Ghostwire Tokyo: First Impressions

finally i can know just what the hell this game actually is

This game looked worse and worse as footage became available. It looks pretty bad honestly.

I don't know anything about how this game plays (typing ahead of video) but am 99% sure I'm buying based on art alone tbh :eyes:

It's disappointing to hear how lame the gameplay is. It's got a great look to it though. Maybe I should just go back and finish The Evil Within 2.

Despite the issues with gameplay, I will still give it a chance when it comes to Game Pass

bummed to hear they're not feeling it, this one looked like it had a lot of potential. thankfully I'll still be playing elden ring for the foreseeable future anyway

Great video by the way. Jess and Jeff do an excellent job breaking down the strengths and the weaknesses of this game.

Bummed that the combat doesn't seem to control or feel that great. I'm guessing they went first-person so the player gets to see all of the cool Dr. Strange spell-effects. Looks like the combat is lacking any weight or pull to the attacks. Also, as Jess/Jeff mentioned, the lack of a dodge.

Also, they never mentioned if performance mode helped with the sluggish gameplay.

I'd just like to fly a free-camera around and check out the city. Other than that, I don't know about this one.

This game seems like it's in first-person because it's an immersive sim (I get a ton of Prey vibes from this footage), and most of Jess' complaints seem like she doesn't like that the game isn't Yakuza, a third-person action-adventure game. The combat sure doesn't look good, but that's pretty true for the immersive sim genre across the board. I'll give it a chance on GamePass for sure, but a lot of the complaints feel like Jerf and Jess wanted to play a different game rather than meeting it on the game's terms.

@chumplord: Just based on their commentary, the sluggishness seems to be more a creative choice, rather than a technical hiccup or limitation.

Let me just say, people that have said that horror games are not meant to control good by design have always been absolutely wrong.

I don't know, this doesn't look bad? I obviously can't say how it feels to play it, but nothing I'm seeing in this video looks too bad.

Looks like a video game. It's too bad they aren't so jazzed on it, and it seems it doesn't strike a satisfying balance out of the gate. That being said I'm definitely still interested in trying it out for myself.

Eh, none of this is putting me off. I don't necessarily gel with either Jess or JB's professional opinions on games very often, so I'm just enjoying the early look and will play it regardless.

So it's like Killer 7. Great presentation, but bad controls which make overall gameplay taxing. I still want to play it and probably wait for a sale if the gameplay does open up since this is a very brief first look. However, if the overall reviews are very bad, then I might skip it.

@chumplord: This game looks like ca ca, especially for a full price "AAA" title. The graphics are flat and separated from the background, like clip art.

It looks like it controls like a third person game that was sucked into a first person perspective, kind of like gta 5 did when it added the first person camera.

Technically, Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village are first-person shooters, maybe?

Even if it is first-person, they could add a dodge. Personally, a dodge button makes pretty much any game better. I will say I haven't enjoyed a single game from this studio, unfortunately.

Edit: Unless it's a stealth game, wasting upgrades to speed up animations is unforgivable.

I'd like to see this game played with mouse and keyboard or hear if that improves the experience at all.

The enemies don’t seem very threatening.

Strange that this would have been better as a life in Tokyo sim. I'd rather work in a ramen shop than fight the ghosts in this game.

The environment design is fucking fantastic.

I'm still into the vibe of it but yeah, after seeing some raw gameplay, even from the video the controls look clunky and slow. The trailers made it seem like Japanese Ghost Doom and it's definitely not that. Maybe I'll wait for Game Pass?

I don't think the Yakuza comparisons are fair. The only similarity is that they are both set in a part of Tokyo. I think all criticisms look and sound accurate just not the comparison.

I feel like I'd have the same issues with this as I did The Evil Within. Really cool idea, just doesn't play so well.

This looks really cool, maybe not super impressive, but it's nice to know what this game is now and while it may look a tad bit lame in some aspects, the art direction and setting is going to be enough to capture me. I'll 100% game pass this game when it finally comes to Xbox.

Ouch. Looks like something went terribly wrong in the gameplay department. That's a shame; the presentation is great and the concepts are cool.

It's interesting that one of the complaints is that dogs don't give you enough rewards when you feed them. Because feeding poor stray dogs itself isn't an enough reward on its own. I mean I get it - it's a video game - everything has to be part of a "system", but it's interesting... When there are cats or dogs in a game we expect to be able to pet them without any external rewards in return, but why is it different when it comes to feeding them?

This game may be a bummer; but Jeff/Jess are hilarious a QL team; <3
