I've never played this game, and I've been looking for an RPG to play while my computer is busted, and I'm thinking of trying this. But is it worth playing?
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Game » consists of 3 releases. Released Nov 16, 2004
Bloodlines is a first person action-RPG built on Source engine and based on the World of Darkness setting from White Wolf.
Should I play this?
It's amazing... But fairly busted as well. A patch does fix most of the problems but some still linger around.
I had to use a command prompt near the end because one of the main doors got stuck (It was a well known issue).
" @FancySoapsMan said:slamma jamma amazing." yes. it's amazing. "Yes, super duper amazing. "
The studio shut down pretty soon after the game shipped so not everything got patched from the official patch.
People made the unofficial patch to fix the issues that were left behind.
I'd say go with the unofficial one.
I think you should play it. I still need to play it on my new computer, but I have played it all the way through about twice a year to date. There is a crazy amount of jank to it, but it is a great game. Look into the unofficial patches after installing the official one.
Excellent game, actually allows for meaningful roleplaying choices and is one of the last great CRPGs.
" Also, should I get unofficial patches or stick with the official patches if I play it? "I would probably use the unofficial patches.
also, you should start as a Malkavian because they're awesome.
Yeah, definitely play it!

Agreed. They have some of the best moments in the game.
As for the unofficial patches, they definitely make the game better. I would probably download the latest.
Although it was weird when the community were releasing a new patch virtually every other month. I would read the patch notes to see the differences. Mostly minor changes but they felt significant.
Malkavians are completely insane. Literally. Lots of really WEIRD dialogue options.
Also, I don't know if the unofficial patch has it, but get the resolution patch also.

"That was going to be my next question. Does the game support a lot of resolutions, or is there a resolution pack I would need to download.
I would actually NOT advise to start your first run as a Malkavian.
Because you will simply not understand a lot of shit.
Play through first with one of the other bloodlines.
Leave Malkavian for a second go or later, you will at least have an idea of the meaning of what is being said then.

Need to get a reliable feel for the game with a mentally stable bloodline before you can fully appreciate the awesome that is Malkavian

Their dialog stuff is just simply comic gold.
My first run was with a Malkavian, I made it. Also had more fun that first run than any other time I played with a different bloodline. Also, to repeat what others have said, the game has issues, but the unofficial patch ( http://www.patches-scrolls.de/vampire_bloodlines.php ) addresses that.
There is an interesting story behind this game. The developers, Troika, got canned as soon as the game was finished, but a few stayed on without pay to release an official patch, addressing some imporant issues. And it also as a fantastic community, as evidenced by the unofficial patch. THere are other mods and things out there for it too.
oh, yea, also, you should definitely play it.

The Malkavians, like every vampire in the WoD universe, have a fatal flaw. In their case, it's insanity of different kinds. Malkavians in Bloodlines have, in general, very fourth-wall breaking and mad dialogue, including talking to a stop sign. They are a great idea for a second playthrough.
Just get the unofficial patches and brace yourself - it's a Troika game, so parts of it are totally fucked, but it's worth it in general. The patches restore a lot of content and fix a lot of problems, but it's not enough.
I remember actually using some mods for my 3rd or something play through to create custom bloodline super vampire for kicks with the best of the abilities :P
Malkavian Females have the best clothes :) For which the is of course the obligatory nude mod.
You can get some really cool moments in combat too.
It was towards the end of the game where you go to a mansion to retrieve the coffin (can't remember the name of the vampire family atm) and there is a semi boss vampire there with a sword.
As I come in from the front door dude jumps from the balcony to slice at me, but I jump towards him, activate the time slo mo ability and basically ash the dude in mid air with my own sword. The moment was so gloriously awesome I still remember it from time to time after years.

it's always funny seeing random NPC's react to your insanity.
Huh, that's not supposed to happen obviously...
I mean the game has problems but not that kinda problems.
Okay, so I guess it's my laptop. So far I'm enjoying it. So I'm going to enjoy it even more when I get my computer fixed. On this laptop I run at like 2 FPS when it rains, and freeze constantly in combat. Plus that whole seeing through walls and the roof thing." @CL60: Huh, that's not supposed to happen obviously... Though I guess 2 FPS and freezing can't really called an ability...
If you like RPG's and don't mind a somewhat flawed combat system then it probably is.
" I'm enjoying myself quite a bit despite this shitty laptop. Time just flies by while I'm playing. I read the last post in this thread, then continued playing only to come back in what felt like 30ish minutes to see that it read. " Posted 4 hours, 40 minutes ago" "There is a reason this game is so beloved by pc gamers even with all of the bugs and flaws. It has an immersion factor and atmosphere up there with the best of them. It is easily one of my favorites even though it never received the polish it deserved.

Yeah, I'm going to enjoy it a lot more when my PC is fixed though. The 3 FPS when it rains is annoying.
Yes. As a Malkavian you'll get to experience a whole new crazy side to the game where you can have hilarious conversations with inanimate objects and infect other people with your special brand of crazy too.
