That's cool. I really liked Dragon Quest VIII, but I dunno about the other ones.

GBC version, dawg. You can get it on eBay for a reasonable price (especially if you're content with just the cartridge.)

Anyway, the chances of this getting released in the west are as low as these 3 games getting released on Virtual Console while Yuji Horii is still alive.

That's great!  IX was the first Dragon Quest game I played, but after that I went back to get IV, V and VI on the DS and I just really love the charm and simplicity of the series.  I'm currently playing through VIII on the PS2.  It's a bit disappointing these are coming to the Wii rather than a handheld, but oh well.

Hopefully we see VII soon as well.

Maybe this is my chance, I've always paid somewhat attention to the series,
but I've not played any of them yet since I'm not a huge RPG player.

Yep.  Nintendo got away with it for Super Mario AllStars, so Square is going to try to get away with it now, which they probably will.

While it's true chances are slim, don't forget that Dragon Quest X is a huge game for SE and they may decide to release these here to spike interest for that game. That game could find it's way on Project Cafe...

I don't see why they wouldn't release it in English, IX was stupidly popular in Europe and we never had the original NES versions.  (does that stop them from coming to virtual console?).  Doing a big retail release of the classic games is going to sell a lot better than digital ones.

Yes we did! They were just called Dragon Warrior.

Edit: Whoops. You meant they didn't come out in Europe, right?

Check the edit the OP - it would seem they're not coming...It would be pointless.

Yeah, VIII was the first one released in Europe and didn't have the number, it was just Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King.  At least they didn't re-number them.

Dragon Warrior was the first game I ever remember playing. I remember it so well because I didn't know how to read - I'd walk out of the town and see how far I could get without running into an enemy. If I did I was basically dead because I'm pretty sure I must have just used defend the whole time, or kept attacking and winning but not healing. Damn slimes. Good times as a 3 year old.

I might have gotten this if it was a 3D remake but come on. These are just roms.

What stops them from coming to the Virtual Console is Yuji Horii -- the mastermind behind the series. He doesn't want his games re-released unless he's had the chance to add something to them (which made this announcement a bit of a surprise for me -- I wonder what kind of bonuses it'll ship with), and because he's one of the oldest guys in the industry (both in actual age and years of experience), as well as Square Enix's big money maker, they've respected his wishes so far. Don't you find it strange how you can get almost every FF game on VC and PSN yet DQ games are nowhere to be found? Well, there ya go.

What stops them from getting released in English is -- well first of all -- that they seem to be emulated. It's not unheard of for ROMs to be (re)translated and edited, but it's unlikely. Another reason is that I just can't see this selling all that well in English-speaking territories. There's no way this would sell as well as the DS games, and their sales numbers aren't anything to write home about either.

I wish I was more interested in the series, it seems like a great package for fans.

The only Dragon Quest game I actually really have enjoyed is Dragon Quest IX.
