Overview
Whomps are a large stone enemy that first appeared in the game
Super Mario 64 during the level
Whomp's Fortress. They are disciples and minions of
Bowser as well as the Whomp King. Whomps can be defeated by luring them to fall over and then proceeding to ground pound onto their backs. The creation of the enemy was largely inspired by the Japanese folklore spirit Nurikabe. The Nurikabe is a sentient imposing wall that blocks travelers from advancing on their journey. Since Super Mario 64, the Whomp character has appeared in many other Mario titles, including most recently in
Super Mario Galaxy 2.
