I'm a bit younger than you, but I see it going the same way. I'm 23 now, just graduated with a CS degree. When I was in high school I really enjoyed building systems. It was like getting a bunch of christmas presents in the mail that got built into an even better christmas present. I thought it was fun and challenging (in a not-so-hard, kinda fun way - like a DS puzzle game).

Last time I built a PC in '08 however, it was exactly as you described it - work. First I had to relearn all the connection names and types, find out why a 2.4 GHz CPU could be better than 3.0 GHz CPU etc etc. It went from "Hmm... this isn't working quite right, but I'm gonna figure out why!" to "JESUS CHRIST!! Why the fuck is thing STILL not working right?! Don't they have fucking STANDARDS for a reason??!!!"

Kinda sad, but I guess that's just how it goes. Still love computers of course, just not putting the together.

" If we're really so disdainful toward PC games, why did we build a PC to cover games on? In fact, why am I installing RE5 PC and Champions Online on it right now? It is a mystery! "
I know the answer! There are a lot of people on here who lack humour and take games too seriously. :)
I've been a PC gamer since I was like 3 years old and I liked this vid. Keep it up Brad!

It used to be so simple. Get the most megahertz or gigahertz you could afford (or at the price break point). Same with the hard drive. Throw in some fast ram and the best of the three available video cards. Spend about 45 minutes screwing everything inside the chassis. Bam. New rig.
Ehh I don't think it was ever quite that simple? I mean I used to build PCs that way as a teenager, but in retrospect some of the ones I built were pretty terrible and not all that optimized. I mean, they worked, and they were generally better than what I had before, but who knows what kind of bottlenecks I had.

There are still large communities of people with guides detailing how to build a good rig. In fact I'd say it's better than it ever has been before, as there seems to be significantly less bickering due to CPU and video chipset brand loyalty these days.

There's a green screen in the video? Isn't that just the office background?

At all the people wondering about them *only* using a GTX 260, they record their footage at 720p and 30fps. There's really no need for them to get anything better as they are CPU bound at such a low resolution anyway. It will be two or three years (or when next-gen engines arrive) before 720p will need a higher end card to make any difference on that rig for their purposes. Hope that clears it up.

While I groan quietly at the GTX260 that is a pretty nice rig.  Was hoping for a step by step it would have been interesting to see you guys attempt it.  Still hilarious though XD

Having gone the longest time between new builds I figured I should make sure I don't forget anything and I'm soooo glad that this is here as a permanent reference... I suppose I could have gone to that other Whiskey site, but with the detailed video here I don't have to! Thanks guys!

It's a little funny hearing Brad fawning over the GeForce 260 and it's awesome 896mb VRAM. Now we're 6 years later and the most used card in the steam hardware survey has 4092mb (3580+512mb if you want to be picky about it) and you can get the 8184mb R9 390 for $20 less than that.

Of course, I also remember spending about $130 on a 256mb card 10 years ago and documenting the stark difference in texture quality in Battle for Middle-Earth my new card could pull off on a forum.

Edited for inaccuracies.

Now obviously I had to come back and watch this again given the "new episode" in this long-running series.
