Anyone else feeling the itch for another go at a proper KOTOR game? TOR plays a lot like one with MMO trappings, but I have to admit the more I play, the more I kinda-sorta wish Bioware would get to work on a proper KOTOR game. Think they'll ever get around to it?
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Dec 20, 2011
Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively-multiplayer role-playing game set 300 years after the events of BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic series, but still approximately 3,600 years before the events of the films.
Loving the game, but.
No. The only reason they did this game is because they needed a major license to build an MMO with. They could not have made Mass Effect the MMO and expected a quarter of the sales they're going to make. And they're not going to sign away money to Lucas to make a 'proper' retail release when they could just make Mass Effect and probably sell the same.
And why should they bother? If they made another KOTOR game, people would throw fits and complain anyways. I'm surprised BioWare even tries to placate its shitty 'fans' at this point, they're not happy with anything. If I was BioWare I would say fuck them and make whatever sells the best.
I really like TOR and wouldn't mind to see another KOTOR down the line. Same as how I want a Warcraft 4 to happen but, it's not.
Why make one KOTOR game and get $60 out of people one time when you can charge people $60 plus $15 a month after that? It's just a financial decision. The prospects for making truck loads of money are better with an MMO. So far I'm happy with the experience as it seems they followed through with making eight different KOTOR games. As long as they keep coming out with more content of the same quality I'll be happy to pay for the foreseeable future.

They've already been doing that... and look how DA2 turned out. ME3 seems to be going down the same road with MP and making the choices from the other games irrelevant.
@canucks23: I still hold out hope that perhaps those Russian code miners were yanking our chains or that the data in that ME3 build was in fact ancient. If I don't get an army of Rachni and Geth showing up to back me up I'm going to be pissed.
Some of the story, combined with the music, makes for awesome Kotor like moments.
But there's no time like the present, so I'mma enjoy this much as I can.
Maybe someday...

Obviously they're not because DA2 sold pretty poorly. And how have they made the choices from the other ME games pointless?

It's an opinion based on the leaked script. If that script is legit, none of the decisions you made make any difference.
For example:
@mazik765: When a press only early build of the first mission from ME3 was leaked accidentally to those in the new dashboard beta a bunch of hacker types in Russia mined it for story data. Apparently almost the entire goings on of the game are in that build. Among them they said that just about every major choice you had made so far (sparing the Rachni Queen, reprogramming the Geth, .etc) would be invalidated by random deus ex machina. However, the level was in an incredibly unfinished state (missing textures, voices, and clippings galore). Bioware came out with a statement saying that any story data gained was from a very old build. So, it remains to be seen who is telling the truth.
@Ghostiet: He had access to a Reaper corpse, he's scrounged up more of Sovereign's corpse than anyone, he put Reaper technology in Paul Grayson (third book), why wouldn't he have Reaper technology is a better question.
And I'm constantly amazed by people's expectations. Did you expect them to design a rachni that you can fight... and then not show it or let you fight it based on a decision you made in 2007? You had to know you'd get a different outlook or reason for events in the next few games, you could not have expected them to design completely different games based on something you did two games ago. I read that leaked script, and there was only one major story point that came out of left field. Everything else was pretty obvious or already shown in the gameplay trailers (Cerberus getting indoctrinated is not a spoiler, Arrival is not a spoiler).
I took the first example that came to my mind and it's not exactly the best one in hindsight. What they did to the rachni and geth plotlines is way more egregious IMO.
You're right, but it's just baffling that they made so much fuss about choice in the series. I find it excusable that people thought someone would try to deliver upon these promises.
And that leaked version of the story is pretty shitty, to be honest.
Alright, lets try to get back on SWTOR. I'm perfectly fine with the fact this is an MMO especially since I've been hearing you can reach max level and only be barely halfway through your storyline. That's a lot of story.
"guy is evil, you chase him but don't catch him until the end, and he worships space machines."
@warxsnake: Unfortunately, no matter how much they spice up the general MMO formula it is still an MMO. It's designed to take a long time to do just about anything and involves a lot of filler. At the end of the day they want you playing for as long as possible so they can make more money. Bioware has put in far more effort than just about anyone since Blizzard in making the formula interesting so I have high hopes that SWTOR succeeds where many many others have failed.
Sure, that's why I reserve judgment until the final version. But I'm not going to lie - it made a bit wary of the game.@Ghostiet That leaked version is entirely reductive, also. Being reductive can turn any cool plot point into garbage. "guy is evil, you chase him but don't catch him until the end, and he worships space machines."

Wow...well said.
I'll probably get TOR soon, but the idea of an episodic KOTOR immediately sprung to mind. If someone pulled that off well, they would get a lot of my money. A lot.
EDIT: And now I'm wondering why episodic dev/release cycles never latched on. But that's an even more off-topic topic.
@Ubersmake: The guys talked about it when discussing how underwhelming Jurassic Park the game turned out to be. Even though it was broken into episodes like almost every other Telltale adventure game they chose to sell it in one big pack instead of separately. This was done because statistics show that a lot of people will buy the first installment on a downloadable product but it falls off sharply after that. Even the Giant Bomb guys admitted to barely playing any of the later episodes of Sam and Max or Back to the Future even though they really liked the opening installments. The same bundling is being done in DLC with just about every major game now having a "Season Pass." Even Call of Duty sees significant drop off in map pack purchases as they get into the third or fourth pack.
Yea, I much rather have a true kotor sequel than TOR. The last thing I want to do is fetch quests with MMO combat. Meh, guess I will have to wait a bit longer.
