Alan Wake 2 Isn't Alan Wake 2, But Some Other Nebulous Entity

It's not a sequel, and it's not DLC, but it's something. It's definitely something.

Yesterday, a number of sites (including us) reported on a resume listing that seemingly heralded the existence of Alan Wake 2, an as-of-then unannounced sequel to last year's psychological action horror game from Remedy Entertainment. This morning, Remedy responded to several of those reports (not ours...*sniff*...) with a confirmation of the game's existence... of sorts.

So reads Remedy's Statement:

Fans of the franchise will be excited to learn that yes, more Wake is coming! But to be absolutely certain to avoid confusion, this next Wake installment will not be Alan Wake 2. But neither will it be DLC. The rest we're saving for our official announcement when we'll actually SHOW YOU.

We are really excited about this project which a slice of our team has been working on for the last months. It's something that'll definitely give more to the Wake fans out there, but just as importantly, this installment will also give an opportunity for players who aren't familiar with the franchise to finally jump on board.

Yes, confusion has most certainly been avoided here.

Don't ask us, Alan. We're just as confused as you are.
Don't ask us, Alan. We're just as confused as you are.

So, to recap: It is not an Alan Wake sequel, nor is it a DLC offering for the first game. Rather, it is something new for fans of the property, but also something that new players can "jump on board" with. Is it a prequel? A Dark Athena-esque updated repackaging of the first game? The Alan Wake/Max Payne crossover we've always dreamed about? Does it have four legs, yet only one foot? If I figure this out, will The Riddler spare Commissioner Gordon's life?

Cryptic language aside, Remedy seems supremely excited about what they're working on, and promises we won't have to wait too terribly long to find out more.

We can't wait to show you more, bear with us. Release dates, platforms and pricing are unconfirmed as of yet, but Fall 2011 is probably a good guess. More coming soon!

I hereby decree a bounty upon this puzzlement! I want someone to slice this Gordian knot before Remedy makes its (seemingly) inevitable E3 announcement. First person in the comments of this story to guess correctly gets some profile points, a Whiskey t-shirt of their choosing (based on whatever we have lying around), and I promise to finally talk to someone about getting rid of that damnedable "first comment" quest.

So it's 1.5

Like Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood wasn't really Assassin's Creed 3 but it wasn't a DLC either but rather 2.5?

I say it's a re-release for PC and PS3. Adds all DLC plus some extra content.

But see then we miss out on such conversation altering statements like these!

Alan Wake didn't quite grab me, but I really liked the look of the game. I wouldn't mind seeing something like that maybe pop up on PC....

Further falling down its rabbit-hole of meta-literary gameplay, this new game will have its setting be NIGHT SPRINGS, the Twilight Zone knock off tv show in the original game.
Calling it.

It's the Alan Wake board game.
"I wanna be the flare gun!"
"You're always the flare gun!"

Edit: I too was going to say a Night Springs game, but ThatFrood beat me to it. That or a switch in character focus to Thomas Zane or Alan Wake's publicist guy.

How about a completely new game using the style and main character of Alan Wake? You know, as if Alan is just floating around as a protagonist in all his stories?

Or, you know, it could be an Alex Casey game, based on the stories that Alan writes in Alan Wake. That would be cool.

Does that mean that it won't be xbox exclusive this time around? Assuming Sony survives the PSN disaster that would be nice.

When there's only one game in the franchise, this kind of statement doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

You beat me to it... that was going to be my first guess/joke... That or a top-down car combat game a la Red Faction, despite it making no sense at all for the franchise at all... Maybe an iPhone game? I guess we'll see...

I say they are gonna go the episodic path similar to the half-life games. If it's not a sequel or DLC then an XBLA release dosnt seem unlikely. Also the first Alan Wake and the dlc that followed it were set up like a tv show where each chapter ended with a cliffhanger and the credits rolled. then the next chapter would start with "previously on Alan wake". That styal of storytelling is perfect for episodic games. Also the fact that they said it will probably be out by this fall suggests that it won't be a full game considering that it took them like 5 years to make the first one. I can't see them making a full game the very next year.

I'm 99 percent certain there will be one the original game didn't sell well lets just hope this version
comes to PC and isn't as repetitive with the combat or the locations. If it was up to me I go back to there original Idea and go sandbox it doesn't need to be like gta but it does need more freedom.

I can see it being a game centered around Thomas Zane, being essentially a "prequel" to the events of Alan Wake.

It would set up the origins of the Dark, as well as showing the town of Bright Falls during "happier" times, revisiting characters from Alan Wake when they weren't quite so messed up.

I think it will be a game featuring Alan Wake but with a completely different story. Effectively Alan Wake 2, but it will just have another name like "Alan Wake: Second Edition". Those cheeky PR execs with their clever wording!

It's not a sequel and it's not DLC (thank science for that because in my book, a xbla/psn title is DLC as well). Perhaps a PC/PS3 port or some sort of prequel with Thomas Zane as the lead character?

What I absolutely hope it's not is something that involves Kinect as a requirement to play the game... That's a dealbreaker for me.

It's probably going to be an online web series recapping the events and/or story. Mostly clued in by the "people who haven't played the games can hop on board" style comment. Sounds like they want to make a movie or web series out of it.

So, more horror? Sounds good to me, and I'm glad it's not a direct sequel to AW2.
