I was going to jokingly refer to this as Todd McFarlane's Middle Earth, but honestly, I don't think McFarlane is even as edgelord as this (nor do I think he'd miss the point as much as creating a "good guy" one ring)

I will probably play this, but I have a lot of trouble with it, story-wise. Sauron had become so something-else, that there could not be any 'fair' (viewable) human form of him anymore. A little bit of where Shodan was maybe going in the end, if I remember right .

I guess this be a video game...

Weird how this trailer is very story-heavy as that was the least interesting part of the last game. Like I don't really care about Talon or whatever his name was. He was the most boring part of that game and the whole story was just generic as all hell.

Couple things here.

1) It's called the One Ring for a reason. Now there's another incredible ring of power? Might as well call the game The Lord of the Rings 2 if you're going that far.

2) The Lord of the Rings has such a rich musical background to it, both in the books and in the movies. Are you sure this generic video game trailer pablum was the best you could do, lads? Did the decapitations not go as nicely with actual music?

Why didn't they just call this game "Middle Earth: Lord of Mordor"?

Great so in one e-three EA is destroying the continuity of both star wars AND lord of the rings. Good to see there lack of care extends to everything I guess...sigh. Ah well not like I was expecting them to have any sense of or care for continuity after the first game I suppose anyway...

@moregrammarplz glad to see I was not the only one annoyed by this...sigh for the days when LOTRO cared about continuity.

I mean... there were several rings of power. It's just that Sauron's was the most powerful and specifically made in secret to control all the rings that he helped Celebrimbor make and give to the elves, dwarves, and men in the first place. The central conceit here seems to be that Celebrimbor found a way to make a new ring outside of Sauron's control.

Sorry! I read The Silmarillion earlier this year and spent some time poking around various Lord of the Rings wikis afterwards.

But yeah, Tolkien would turn over in his grave if he knew what was being done with his universe in this game. It looks like Monolith knows a little something about Tolkien's universe and kinda doesn't give a fuck.

Anyway, I couldn't get into Shadow of Mordor (because I thought it was boring, not because of how much it doesn't care about staying true to Tolkien's universe) but this looks like some decent dumb fantasy fun so I'll probably also give it a shot someday and only get a third of the way through or so.

A fellow Tolkien nerd. Fantastic. Let's get in some trouble.

I'm aware there were many rings of power given to the various races of Middle-earth, but I was under the impression that their powers were fairly limited in scope compared to the One Ring. Mostly they just imbued their wearers with the power to inspire others, encouraging healing in the wounded, etcetera. Some provided limited invisibility like the One Ring. But none were as powerful as the One Ring, which provided invisibility, slowed aging, and slowly gained control over the mind of the one who carried it.

Judging from this trailer, this new ring (The Two Ring?) is similarly powerful, which kind of bugs me.

To this day I lament the cancellation of The White Council which was to be an Elder Scrolls-style Lord of the Rings game, back in the late 2000s.

Where were you people when the first game came out? That one wasn't true to the source material either. So why are you guys disappointed by this one?

ah so this didn't come out as part of the EA press conference? ah ok then. Still who ever is giving out these licenses to people who don't care about the lore should stop.

It was truer than this...but yes I complained about that one also.
