Brace Yourself: Activision Will Announce the Next Call of Duty on May 1

Those watching the NBA playoffs will have the added bonus of discovering Call of Duty's latest context for shooting guns at people.

Someone needs to just get this partnership over the hump and create a game featuring basketball players shooting each other in the face. I call dibs on Metta World Peace.
Someone needs to just get this partnership over the hump and create a game featuring basketball players shooting each other in the face. I call dibs on Metta World Peace.

I don't want to blow anybody's mind right now, but it appears as though Activision is, in fact, working on a new Call of Duty game. Not only that, the publisher plans to announce it. Soon.

Activision is currently teasing a May 1 reveal for whatever it plans on calling the expected new entry in the Call of Duty franchise. As this year's title falls on the portion of the bi-yearly release cycle assigned to developer Treyarch, the current smart money seems to be a direct sequel to the developer's insanely successful 2010 title, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Whatever it ends up being, we'll all find out about it together on May 1--provided, of course, that we're all watching the NBA playoffs on TNT, as that is where the reveal will appear. That is, of course, provided Activision is able to keep stuff under wraps until then. We all remember what happened last year, don't we?

I really wish they'd just let these games stand on their own for at least 2 years before making another one. Do something different for fuck sake. Call of Duty is just a yearly update now, it's like a sport game.

I hope it's Black Ops 2. I loved Black Ops for it's online and single player, never touched zombies though. The only Call of Duty games I truly enjoyed we're Call of Duty 4 and Black Ops but I'll jump on again since I skipped MW3.

What happened to that old Activision philosophy, David Crane's challenge to make constrained hardware do new and exciting things back during the Atari VCS / 2600.... instead of making games just a iterative process.

I literally do not care at all. I've finally obtained the opportunity to mess with Modern Warfare 3, and I give it a week before I get bored of it.

I'm up for another mindless one man army Black Ops game that I can rent, blow shit up in, and never play again.

So many people slamming the franchise. Let the hate flow through you.

I have no issues whatsoever with Call of Duty, it just ain't my kind of shooter anymore. I'm open to giving it another chance, though; these games are popular for a good reason.

Black Ops basic framework wasn't bad, I kinda like the jumping around in different time periods. That said, the story falls apart pretty quickly, and Sam Worthington's inconsistent accent didn't help things.

So remember when everyone was sick of WW2 shooters and then COD4 came out. Why can't that happen again.

They are stuck in a formula, that still makes money, we'll have to hope a different developer comes up with the next big thing.

Respawn are probably the best bet for a genre changer.

I predict that the next CoD game will have something involving shooting thousands upon thousands of people who talk differently than the white Anglo-Saxon protagonists.

I've played every major call of duty game, and I completely agree, while I think I liked the first two, the only games in the series I've loved has been CoD4 and Black Ops, which were both pretty great. I loved the online in Black Ops, it feel quite balanced, the devs were great at supporting the game after launch making it even more balanced, and they really listened to the community. MW2 and MW3 have been the complete opposite of Black Ops, so you didn't miss anything by skipping it, horrible online mode, crappy balance and some of the worst spawning I've ever seen, ugh.

MW3 story wise was as weak and uninteresting as CoD 3. Black Ops story was bloody fantastic. I would be 101% down for Black Ops 2.

I wish they'd wise up and just drop the single-player campaign. Why do they even try anymore?

People who enjoy single-player gaming aren't exactly fans of Call of Duty.

I always say I'm done with CoD but I can't help but get excited every year. I definitely enjoyed the Black Ops single player though. It would be cool to see something similar.

Call of Duty is a lot of things to a lot of people - that's why it's able to sell 20 million copies.

Based on Giant Bomb's achievements thing, 83% of MW3 players started the SP campaign and 60% finished it. That may not be exactly representative of the whole CoD audience, but I doubt it's that far off. That means the SP campaign still adds some value for the majority of their customers, even if it isn't the main draw or where most of the time spent playing that game goes. Dropping it probably wouldn't be very wise at all, considering how negligible the development costs are compared to the money those games pull in.

until COD4 came along and shifted the attention. the single player was the main focus of Call of Duty for a long time. Shit go back to the E3 they announced COD4 most of the stuff they were showing off was the single player.

Will it be as broken on PC at launch as Blops was?

I won't be finding out, as the single player campaign is not enough value and the multiplayer is bland, slow-paced tripe.
