not to me. Not interested.

I just want to experience good stories within Star Wars. Its not the "Standard" Gameplay I'm a fan of, but the IP and TOR writes about unexplored times in Star Wars canon. I think the game looks good and it'll probably run well on most machines. If its boring I'll stay the initial month, if its fun, I'll extend. I can do that without having to hate on it.

People need to remember that this game, while its based on the Star Wars franchise, its not based on either portions of the movies we used to see (the original three, or the later ones). This game is based on the Old Republic, its four thousand years before Anakin Skywalker.

Its not going to be like SWG (which was placed between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi). So its not going to look or feel like anything you have seen before movie wise or book wise.

This is what is mostly appealing (to me at least) is that while we will be able to play in the era everyone was wielding a Light Saber, its not going to be the world we saw in the movies. Its a completely new world, from a different time perspective.

I am sick and tired of people who have not played in the beta to be putting their opinions dissing a game that has not been released and is in BETA. It's critizicing something that is not complete and saying its a complete POS just because it doesnt fit the grand scheme of things. I have read in other places that people will not play the game because it's Bioware's first MMO. You know, Blizzard wasnt born making MMO's, they did one and it was a hit (regardless how bad it is now).

This game is like (I know because I have tested the game) playing a single player campaign from Bioware that has MMO elements. I wish I could say more but that is as much as I can say without blowing the whole NDA over.

If you ware going to play it my guild is looking for people who want to join prior to the launch. The guild website is: http://www.swtor.com/guilds/125300/firstborn

Yes and no. The overall design looks to me like a blend of KOTOR and Clone Wars. But what really makes it resemble the last one is the cartoon/cel shaded look of it. The original kotor didn`t intentionally try to look like a cartoon. It tried to look as realistic as games could in 2003. This one on the other hand, I think, deliberately uses this look to cater to fans of the cartoon AND of World of Warcraft, rather than people like me.

I`m not saying I don`t like the look/design of this particular game, or the KOTOR fiction. I think kotor was a valid and extremely interesting spin off. But, of course, nowhere near as compelling as the original timeline/movies. I mean, I played galaxies, even though it was a pretty shitty game, solely because of it being Star Wars. This though isn`t Star Wars to me, but a cartoon-looking spin off trying to cash in on WoW.

I bet it`s going to be a great game. And it does have a really cool look.. If you like WoW/Clone Wars and doesn`t mind everyone being a jedi.

I don't mind "everyone" playing as Jedi when the time-period canon allows it. They're writing a new chapter in Star Wars, and I think we need to open our minds a little to changes from the original trilogy. Its way better to let many people experience playing as Jedi, than just a few elite-grinders like was the case in Galaxies.

Sure. All I`m saying is that this particular time-period canon was interesting enough for two 15 hour single player RPGs, but not enough to have me pay a monthly fee for several years. And not when it looks like WoW in space (the childish cartoon design, which sure is cool, but still childish cartoon design).

And to me, what makes Star Wars so special and awesome, isn`t necessarily the individual pieces but how they`re put together. The force alone isn’t really that cool, as seen in the new films. But in the old ones there were only a handful of people who could use it. THAT`S what made it so special and mysterious and awesome. In this game even smugglers are going to be outnumbered by the people who use the force and grenades are likely rarer than lightsabers.

Sure, maybe that`s interesting in some way, but it`s not what made Star Wars into the phenomenon it is.

@Chojin: That's a really good post. I fully understand your view. That's how it is usually. If something is powerful and rare, it'll generate high consumer demand.

When it comes to the choice to go cartoon, I didn't support it at first, but now I've realized that it doesn't make or break the game for me. If TOR can manage to tell some good Star Wars stories using the methods of Dragon Age and Mass Effect it is -way- better than nothing.

I've seen some of the later level armor for Sith/Jedi and they do look like something from WoW, and that's were I think they've gone too far with their itemization. Some armor is great and it really compliments the characters, but the heavier stuff, the ones making force-users look as if they're from the latest Transformers movie? Well... that ruins more than the fact that it is visualized in a stylized graphics.

I find that highly unlikely. Think of all of the subscriptions this game is going to rake in, you honestly believe the majority of these will be from gamers who are completely familiar with The Old Republic timeline? I somehow doubt it. I would imagine the average gamers thoughts behind this game is something like; "This has a ton of hype, plus it's Star Wars! You can be a Jedi/Sith and use a lightsaber, sweet!" The fact that it has Star Wars in the title is enough to garner interest.

I think the main problem here is that it LOOKS terrible and the gameplay looks like its going to play out like a typical mmo, with basically no feeling or captivation. When I played a few different mmos, it was "go from point a to point b and get points!", which other than sounding not even as fun as an arcade game, is really bland and poor gameplay development...if you can even call it gameplay.

and one more thing to add, by LOOKS I'm talking about the overall graphic quality. Standards today don't require you to have Battlefield 3 level graphics, not even Arkham City, and we wouldn't except that from an mmo. But at least have standard graphics...? TOR looks like it's meant to run on Windows 98. The levels of poorness don't even begin to describe how bad it looks. It doesn't even look as good as battlefield heroes (if it was going for a "kid friendly" look than at least go all the way not this hybrid real world/cartoony graphics").

I get it, it's supposed to be available to a "wide range of PCs". By that meaning its supposed to be available for people who haven't upgraded their PC's in a bit. But I mean come on! I think at least everyone has upgraded their PC in the last 5 years, which at the very least would be dual core PCs. You can run some pretty decent quality games on dual core. But even so, I would go further and say that most people have even better PCs than that.

Besides, if you really can't afford to upgrade a 5 year old (or more) PC, maybe you shouldn't be investing your money mmos (or games).

Oh, yeah, this totally looks like a windows 98 game.. >.>

The exaggeration on the graphics are just getting ridiculous. Hell, these aren't even maxed out because they're from an older version of the beta, and the beta doesn't have the full graphics options available. I still fail to see how this looks graphically bad..
