Assassin's Creed 2 Teaser Site Teases Italian Renaissance

First concrete stuff on Ubi's upcoming sequel has Da Vinci written all over it.

This Leonardo can actually defend himself.
Ubisoft has launched a teaser site for Assassin's Creed 2. While there isn't much to see just yet beyond a quick Flash animation and an invitation to check out the next issue of Game Informer, that animation says quite a lot about the game's setting.

While we had previously heard back in November that the game would be set in the French Revolution, that bit of info appears to be completely incorrect. The teaser site has a distinctive Italian Renaissance look to it. So will we be running around in someone else's ancestral memories, stabbing famous old dudes like Leonardo Da Vinci? Signs point to "answer unclear, ask again later." At the moment, it seems like only Game Informer knows for sure.

Another section of the site has you print out a logo and hold it up to a webcam to unlock more details. I went through all that, but didn't actually see anything new. Hmm.

I'm quite interested to see how they are going to do this one, and I still hope we get to jack fools in the back with our retractable daggers :D

Sure, Italy sounds just as good a place as France.

I'm excited, loved the first game.  Also if you could be the Ninja Turtles in this game then it would be the best game ever.

Xav de Matos, over at Joystiq figured out the Webcam thing.

It reveals a 3D model of the hidden blade weapon, but he totally called out the marketing team on the hand having 5 fingers, and not 4 like the the game's folklore said the Assassin's had.

Edited by Al3xand3r

Maybe they dropped the finger mutilating in later years of the brotherhood? Or this guy went rogue. He's not Highlander right?

I think it would be cool to have the game in Venice like some rumors were saying.  It is seeming more and more true with the teaser.

I can't wait!  ^__^

Posted by Dethfish

I can't wait to hear more about Assassin's Creed 2. I just recently got done with the first one and loved it.

Posted by Vorbis

Hm and they have mentioned the use of swimming in AC2. Stabbing people in Venice? sold.

In the words of Ric Flair WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Looks like you have to castrate Vitruvian Man, hardcore. Seriously though, I think the Ninja Turtles setting sounds promising.

Edit: I finally did the webcam thing... kinda,,, & it takes some doing but is admittedly the least bit awesome, I waved my webcam at the pdf on my (TFT LCD) screen, balancing it on a can lying around (to make it a little less shaky than my hands) & point it directly at the shape, I could only get it to work when it was so close up that I couldn't see the hand & pulling out messed it up, so the printed pic is prolly better. what happens is the 3d shape follows the shape in the camera like Anderson Coopers fail stunt during the elections last year (lulz)

I read it on Destructoid and they speculated about it being in Venice. Apart from the Renaissance being an interesting setting, I'm anxious to see what new mechanics they introduce with it (hiding in the water, perhaps?). Wherever they do set it, I'm sure it'll be cool; Can't wait.

Molto bella!

I am very excited about what they are going to do in this game.  The Italian setting would be an excellent place to have it since the buildings in that time would also be perfect to free run around so I am hopeful in the way it's going.

That's the time period I was hoping that they would do.

Loved the first game and Italy is a great setting. The Italian Renaissance...I like it.

Posted by Death_Burnout

Well...i enjoyed Pachter making that long shot, bit too far of a shot then?

Posted by cjmhockey

Awesome... thought the first was great, can't wait to see what they do for this one.

Wow that logo thing is insane. I'm half tempted to think Joystiq made that up- does a window jsut pop up on the site when you webcam-in the logo then?

They basically confirmed renaissance period in that trailer; and while Italy is looking likely, I kinda thing it would be cool if they drew parrallels between the Italian, English and French renaissance -- although the English renaissance does come later than the Italian renaissance.

hope they don't make it as repetitive and boring as the first one.

Edited by Mysterysheep

Hopefully it'll be a little more interesting this time around. The first game would've been so much better if each mission wasn't the exact same. There's only so many times you can sit on a bench patiently.

Update: Oh snap!! Looks like I wasn't quick enough ^^^^^^

RENAISSANCE FTW.

The Italian Renaissance...that is soooo good.....and not just because i am italian... :p

Edited by TwoOneFive

Hopefully the sequel won't just be a pretty game like the first. I tried so hard to like it more, but the gameplay was really weak, super easy, and extremely repetitive.

Will we see the Ninja Turtles, one can only hope.  So what does this mean, we play through the DNA memories of a soprano person whose ancestor was italian?  Wonder what all the stuff in the last game meant.

So...has anyone tried putting in the date of birth 04/15/1452?  I mean, given that Da Vinci's artwork is featured predominantly on that website...and you can hand-enter a DOB at the BEGINNING of the Animus (if you hit exit experience at the bottom afterwards, you won't be able to do it)...

...I don't know...with all the secrets and crazy shit the LAST game did...I'm curious to see if Da Vinci's DOB is an Easter Egg with more info lying in wait...

Come on, let's hope one city will be Venice - they got to do that!!

Posted by Doogie2K

Well, they had Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus within a five-minute horse ride of each other in the first game, so maybe Revolutionary France and Renaissance Italy are just at opposite ends of the overworld.

Paris, Venice, and Geneva sounds like a nice vacation. ;)

If you wait long enough on the end of the video, you'll see a message, that's backwards.  I rotated it in paint, and it says: Game Informer 4/16/09.  So expect the 4/16/09 issue of Game Informer to be on Assassins' Creed.

So happy right now, I adored the original and delighted to see it finally confirmed after those rumours it had been canned.

Altair is back baby! :D

From, a very happy gamer!

I mashed the numpad without thinking on the age verification screen and now it won't let me access the site because I'm from 2352.

I'd like to see modern-day Assassin's Creed. Then again, after forcing myself through the first game I'd rather not play any Assassin's Creed unless they make it fun to play outside of the missions. More pickpocketing? No, thank you.

I saw this earlier, through an ad for the teaser. I know at least one person who will be really excited about this.

Assassin't Creed 2: The DaVinci Code
Can't wait really, the first one was one of my favorites after all.

Posted by ImperiousRix

Sadly, I didn't think Assassin's Creed was that great of a game.
Not looking forward to this one.

Assassin's Creed 1 was Angels & Demons

The Italian Renassiance sounds more appealing to me than the French Revolution. Don't know why, but that's just me. Anyways I'm excited, I'm hoping they make some revamps on the old game however. There were some that needed some serious tweaking. And less repetition.

Posted by ZmillA

With all the feedback they got about the repetitive missions. If this game isn't amazing, the development team has failed. They can't just make "the sequel" game. This has to be an amazing stand alone game.

Posted by MeatSim

I'm down for more Assassins Creed I don't care wear it takes place.

Posted by Poki3

I used WebcamMax to make part of my screen into a fake webcam. The arm is coo., but yeah, it has 5 fingers... weird...

Posted by addictedtopinescent

Awesome, I loved the first one this should be good

Posted by SketchyBrown

DId anybody besides me notice that they castrated the Vitruvian Man?

/crosses fingers for Venice
Edited by Linkyshinks

It could be quite cool if set in Italy during the Renaissance, but it depends on what city really. Florence would be a cool place for the game to be set,  given the nature of it's architecture.

Posted by dsplayer1010

I've got to try the camera thing

Posted by stephengotlost

After the into, there is a date listed as: 04.16.09

Posted by roofy

i have a feeling that they just want a tonne of pictures with people looking stupid holding up a symbol,

sounds like fun to me

Posted by Brackynews

One wrong leap in Venice could be messy.  Lots of bridges and boats to crash right through.
Jeff, there's a pullout menu when you click the left side logo.  Approve access to your webcam and scan the symbol into that window.

**SPOILERS**

Nice 3D model of the assassin blade gauntlet.  Fully rotates as you twist the paper around.

**BIGGER SPOILERS**

DUDE'S GOT FIVE FINGERS!! OMG!

**DER SPOILT**
