At the height of the underground dwarven empire, the Deep Roads extended far and wide throughout Ferelden. Many centuries of architectural effort went into crafting the tunnels with elaborate stonework and and channels that carry magma to serve as a light and heat source. Statues and signs commemorating dwarven Paragons also lined the roads. The Deep Roads were the only method of travel between the various dwarven thaigs, or settlements.
With the emergence of the darkspawn the dwarves were forced to begin sealing off portions of the Deep Roads as more and more of their cities fell to their new enemy. By the time of the events of Dragon Age: Origins, Orzammar is believed to be the only dwarven city remaining. Expeditions are mounted to strike out into the Deep Roads, but it is a dangerous undertaking that claims many lives. The Legion of the Dead, a company of fighters who have sworn to give their lives battling the darkspawn, are perhaps the most active unit in the Deep Roads.
