Missed Connection
Single father with kid. Looking for a roommate to wait out this war. Must have handyman or construction skills. Must be willing to go out and scavenge for necessities as needed. Protect my child at all costs. Even if that is against me. Strong negotiating skills required. Available now. Bring bandages and nails so that I know you are serious.
This is “This War of Mine.” Countless stories play out in a management style game. In my first playthrough this craigslist ad reflects the story that would unfold for me. I’m not sure how much is procedurally generated as far as story goes but the one playthrough I had more than made up for the $1.99 cost-of-entry so i’m okay with it. I don’t need to go back until the next real world ‘special military operation’ piques my interests.
In my playthrough I was alone with my daughter. Someone came to our home for help. As I figured out the systems the game kept ramping up with different systems that I had to be cognizant of. Sometimes I would go out and scavenge for items. Sometimes our houseguest would. When you use your radio you get information on what’s happening in the world. I believe more locations to search, at night, become available. Scavenging can be very stressful because others are doing the same. In a realistic manner people you encounter in the ruined city may want to barter with you or harm you. One time I decided as you can swap between characters, including my daughter. As my houseguest i went out wanting to use violence to get what I wanted since some of the systems at play require resources that are scarcely available. In the attempt to attack I didn't know how to actually use the system of fighting (probably much like someone trying to fire a gun with the safety on). I ended up getting shot and getting out of there. Later on I, the houseguest, ultimately died. While trying to stave off death i used more and more resources to keep my houseguest alive. The imperiled other things I was attempting to do. At some point my daughter went catotonic and the game deemed her, “broken,” I couldn’t do anything with her. Shamelessly i’d go out and scavenge, wishing her dead because I couldn’t take her wailing. Houseguest #2 eventually took her away without my knowledge, and I was glad as a player. The game wouldn’t let me be glad. I eventually hung myself and the game ended. This is just one story in this game of mine.
