Angry Birds Arrives On The PlayStation Network

After tens of millions of downloads over the App Store and Android, Angry Birds is now a PlayStation Mini.

The first console-specific downloadable platform to be graced by Rovio Mobile's popular physics-based puzzler Angry Birds is… PlayStation Minis? Weird.

In this week's PS Blog "The Drop" column for Jan. 3, Angry Birds was surprisingly announced for an imminent release on PS3 and PSP Minis. It hit yesterday afternoon for $3.99--about three bucks more than the iOS version, and $3.99 more than it is on Android (where Angry Birds is free, but ad-supported). This particular version of the game is essentially the same one you played before the most recent "Mighty Eagle" update, which added several new levels and the paid DLC bird. Overall, you're getting around 200 levels with this Minis version, which seems fair.

I should note here that playing Angry Birds on your PS3 will probably only want to make you switch back to the iOS versions, which look much, much cleaner and run a tad smoother as well. Despite the more powerful hardware of the PS3 (my PSP is... somewhere), I've experienced general sluggishness with the UI and the delivery of birds. Plus, it's just odd to crank back a cardinal and let it rip with an analog stick, if you're used to the original touch interface.

Angry Birds is still slated for an Xbox Live and Wii release, though it's unknown when either version will hit, or what they'll actually have in terms of content.

Don't buy it! Not optimized for the PS3 at all. Terrible controls, same exact graphics as the phone versions. Looks ugly on the big-screen.

I haven't yet seen a PSP mini that supported DLC, so I'm guessing this is about  as much as this edition is going to get. (Same sort of thing with the DSiWare version of Surviving High School; the iPhone/iPod Touch version has lots of stories, but the DSiWare version only has eight.) Doesn't bother me either way. I think the game's quite fun.

I like Angry Birds, I am not a huge fanatic for it, but I play it on the ipad or iphone every once in a while, it can kill a few minutes while waiting or something.

That said, porting this to a non-touch device is just kind of dumb.  One of the reasons Angry Birds worked so well on the iOS is that it's MADE for touch input.  This is just as bad as people trying to port games to the iOS that require a virtual controller on screen, just the other way around.

Touch games and control games do not mix, please stop trying to port them to each other.

Same.  I have it on iPhone and it's a lesser Castle Crashers, IMHO.

Not really interested in a non-touched controlled version, also I have Boom Blox 1 & 2 if I want to play these kinds of games.

And the most expensive Angry Birds release of the Week Award goes to the Mac App Store, where it's five dollars for some reason.

Thank you, overpriced App Store launch.

I have it. Looks and sounds really terrible on the PS3. Thought it would have recieved a HD facelift.
