@lazyaza: The show absolutely acknowledges the fact that Goku is to blame for the death of several universes; the gods of the other universe try to assassinate him before the start of the tourney in part for it. They even go out of the way to vindicate Goku by calling attention to the fact that Zennoh was going to just erase the weak universes in the first place; Goku's lust for fighting at least gave one of them a chance to survive.

Dragon Ball Super is good

Hopefully this holds up well to tournament play. It'd be awesome for fighting game tournaments to rally around something that isn't Capcom's low effort money grabs for once.

I got physically angry when Ben called Gotenks the worst Dragon Ball character.

Small correction: Its thanks to Goku that the universes have a fighting chance. Zeno was going to erase every universe before Goku gave him the idea of a tournament. The rest is 100% accurate.

There is some time travel in the show, but you have Son Gohan as a teen and as a adult because he has some memorable moments from when he was younger.

Son Goku. Son Gohan. Son Goten. Son is their surname, and just so happens there is an English word with the same spelling. Most other characters in the show don't have surnames, but they do. That's all.

@onkel: That's the one I have. To be fair, these two games are going for different things. DBZF is supposed to be, you know, a balanced fighting game, while the Wii game is more about mashing characters together and seeing what happens. If I'm not mistaken, Budokai Tenkaichi 3 has the second biggest roster of any fighting game, with well over a hundred characters both popular and obscure.

I like Jan making occasional appearances in the stream, but somehow it's comforting to know he is in the control room making sure shit ain't on fire.

I hope being 11 months away from the 2018 awards this doean't get passed up for the list of best looking game. This nails the animated look of the series in impressive ways using polygonal characters.

Having the perspective of someone who likes fighting games but isn't a DBZ fanboy is a good thing. I'm not even sure why you're so down on Jeff when he actually seems to kinda like it. Certainly more than any anime fighter I've seen him try.

I mean, it nails it in more or less the same way Guilty Gear Xrd did, and that game already got that award a few years ago. Not that the engine doesn't still look gorgeous, but I can see it getting passed up for something more original.

My dragon ball knowledge basically stopped at the point where Goku grew up (a friend described Frieza and Cell stories to me, 20 years ago)

I can't find anything I like about this game but then i've never seen a single episode of Dragonball. Half the character just seem like pallet swaps. Not for me.

Goku Black confuses me even as someone who loves Super.

I guess he's a lesser god from the Future Trunks universe that somehow took over Present Goku's body because he thinks only gods should be able to be violent douches and because he was angry he couldn't beat the mortal Present Goku in a fight, Therefore, he needed to use present goku's body to kill all of the mortals in the Future Trunk's universe or something.

I think that's how it went.

I don't know anything at all about Dragon Ball, but this game looks like it might be fun? I tend to buy all the fighting games even though I am impossibly bad at every single one of them, so I guess I probably will with this one too.

Also, it's nice to see Jan join a video! I think he has the same glasses I do.

You need to get Jan on the UPF, Jason can man the consoles. You don't really know a man until you see him play video games.

Great to see Jan and Ben talk shop about DB. Love it when people deep dive into stuff. I also kinda have more of a soft spot for DB, but sadly I remember more of DBZ. DB was creative as shit. The twists and turns of those Tenkaichis are so much more my thing.

@zorak: @afabs515: lol yes, the idea of all the universes hating on Goku is the legit funniest side effect of the whole current arc. (But man Jiren seems overpowered.)

afaik Vegeta definitely used SSG to fight Goku Black and Future Zamasu in the manga, but I guess they never showed him using it in the anime? Vegeta actually created the tactic to switch between SSG for movement and SSB for attack/defense to conserve energy. SSG was faster and uses less stamina but SSB was much stronger.

Also, this may have been a few months ago but I feel a shout out to Bulma's VA in a DB thread is warranted. RIP Hiromi Tsuru (Ukyo from Ranma, Meryl from Trigun, Naomi from MGS), you were gone too soon.

You know what's another anime we need more games for? Hellsing. Heck, they could even go the fighting game route with it and it would work. Hellsing Ultimate OVA is one of my favorite's of all time and one of the best manga to anime adaptations in my opinion.

Would also be great to see some Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop stuff but I wouldn't want fighting games.

I hate DBZ but this game looks great...too bad there are some many games to play right now with my backlog, Monster Hunter World, and me currently playing through Shadow of War.

I'm usually a fan of the Japanese VA, but for DBZ the English VA is MUCH better. I'm not about hearing that same high pitched syllable for every strike over and over and over again. Sounds like a barking chihuahua.

The first 90 seconds of this video made me so happy to have Ben back on the couch. Also was great having Jan out there too, was nice even as someone without much DB knowledge to hear them riffing on that stuff and having a good time.

Alright so,

Goku Black is actually Zamasu from the Present timeline. He's a Kai from Universe 10 (There are 12 in total, vast majority of DBZ takes place in Universe 7). He turned evil and traveled to Future Trunks's timeline where he found the future's version of himself. At some point he found the Super Dragon Balls (more powerful versions of the regular Ballz) and switched bodies with Goku. His future version got immortality.

Then some shit happened and he was the sky at one point?

I haven't seen anything Dragon Ball related in more than a decade, but I remember liking GT, it was fun having a more lighthearted adventure show. I feel like some people feel some kind of loyalty to the creator of DB and DBZ and that's why they dont like it, kinda like Community season 4 which is decent with some great episodes, gets a bad rep after Harmon got fired.

I don't know what it is, if it is the colored in eyes, the intense expressions and speech, a constant moving array of primary and intensely bright colors, and the endless battles, but I always fantasize these characters are on the peak of a CNS stimulant. You know, just before the meth turns on them and devours their internal organs and souls.

But I'm glad it never comes to that.

I don't like Dragon Ball GT because I think at least half of it is garbage and most character designs look bad as in "edgy late 90s aesthetics" bad. I've felt this way since I saw it for the first time as a kid. It has nothing do to with loyalty to anyone, some people just have different tastes.

But at least GT had really good lighting and details for a Dragon Ball series.

DBZ uber-nerd corrections (I know... I'm sorry) :

• "Beerus" is a shitty translation of the tradition of making everyone in DBZ a Japanese pun on his intended name pronunciation of "Beers." His twin brother is named "Champa" as in champagne.
• "Shenron" is also a shitty translation of the obvious intended name of a mythical ancient Chinese dragon named "Shenlong" which Funimation just never admitted to getting wrong and stubbornly kept as canon. Plays into the Journey to the West Chinese story inspiration bit to Dragon Ball.
• Anything "Majin" which is a nod to Djinn / demon (I think?) comes from the wizard Babidi (son of bibidi... and again - plays in to the pun of "Bibbidi Babidi Boo" hence... "Buu")
• "Majin Buu" is the official name for the "fat" Buu character iteration. There were several other "in-between" states of Buu after the fat one was his initial appearance before ultimately all of the other pieces of conflicting good were separated and he became the true form / pure chaotic evil power of "Buu" or "Kid Buu" as he was referred to by the US translation. He was the last enemy in the DBZ series before it ended and then came back later as the hated "DBGT" series which then also ended after a relatively few episodes... then came back again as Dragon Ball Super.

I can't think of any others right now. :)

If anyone isn't familiar with DBZ, but is at all even remotely interested in learning what DBZ's first like... 25 episodes was in 2 minutes in a somewhat funny way, watch this.
