what do you people think of the game? Also how many levels did you finish on intensity 9.0?

the game was easy to beat and almost all the weapons I have are really strong. I already beat that level on intensity 9.0 ( I find it really funny the way people act when they first play the game).

since they didnt even review this game might as well talk about why this game is good.

loot loot loot loot loot

crafting crafting crafting crafting

gems gems gems gems

multiplayer multiplayer multiplayer

seriously this game pwns

this might be my fav story in any nintendo game ever. the plot twists are as crazy as metal gear solid, and their balls to talk about such serious subjects is so respectable. not to mention the amazing gameplay and visuals!

Definitely don't agree with the "play it with the stand or don't play it at all" stance. It certainly isn't the most comfortable game to play in the world, but I have no problem playing through multiple levels without the stand. When I put it down it's because I want a break, not because of wrist fatigue.

I can totally understand Brad's situation with his wrist being a bit more sensitive than others, but if anything that should make him a bit more cautious about what he determines to the general audience.

Anyway, the game fucking owns. The controls will always be debatable, but once I got the hang of them I think they work great. But that aside, everything else about this game is so undeniably sharp that anyone should give it a chance.

It's seriously great, and a damn near perfect direction for Pit and company to go. Wether you decide to play it on the stand or not (and trust me, there is an option there depending who you are), people should for sure be grabbing this game if they've got a 3DS.

This game looks really awesome... I'm pleasantly surprised! The music is old school and hardcore! It's really a shame it's a pain to play this gorgeous game. Reminds me a little bit of Space Harrier.

This is definitely not what I was expecting. I was expecting a lot less anime, distracting pointless self-references, incessant crappy dialog, awful jokes, and awkward controls.

Great quick look, guys! It told me everything I need to know about this game.

@NapTimeSleeper: While the controls will never be entirely comfortable, the game gives you enough options for control schemes that you'll be able to at least find a 'least uncomfortable' control scheme (the one I use doesn't use the stylus at all for instance). I also never use the stand and have no problems without it, but it seems like that is not case for some people.

Normally, bad controls are a game-breaker for me, but every other aspect of the game is so well-made that I'd say they are definitely worth putting up with.

I play it without the stand fine. Its not the most comfortable, but I have found the rest of the game worth it. The AR Cards fight, by pointing the arrows at the bottom toward each other.

You say "weird" and I say "this game would be tedious as shit if it didn't have that."

Wow. Actually, take a shot every time they say "weird" in this Quick Look. You'll die of alcohol poisoning. It's a video game, guys. They were invented a long time ago.

Don't assume every time he says "weird," he means "bad." I'm with him in that it is weird as in unexpected and a strange fit for the game. When you hear "new kid Icarus game" you don't automatically think fourth wall breaking jokes CONSTANTLY.

Why not? They had to add something. The original didn't exactly have a lot of personality.

No one is objecting to the weirdness. They're just pointing it out... because it's fucking weird.

Not really. There are plenty of self-referential games. Especially on a handheld. And especially from long-dead franchises seeing a revival.

There's basically nothing weird about this at all. Except, you know, that they made a Kid Icarus game.

Its weird because most video games don't typically break the forth wall. Hell you don't see that in a lot of entertainment in general.

While I appreciate Sakurai's attention to detail and kitchen sink approach to game design, the actual gameplay here doesn't look too fun. I hope he can make another great Kirby, Smash Bros.(I really can't wait to see this done on the WiiU), or original IP game soon for the Wii U or something.

Ttocs, imagine going to a sports site for sports fans by sport fans blah blah and one of the top editors claims the quarterback is throwing the basketball down the court scoring holes-in-ones and just didn't seem to honestly enjoy sports or really understand them in general. That's Brad. He doesn't seem interested in the games he plays, educated about the games or the past in the series, or having any amount of fun while playing them. Honestly, the guy sounds like a boring voice to even have to listen to while not understanding how to play the game you're genuinely interested in. If you're not genuinely interested in the games you are playing through and interested enough to do even slight research for an audience of people that are fans of video games, what's the point?

I've felt that way about many of the videos Brad has done, he just didn't seem genuinely interested in doing them or playing the games he was playing in most of them. I am sure he's a nice and great guy, just not who I would prefer to speak about video games if he has such little apparent interest or care. Hum drum. Bland. The charisma and personality of a plastic sack. He doesn't come off as even curious in many cases, just ready for the video to end.

The difference is, there isn't a new sport with different rules every week.

also, Brad, for your nerve issues in your wrist, possibly do some stretching like physiotherapy type stuff for your wrist and elbow, I experienced a lot of problems after pushing myself too hard at guitar, and doing various stretches got rid of all those problems.

This is a recurring theme among the GB crew. I love the site though!

In all fairness to Brad he mentions his nerve damage in is wrist. If that is the case I could see it being painful over time. It was smart for Nintendo to include the stand for the cases. For me though, I have no issues paying it for 1hr plus without the stand. I will say that the stand is great at work.

Lol, "Are you sure this is not on easy?", "No, I have it set on 2.5".

2.5 is incredibly easy. The intensity meter explains it quite clearly...

Haven't used the stand once and I've played it for a few hours straight in both singleplayer and multiplayer without any issues. Repositioning maybe, but never whole arm inducing cramps. So much to enjoy in KI: Uprising. Definitely can feel the love and care that went into making this game, just so much content.

Avatar image for liquidprince

This game has a ton of options for controls. Like literally anything that you wanna tweak you can from reticule speed and drift to complete button remappings. You can even have it so that it auto fires when the reticule goes over enemies which goes a long way into ceasing fatigues... It only bothers your arms when you need to hold the 3DS with one hand and hit the L button to fire with the same hand. So the auto fire alleviates that.

This control scheme has been around for the last DS though, especially with first person shooters. Why's it such a problem now? The 3DS isn't so much heavier than the DS that it causes a bigger problem, right?

The aiming works differently than in the DS FPS. The DS FPS games worked like a keyboard and mouse, but this is more like a trackwheel. To turn here, you have to slide the lower screen and then tap it again to stop.

Still, this isn't a new idea and games from the previous DS generation still used a one-hand-buttons, one-stylus control scheme often, and got not just played a lot, but that was a great new way to play games that people really loved. It's weird that this game is suddenly the big one for talking about how bad it is, but that's not helped by Nintendo and their putting out a stand because my poor, girlish wrist can't support a thing that weighs less than a pound.

Avatar image for herbiebug

I don't understand how a control scheme so awkward a peripheral needs to be packaged in with the game to support it doesn't get scrapped in the first week of development.

I understand. I know sometimes the internets can sound like whiners or complainers, but its a lot of those people who may be described as such that support these sites. So some criticism should not be ignored. After all people, not considered "real gamers" don't really frequent these sites or even know what a Giant bomb is. The "internets" are the ones tuning in.

No matter how much the content creators may rally against the whiners and complainers, that very same bunch are the repeat traffic consistently coming back to the site.

I know these are "quick" looks, but sometimes it seems like you guys don't know the basics of games. It's understandable that you are viewing a game for the first time, but it would improve these quick looks if some time was invested into understanding the game before filming.

When I hear some of your reactions to something in a game, it kinda gives it a negative slant. Nine times out of ten, the mechanic you didn't understand can be made clear once you read or learn about the game before recording a quick look. For example getting hit by enemy attacks in the game, if you dash right before it hits you, you become invincible and can move through an attack. Or the door with the number 4 on it is only accessible once you increase the difficulty to the corresponding number on the door.

For all the things that change, there are so many that don't. Whiskeymedia, gamespot, it doesn't really matter apparently. Shit's still giantbomb and the quicklooks still incite the rage of the internet!

@newfire:

Yeah, that's how you controlled shooters on the DS, you didn't need a stand...however it was a bitch playing any of them (especially Metroid Prime) for more than 30 minutes at a time, besides the fact that there weren't really any good shooters for the DS anyway. The DS was an innovative piece of hardware, so it makes sense that trying to shoehorn probably the most overused game formula onto it didn't really turn out the best results.

Also, I could be wrong, but I believe there are metroids as enemies in this game because they appeared on the original Kid Icarus for NES, I think even before the original Metroid. Either way, I know they were in there.

And the guy talking about using your thumb instead of a stylus was right. For the original DS at least, there was some sort of lanyard that attached to the DS that had a weird small piece of plastic for use with your thumb that could take the place of the stylus and apparently not fuck up your touch screen. I almost got one of these but it was an official Nintendo product (expensive) so I don't know if it was useful or not.

But I'm not defending the game. Looks like it has cool features but also looks incredibly tedious. I may end up getting a 3DS but I'm not interested in this.

EDIT: This whole post isn't directed at you, newfire, just the first paragraph, ha. The rest of it was in response to the video, in case 300 other users here haven't already pointed out why there are metroids in this game.

This actually looks okay. I'm kind of tempted to try it, although the fact that you need to play it on a stand to mitigate wrist cramps is kind of absurd. At that point they should've just made it a Wii game

Just like my mother, the internet will always find fault with everything regardless. That's the way it is, and I'm gradually learning to accept it. I tend to stop reading the comments beneath QLs if I see they're just becoming pointless rants about staff. I'm here for the good stuff, not to see strangers throw tantrums.

It's great that people offer the GB guys feedback, I've no doubt they take a lot of it on board and as subscribers it's nice to have our voices heard. But if it gets to the point where you repeatedly find yourself quivering with silent rage then maybe you should just breathe, take a step away from the monitor and find another site more suited to your tastes. If you think you can do a better job than the GB staff then send them your CV, or start your own site.

Anyways, this game looks like a big old mess. I was intrigued as to what they would do with the Kid Icarus IP, but this just seems a bit disappointing.

Looking at this now, I feel like a lock on mechanic would've improved this experience - and saved your hands - significantly.

In my opinion, any game that hurts to play is a failure. So, regardless of how well produced Icarus is, how long-awaited it's been, and how content packed it is, I will never buy this game. Especially since it's a Nintendo game; they've ALWAYS put playability above all.

Exactly. The only bad thing with this setup is having to hold the 3DS with one hand for extended periods of time. Hence, the stand.

I would much rather hold it comfortably and it actually be a portable game. I actually use my portable system outside of my house, something that seems increasingly rare. I think the stand is a shitty compromise and is further proof of the dying dedicated portable market.
