Golem is a PlayStation VR Project from Highwire Games

If I'm watching this right, I'll put on a headset to control a girl... who's wearing a blindfold... that lets her control a golem. Right?

So is this going to be in first-person, or third?

Don't worry about it, just chillax on the couch and kill some dudes, no one else is making games like these, it's environmental storytelling.

I'm still not entirely sold on this VR headset stuff. I'm getting the distinct impression that it'll only be good for games specifically designed for it, kind of like the Wii and its motion controls.

The Wii did great... with on-rail games or things specifically designed around its kind of shoddy camera angle controls (seriously, pointing the wii-mote to the side of the screen to slowly turn the view never felt good or faster than a joystick / mouse).

I could see this headset working great with on-rail games like Rez or House of the Dead. I could see it working very well with a first person racing game or flying game in which it merely controlled the camera angles of your cockpit view (like in elite dangerous with the oculus rift) while actual turning was dedicated to a joystick.

However, what about games like Assassin's Creed, The Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, or Call of Duty. Call me what names you may, but I rather like AAA games. What possible value does this VR headset have for those? If it's answer to solving camera control issues for these products would be to just have me use a regular dual-stick controller while wearing the headset, what's the point? To strap a miniature TV to my head and be snickered at each time I trip on the dog?

Eh. Waiting to see on this one. Maybe there's more value to this fad than I can perceive... or maybe it's the motion control / 3D TV / perennial whatever craze anew.:-P Edit addition: Also, wow... I'm a pessimist today, apparently. Haha.

2017, the year of... tiny screens two inches from your eyeball, otherwise known as, "THE FUTURE!" People who aren't shills who've tried this stuff say you can get the same effect by holding your eyelid open and pressing a smart phone against your eyeball.

Maybe this will be like a new Robot Alchemic Drive... I still see a lot of potential in VR for controlling characters in 3rd person while looking at the battlefield in first person.

I really want to spectate a DOTA 2 match while having the map splayed out in 3d on the floor with and the ability to walk around it.

So everyone who likes VR is a shill? And how high is the shill percentage among naysayers?

@lazyimperial: I think what potentially could be cool with VR is some new types of games and concept. In a way I totally agree with you about VR only working with games designed for VR, but I think that is great and hopfully we will get some new interesting takes on video games as a creative medium.

p.s by that I don't mean that I want rail shooters hehe, I want new cool stuff that I can't think of because I'm not a developer.

I have a really bad feeling that the first round of VR games are going to very reminiscent of Kinect and have absolutely no substance. I kinda just want VR adapted into games like Fallout 4 so I can look around while I am running and get lost in the world all the "Built for VR" experiences seem like one trick ponies of course this showed zero gameplay but somehow that is even more concerning.

I'll be happy with VR as long as someone renders, like, a historically accurate version of the Roman colosseum as it was at its height and I get to sit in the audience. Things like that are the true promise or VR for me.

This game seems neat! One thing I worry about, though, is the lack of tactical feedback when you push the pillars out of the way. That's the one thing taking me from "I exist in this world" (which I think is a strong enough sensation to overcome the need for traditionally "good" gameplay) to "Iunno, I'm an ethereal spirit inhabiting this golem. I'm a ghost in this world as opposed to a corporeal form."

@mandelbrot: I'm not a shill. VR is nothing like holding a phone close to your face. You're bashing something -- and much worse, bashing the people who love it -- without having even a clue what experiencing it is like. That's your right, but I would be remiss if I didn't remark on what a foolish look this is for you.

And his complaint against VR is that the screen is.. too close to your eyes? Also, thinking VR is just putting a tiny screen close to your eyes is a gross misunderstanding of the technology.

The door in that girls room is seriously drafty. I just want to jam some insulation in those seams.
