Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 PSN Requires An Internet Connection

Good thing you used one to download it, right?

Consider the following a PSA of sorts: The PSN version of Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 is using a form of DRM that requires an Internet connection when it boots. So, if your PS3 can’t talk to the cloud upon start-up, you won’t be able to play the game, despite the total absence of online functionality aside from basic leaderboards stuff (via TheSixthAxis).

Sound familiar? It should, for the Capcom devout out there. Final Fight: Double Impact had the exact same DRM, though the bugbear was that the publisher didn’t make it clear upfront that the game was protected. This time around, Capcom makes a note in the PSN Store description stating that you have to “log-in to the PSN each time to play the game.”

The Xbox Live Arcade version of Rearmed doesn’t have this kind of DRM, which probably says something about how many people are still sharing their PSN games through bogus profiles. I'll update if Capcom goes on record with a response as to why the game is protected as it is, or addresses some of the outcry from BC fans who aren't digging this form of rather... restrictive protection.

Clearly this will serve one purpose for them: accurate metrics of who bought the game legitimately.
Since we all know pirates still get to play the cracked game offline anyway.

Woah, what a coincidence!
I've had a constant connection to the internet since the 90s!

This sux, but this is really Sony's fault.  Honestly, Sony's DRM on the PSN games is so loose that I would not want to release a game on PSN.  They should really adopt something along the lines of Steam style or even Xbox style DRM.

Sorry.  I am expecting this to be unpopular.

Considering that you need an internet connection to buy the game, I'm going to chalk this up as a non-issue.

My PS3 is always connected anyway, and I don't share games.
So no biggie to me.

I was going to buy this game on the ps3, but luckily I searched some forums in fear of DRM first.
Now if Capcom by some miracle removed the DRM I'd buy it in a second, but judging by Final Fight: DI, that ain't going to happen sadly.

I use the multi-ps3 thing to share stuff with my family overseas. If Capcom has a problem with that then I have a problem with Capcom.

Of course, I haven't updated my PS3 past 3.15, so I guess this doesn't affect me. Its just irksome that game publishers are so willing to compromise their customer experience.
