You are all my children now!
Developed by Rare and published by the infamous LJN in 1989, this platforming game is a complete nightmare for many reasons. At least I consider it's possibly one of those uncommon games that's so bad it's good...or so bad it's actually horrendous it makes you feel ripped off. It does have four-player co-op, which sounds fun, but is terribly executed. The soundtrack by David Wise is actually decent. It does its best with capturing the horror setting. The controls feel similar to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in that they are abysmal. They come off as either stiff or basically a delayed transition. Random objects will fall on you, such as rocks, and if you get hit, you lose a life. There's also no visible health bar. If you get hit four times, you lose a life. The game has extremely confusing level designs: for example, the levels where you're supposed to go through a door is designed to confuse you as it may look like it's closed, but really, that's where they trick you. Speaking of the doors, the doors will appear to be open or closed at random, making the game feel more tedious and often a chore at best. Once you enter the mansion, you are tasked with finding enough bones to continue the level; however, this is where the levels become your worst enemy. You will notice a ton of enemies further down. Speaking of which, these are generic and dull enemies, so be prepared to see the same few enemies in levels. And speaking of bones, some of them are difficult to find because they easily blend in with a level's backdrop. Your default weapon, your fists, seem to be inconsistent with hitting enemies. Due to the game's maligned hitboxes, it either connects with the enemy, or results in you getting hit. Overall, this game rarely even gives you any clues on what to do, so instead, you end up running in circles because of how bland and monotonous this game is. Even Mister AVGN commented how tedious this game is, and that's really saying a whole lot. Interestingly, it was revealed by someone, I don't know his name, that in an earlier build of the game, players could play as Freddy Krueger. So is this really something so bad it's actually good? Well, of course it is! What are you expecting, Freddy versus Jason in The Room?
