I've been building my PCs for nearly 20 years and only the last one in January went 100% smoothly. I blame fingers that look like a lb of butcher's sausages...

If you follow LogicalIncrements.com and Reddit.com/r/BuildAPC, you can't go wrong. Pick a pricepoint and you're ready to build.

I bought the same Antec 300 case years ago. I actually got the one with the blue LED fans which did come with all 4 fans and it was on sale so that was a pretty good buy.

Thank you (re: Logical Increments)! Someone I follow on Twitter recommended that site several months ago -- I remembered the quality/color gradation layout -- but I had forgotten the name of it. Even worse, I had forgotten just who had recommended it, so I couldn't ask.

aw, you should have just bought an aftermarket cooler for the cpu.

I never saw the specs for the build, but judging from the size of the cpu, it looked like a socket 2011 cpu.

It would perhaps be a tad overkill for games, but socket 2011 is way cooler than socket 1150.

it's a shame to just throw it away because you didn't have a cooler.

I'm glad that GBEAST has a working rig now though.

http://pcpartpicker.com/ is great. It takes you through the components you'll need step by step, warns you if they're incompatible or if things won't fit in the case and shows you prices from several different stores so you can get everything cheap.

For my last PC I looked around the buildapc subreddit, found a list of parts that was close to my price range and modified it on pcpartpicker so I could get exactly what I wanted.

Also, on the topic of cases I'd recommend the Corsair Obsidian Series 450D. It can be a little pricey but it has a ton of quiet fans and filters in front of all of them to keep dust out.

First build is always the most stressful. I know I was sweating bullets on mine. Seating the CPU was probably the worst, even more so than cable management. The noise the motherboard pins made when pushing down the swing arms... Christ.

It gets easier as you go, though. Just take your time, do your research, don't be afraid to ask questions no matter how dumb they might seem, and please, read the fucking manual.

Once you pick a part (let's say, the CPU) you can continue to search for parts but only ones that are compatible with the ones you've chosen will show up. No more trying to keep track of what works with what.

Also: That case! Getting a good case is usually a difference of $20 or $40 and can make your life so much easier! If this is just going to sit under a desk, I'd say get a bigger case than you need. That way working on it is so much easier, you don't have to pull a video card to get to the hard drives. Most decent cases now come with tool-less hard drive caddies and way more options for routing cables behind the motherboard. Oh, and a case with dust filters on it so you don't have to open the thing up and blow it out every few months. Worth every penny.

@vinny Tired of your hard drives dying all the time?

Don't buy "green" drives, and disable the disk sleep options in Windows' Power Saving settings.

The difference in power consumption is negligible for a desktop PC and the difference to drive longevity can be considerable.

Personally I've had the most luck with Hitachi's drives lately if you're looking for cheap high capacity disks, and Western Digital's Se drives if you can afford to spend a bit more.

HDsentinel is a tool that I'd recommend you use to monitor your drive health. It runs in the tray and will warn you if the health is starting to deteriorate - at which point you should buy a replacement, move your data to the new disk, and RMA/scrap the drive - or use it for data you can afford to lose.

Terrible idea for a work system. Fine for an enthusiast that can deal with the downtime, but not for work.

Vinny, you and Alex are great. In the future I think there are a few good/popular (gaming even) cases that have handles. I suspect that might mean something for you constantly moving stuff around your work area..
