Apple Founder Steve Jobs Passes Away at 56

After a long battle with pancreatic cancer, the technological visionary is no longer with us.

No Caption Provided

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has lost his seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer, it was announced today.

The technological visionary has dealt with health issues for close to a decade, going on a medical leave of absence this past January.

He continued to be a public figure for Apple until announcing his retirement in August.

"Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve," said a statement from by Apple's board of directors. "His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Apple's impact on the video games industry, especially in recent years, has been undeniable. The iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch are some of the most popular portable gaming devices available.

The company announced the latest iteration of the iPhone yesterday, the iPhone 4S. It goes on sale later this month.

Apple is collecting thoughts and memories of Jobs through the email address rememberingsteve@apple.com.

Thanks for everything, Steve.

It really makes me cringe when I see people quote that, it's one of the most barbaric and insensitive quotes of all fucking time.

Barbaric and insensitive? It's the unbridled truth.

People always say "It's the 21st century, where's my rocket ship?" You know what, it's right there in your pocket, that thing you now just take for granted every day. Ten years ago, if I had described to you an iPhone it would have BLOWN YOUR FUCKING MIND, you would have refused to believe such a device would exist so soon in the future. But it does, as does the rest of the smartphone market, because Jobs willed it into existence. And changed the way we work, play, communicate, learn, basically do everything. Anyone claiming he was just a savvy marketer and not a tech visionary doesn't have a fucking clue what they're talking about.

Thanks for everything Steve Jobs! I'm buying an iPhone this weekend because ever since I left for android my life has been troublesome, phone-wise. I can't wait to get back to your sleek, and fast awesomeness, which I have grown to love.

Rest in peace, Steve Jobs.

It's tempting to berate Apple for making electronics a fashion statement, but you know what? If it wasn't for Steve Jobs, there's a very good chance that computers would still just be behemoths sitting in university labs and the Pentagon. They'd be much faster, of course, but would anyone have been there to convince us even the layperson could benefit from a personal computer? Would the World Wide Web have been developed? Would we be gabbing on this website's comments section?

I don't know, but I doubt it.

@Hero_Swe:

Uhh, while yes you won't remember the names of so many victims, I am not going to say one persons death is more tragic than something like the freaking holocaust.

But sure, the media can really pull on heart strings when they are only reporting on the death of a single person.

Obama just released this statement:

Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

The last bit of how most of us learned the news on a device he invented really struck me as I did in fact learn of the news on my iPad.

Of course I know they were all human beings that were loved by others and were important in their own ways. I just hate assholes like him that try to to impress in a situation where people should either give their condolences, contribute something noteworthy, or just shut the fuck up.

It's in really poor taste.
