According to a few people on twitter seemingly confirming with Sony reps, this thing will not have an Ultra HD Bluray drive in it

Did it actually say "Press Esc to Exit Full Screen" at ~28:00?

I discovered that the 4K TV I bought last year doesn't support HDR. So, looks like I'm saving up for another one.

Could you enlighten me what was so earth-shatteringly terrible about this reveal and the things they showed?

Okay, someone explain this to me, because I feel like an idiot: hasn't HDR been a thing? Like, since 2006? Oblivion definitely had HDR as an option. You could choose between that and Bloom, and there were hacks to get both by setting things in your video card. Was that different? Is this one of those things about people hyping features in TVs that have been available in monitors for like a decade?

I'm not getting a new tv until probably around PS5 time, at which I will just buy a PS5.

and I am getting a sega 32x feel from this. Kind of better, but not better enough to justify buying this console all over again for.

TVs will always provide limitations on consoles but I'll always go with framerate over resolution/bells-and-whistles. Playing games at 144fps on medium PC settings will always look better to me than 30fps on ultra settings. Graphics always lose their novelty -- and often fast -- but a smooth framerate never gets old. In some magical world where we could have unlimited fps on consoles, I'd be very excited for PS4 Pro. But if the benefits are only 4k and HDR, it's hard to care. Seeing Bloodborne running at 60fps may change my mind though.

@beforet:The fact that you need a supported display makes me think this is more of a hardware thing.

Like, a game with HDR can only be so bright and so dark because its range is restricted by your display. But if the display itself has HDR support then it can be much more dramatic.

This seems more like a feature to sell TVs than anything else. Not unlike 3D.

I'll wait and see how this whole thing develops overtime. Though, I'll probably stick to my original PS4 and just play a lot of the Windows 10 ports of Xbox One/Scorpio games when they start to become available.

People expecting this thing to run games at 4k are going to be very disappointed.

@beforet: HDR is like Anti-Aliasing. In the sense that the concept has been around for a while now, but people are always improving on the technology behind.

Couldn't agree more. 1080p at 144fps > 4k at 60fps.

Vinny getting in the live shot is one of my favorite GB moments ever. So dumb. So hilarious. My stomach hurt after from laughing.

Some baffling decisions all round IMO in this stream. A sizzle reel of footage they've already shown, a fairly dull Mass Effect demo, no 4K BD support, and 4K/HDR was never going to show on a stream. A really weird reveal overall.

Someone on the GB side probably knocked the mouse on whatever PC they have showing the feed.

I was expecting it all day and was surprised I didn't see it on the upcoming section.

Kinda bummed that this wasn't up when I got home and ended up seeing all the updates popping up elsewhere.

The additions that PS4 Pro makes aren't worth the price tag. It's an incredibly underwhelming product made to look a lot better than it really is

i would love for ps4 backward compatibility to become as robust as xbones seems to be becoming, that way i could get a ps4 on the cheap so i dont have to borrow my roomies and also have one place to play all the hot playstation scloosies (and also get back into ni no kuni :( )

I don't think that's likely to happen. While I'm not an expert on console architecture, the difference between the One and the 360 is much lesser than between the PS4 and the PS3. That Cell Processor makes it difficult to emulate on an x86 architecture, I bet.

I'm in the middle of designing a logo, and when Danny said "Phil Fish", I was literally hitting enter into google search for the Polytron Logo... the world is fucking weird.

Not a fan of the overwhelming snark for most of the event. Only the Vinny/Alex stuff made things better for the last 20 minutes or so.

The Vinny at the end bit reminded me of the good old GameSpot live videos from 10 years ago.

@doncabesa: going from 1.8 TF to nearly 5 in a closed console system is not marginal. This could easily be its own console, were this another time.

I know, but before the whole prediabetes thing, Dan said he was drinking like eight or ten sodas a day! Which I think is suicide for anyone. So seeing him drink a soda on camera multiple times in a row makes me wonder if he's fallen back into that habit...

4K consoles are here and GB will upgrade its player beyond 720p... possibly, some day?

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised at all that Vinny getting into the shot of the Sony stream was the most exciting thing about all this.

@lonelyspacepanda: Sony have said that multiplayer won't be allowed to run at a different frame rate on the pro vs ps4 so bloodbourne might not be updated to run at 60fps since the multiplayer aspect of it is always on. Same with dark souls 3 probably.

Yeah, with even decent graphics settings at 4K, we can probably expect most games to average the typical "solid" 20-30 fps again (if they even render at actual 4K in the first place). Should have stuck to 1080p with significantly upgraded graphics and framerate. Are people even going to notice the difference between 1080 and 4K on a 30 to 40 inch TV, sitting 10 feet away?

Looks like Sony didn't want to isolate the install-base by putting a significantly more powerful machine on the market, but instead they're releasing a product that's kind of redundant, even for someone who doesn't have a PS4 yet.

I just realized that they announced a hardware upgrade without telling the audience what the actual upgrade is. That makes me think that they're really afraid that people will compare the numbers with the Scorpio or downplay the difference it will make.

At this stage, there are still people that anticipate new games to run at 1440P 60FPS upscaled or even native 4k. Releasing the specs would give a better picture of what people can expect.
