@steveurkel: ton of people love the prime games, me included. i wouldn't count it out until we see more of it, too. that nintendo is making a proper metroid game is far better than we could have hoped, regardless.

Mario sealed the deal for me on the Switch, but this was the cherry on top.

Now if they could just double-down on this awesome run and announce F-Zero next year :P

@steveurkel: bummed out too. I know people love their Metroid Prime, but I always found them unappealing. I'm also convinced that if Nintendo made a modern Super Metroid attempt tho, they would miss the mark kinda how they haven't really made a solid 2d mario that holds a candle to SMW in years. I'd be afraid we would get some 2.5d that moved slower than SM and just didn't feel right. Would be cool to see them outsource it to a studio that would do their hardest to represent the source material tho.

Edit: and they showed a platforming metroid. 2.5d, but doesn't necessarily look slow. Still wish they'd put the time in to have a legit 2d SM, but beggars can't be choosers.

Why didn't they show the Metroid 2 remake for 3DS on their presentation? So strange.

This is one of the few exceptions I'd say it's okay to just say the title this early. Usually I'm against them, but there's no way they would keep this under wraps until next E3. And honestly, those Metroid Prime fans deserve some good news.

Also, as someone that doesn't like 2D Metroid games and loves the Prime series, I am ecstatic.

Is it bad that my first thoughts when I saw this strayed towards, "So how is Nintendo going to screw this up?"

Everything in the main spotlight was for Switch. As excited as people would be for the remake, I guess Nintendo wants to focus on their new hardware.

Yesssss, more Metroid Prime. Hopefully this also heralds a possible VC re-release of the Prime Trilogy with support for standard controllers. Can't stand trying to playing Prime with waggle.

As far as pure 2D Metroid, there is absolutely no reason for Nintendo go there again. Other people have come in and amply filled the 2D Metroidvania space with games that are on par quality wise with Super Metroid (taking the rose tinted glasses off for a second). Nintendo has nothing to add to that space except the actual Metroid name which already stands on it's own.

Funny to see people go just as nuts for a logo reveal as that lavishly produced BG&E trailer. Seems like Ubisoft could have saved a couple hundred thousand at least!

Cautiously optimistic. Retro's not developing this one, but Tanabe is back as producer, so maybe this won't be Other M all over again.

I played all of those Prime games, and even though my enjoyment petered out more and more with each new installment there's been enough time now that I feel like the series could make a return. That is, so long as the new game is able to maintain the solid foundation of the previous titles while appropriately growing its scope to modern standards.

I'm imagining the areas you move through being bigger while the combat has an additional wrinkle or two. Maybe they could enhance your movement?

It's tough to see what it could turn out to be at this point, but I'm hopeful that it can be good.

Pretty burnt out on the Prime series, and getting hyped over nothing more than a fucking title card and "In development" is just stupid. I'd have been more excited about the 'reimagined' Metroid II coming out for Wii U/Switch, but I guess I should probably find my 3DS and charge it to play a reimagined version of something I played about 25 years ago in colour.

Yeah I really get the feeling many on this site are burnt out period. Every new release is meet with a shrug if it is a sequel regardless of years passing since the previous game. Maybe everyone wants new ips but i for one enjoy just getting a few games each year of quality. Unique stuff is still out their in the indie scene and AAA can be happy with sequels that save their money instead of risky endeavors in new franchises that may not stick.

Well i'm hyped. There have been dozens of 2D Metroid clones over the years, and while i've enjoyed them I kept expecting/waiting for a game (or games) to fill the void the Prime series left yet there hasnt been any.

I'm not looking for new IP. The first Prime was amazing, and by the end of 2 I was pretty over it. I don't recall if I bought 3 or how far into it I got if I did. I've been wanting a new high-budget (non-handheld or remake) Metroid on the level of Super Metroid for well, like since Super Metroid- so 23 years. Other M sounded like a massive bust, and there's other games in the genre, sure. Some I've played, some I still need to. I want some Metroid ass Metroid. One of the most loved Nintendo Franchises that gets perhaps the coldest shoulder. Is that so much to ask for?

Meh. I'll reserve my enthusiasm until after it's revealed whether or not it's another patronizing and misogynistic character assassination in the vein of Other M.

In the Year of Our Lord Wonder Woman, you best not f*** it up, Nintendo Japan!

Then again... Nintendo fans are just as bad as Apple fans. Nintendo could murder their whole family (or release Zelda: Skyward Sword) and people would still be tripping all over themselves to give the game a 10/10.

@jaecee: It's still pretty weird to say you are burnt out on a franchise which didn't have a new release in over 10 years. Plenty of really good 2D Metrovania style games came out in that time span to actually get burned out on, the same can't be said about games comparable to Prime.

Ok rare occassion were your not those gamers who are super jaded about the new announcements cause their burnt out on older games and sequels and just want new IPs. New IPs are super risky and hard to get publisher backing from. Like going to someones house and saying i have 3 great cars that you can reiterate on and definitely make back 2x your money or break even with but i wanna try this new idea that will be loved but wont catch on till like sequel 2...oh and i need as much money to make it as the great cars i have here that will again definitely make you money.

Anyway I see your point. Its like people still waiting for power stone 3 (Me). You feel like you will never get the game you want and have to look elsewhere (people tell me smash bros but its not the same). Other companies just dont do metroid like the metroid you know (Ori, Axion Verge, Guacamelee!, Batman). Honestly the best you can hope for is playing their old games you missed out on. People said they didnt like Other M cause the main character was kinda submissive unlike the personality we expected. I played Other M for my first metroid so i had no idea. For the short time i played it the gameplay seemed cool (2.5D/3D mix). Id give it a chance before dismissing it cause others hated it. Just skip the storyline if necessary.
