Wait, they are doing a Nintendo Sports Impressions video and they don't have Wii Sports Expert Jeff Bakalar on here?!?!

Joking aside, this is a pleasant surprise and looking forward to watching this.

I understand that Mii's aren't as prominent of a feature on the Switch as on the Wii and Wii U and that Nintendo probably want people to be able to jump in to the game quickly without making a character, but I was very relieved to learn that Mii's can still be used. Especially because the characters they've made specifically for this game are absolutely hideous. Which is honestly surprising to me, because Nintendo are usually very good at character design. These are the blandest, most charmless, corporate-looking characters I can recall ever seeing in a Nintendo game.

Apart from that I suppose the game looks fine. Maybe on par with the original Wii Sports, but a long way to go to Sports Resort, which was really, really excellent.

Maybe i'm in a grumpy mood, but this looks like a weak package to me. Multiple games where being in control of your movement and anticipating the next shot is very important, but Nintendo decides that you don't get to move at all and have to make do with their AI? A penalty-kick minigame that boils down to you making a kicking motion with the right timing? The chaotic rocket league attempt also seems to forget realize that Rocket League only works because you're in a speedy car and can gather boosts so you can have a real impact on the game both defensively and offensively. That footage of Jan sitting there with 0 stamina in his own half aimlessly having to kick the ball forwards in the hope that the AI is good enough to get something out of it looks very unfun to me. And naturally bowling is bowling, but doesn't the switch already have this game? It even has a similar lay-out.

But even beyond the quality of the games, the production seems a bit dissapointing to me. The characters are very simplistic palette swaps of eachother and hardly emote. The music doesn't really pop out neither like you want from a sunny feel good arcade title. I will say the chimes and sound effects are adequately arcadey and it's nice that Nintendo enabled online play for this thing. But knowing that some people will buy this thing in stores for 50$ makes me grimace a bit. This is not a world apart from 2006's Wii Sports. Which means that there will be a game or 2 that will still have weeks or months of staying power for some, but i just feel like they could have done more here.

@onemanarmyy: @craigmona:

I think y'all have fair criticisms. Man, Wii Sports Resort is so good. I played so much of the Air Sports exploration mode.

On this game appearing thin, I somewhat agree with that. Especially when compared to all the games stuffed in Wii Sports Resort. Hearing that Golf is only coming in a update in the fall of this year lends to how weak Switch Sports is as a package.

... But then I took a gander on how much the game is on the web store of the Nintendo eShop and apparently the game is only US$39.99. Retail is $49.99 because of the included leg strap accessory.

Guess it a bit get what you pay for? Maybe there's a motion control bowling game on Switch, but I haven't heard of it.

I don't mind not being able to control movement. It's abstracted out. In Tennis, I wonder how much control the player has over spin.

Having practiced badminton for 9 years as a kid, I can tell you that badminton is emphatically not fancy tennis, rather tennis is fancy badminton. Tennis courts are much larger than badminton ones and are more often outdoors, the rackets are way more expensive and there is way more money involved in competitions. Tennis clubs and practice is generally way more expensive as well. I myself have described badminton as "poor person's tennis" in the past, and not unjustifiably as I doubt I would have been able to practice tennis for 9 years.

Edit: I guess squash would be fancy tennis.

@nuttism: Here in the netherlands, playing badminton is like the essential 'sport you play on vacation and at campings'. I remember spending a good 1-2 hours a day after dinner playing badminton with my father whenever we were on holiday and the schedule was empty for the day. Funnily enough my polish neighbors had friends over for a week and they too busted out the badminton rackets for their vacation :D

@onemanarmyy: I'm from Iceland, and the wind here is too powerful to play badminton outdoors most of the time. The fly would just fly away. We did have a badminton court in the garden for a while though, but the rackets and net were really bad and there weren't any lines so I preferred playing indoors. Badminton being a "family sport" makes it even less fancy to me. I was never particularly good at it, but it I found it more fun than something like table tennis, even though I was a more successful table tennis player. My family actually rents a weekly table tennis court for an hour where we can play together. It's pretty fun.

@onemanarmyy: I like table tennis and it has excellent trolling potential if you play defensively with tackles like I did, but there isn't as much exercise as badminton and it really depends on your mentality how well you can play. It is also way more stressful (at least for me) and players tend to scream more (which is doubly annoying since you are really close to each other). I have also found that my movements from badminton are much better retained. I'm still pretty decent at badminton now, but my table tennis play isn't much better than a beginner now that years have passed even though I was pretty decent at it at the time (probably because stamina matters less than in badminton).

That tennis game is straight up just Wii Tennis, right down to how you control both characters at once in a doubles match.

Looks fun but also like a big step back from Wii Sports Resort. It feels like they are holding stuff back for DLC (or a sequel). And it doesn’t even appear to be set on Wuhu Island?? What??

The video itself was quite entertaining but I have mixed feelings about the game.
