Capcom Confirms Phoenix Wright Movie From...Takashi Miike?

Because what Phoenix Wright needed was the touch of a violent director.

Hiroki Narimiya as the lovable Phoenix Wright.

It's hard to believe the director of Iichi the Killer and Audition, both notoriously violent (and awesome) films, is behind the lens of Capcom's now-filming Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney movie, but it's true.

After Miike casually mentioned this as his next project earlier in the week, Capcom has confirmed Miike's the one helping bring Phoenix Wright to life. Capcom plans to release the film (at least in Japan) in spring 2012, but as the news is coming out of Japan, there's no word so far on whether this film will make it outside of there.

Capcom did release Keiji Inafune's wacky live-action Dead Rising production over Xbox Live, though, so anything's possible.

Capcom's also detailed a few bits of casting, including Hiroki Narimiya as Phoenix Wright, Takumi Saito as Miles Edgeworth and Mirei Kiritani as Maya Fey. Is that good casting? You tell me, guys.

By the way, this is what Miike is usually responsible for:

Loved Audition and Ichi the Killer, never played Phoenix Wright

cool awesome

I know it's ridiculous but I'm not the one who designed this quest:)

Horrible. Whatever the casting would be, I just don't want seeing any of the game's characters as real people. Just that Phoenix Wright image makes me cringe.

Now that is awesome.  Really hope it turns out.

Hahahaha!!! I only really care about Gumshoe's casting, the man is legendary in my book.

EDIT: Oh shit! TAKASHI MIIKE?!!!!!!!!! *mind blown*

woah miike is on this... I would give that a watch.

Fuck yes! I hope this gets subbed and released out here. Or at least does well enough to bring out more PW games actually featuring Phoenix.

More like Phoenix Wrong.

Unless this movie ends with Wright just going apeshit and murdering everyone in the courtroom in a ridiculously violent manner, I don't care.

Then again, considering Miike's past work, I'd say that's at least 40% possible.

Objection!

...not really but someone had to say it.

edit: dang it

I figured an anime would have been the path the series would go instead of a live action film, so colour me surprised. No clue on the casting, so we'll have to see. Apparently from leaked photos, it does seem to follow some key locations from the first game.

This is awesome news!

This seems like it has potential for absolute terribad. Don't they know that the only way something like Phoenix Wright would ever work is as Anime?

I love Takashi Miike. I love Phoenix Wright. This is fucking AMAZING news.

These characters should all be played by Europeans. What kind of nihonjin has a name like "Miles Edgeworth"?

While I don't see this being able to capture the same kind of magic and weirdness of the actual Phoenix Wright games, I'm hoping it manages to have it's own kind of insanity going for it that will make it awesome in it's own way.

Only time will tell.

Knowing Miike, there will be Incest Rape!

Posted by Sin4profit

oh shit! can't wait for the lactation scene, and the microphone anal rape scene, and the guys getting cut in half scene, and the combo incest/kiddy porn scene, and the guy eats soup made out of that other guy's jizz scene, and the awkward disturbing feel of it all!

Mirei Kiritani is relatively new to movie, she mostly did TV drama in Japan. Hiroki Narimiya is probably most famous for his role in NANA. And Takumi Saito was in 13 Assassins (he was the young lord whose was kill after Lord Naritsugu raped his wife in the beginning of the movie) Overall, I think this is probably a B movie.

Well at least this time it's not a musical where the entire cast is made up of women

Takashi Miike knows that he can turn down job offers right?

I know it's a joke, but none of this will be in the movie. It's a light comedy that will be based on case 1-4 (Turnabout Goodbyes) in the game.

Here's a comparison pic of Maya and her actor:

She really does look like her, so that's neat. Still don't see why I should care about this, though.

Miike is such a weird choice but I'm also really excited to see how it turns out.

Miike is a pretty diverse director. He did the Yatterman movie a couple of years back, so this isn't outside his wheelhouse.

Posted by Forcen

I'd watch a Ace Attourney animé. Not sure about this...

Posted by JackiJinx

And now I am scared of the future. Thanks,  Miike.

...I.....

Uh.... wow, this could either end up being incredibly awesome or absolutely disastrous.

Why didn't they just do an anime, though?

Posted by Veektarius

It's obvious that most of the characters are white.  Miscasting!

Posted by AuthenticM

I saw Ichi the Killer about a month ago. That movie is a shitwreck.

Posted by Sammann31415

Miike's had a different kind of body of work lately.  If you haven't checked out 13 Assassins yet, you definitely should.  It's sort of a retelling of Seven Samurai, and it's done really well.  I think he's the perfect guy to make a Japanese Phoenix Wright movie.

Miike is a fantastic director. It's a shame he'll only be known for his super violent over the top films.

Well, it depends. In the Japanese versions of Ace Attorney, the games take place in Japan. In The Western versions, they take place in the U.S. As such, the ethnicities and origins of the characters differ between versions as well.

Franziska von Karma, who in the Western versions is said to come from Germany, is called Mei Karuma in Japan... and I think in those versions she comes from America. Funny, huh?

Opinions are always relative.
As for me, and aside from God's Puzzle, his best films are indeed the super violent over the top ones, especially Ichi the Killer and Visitor Q (the latter is probably his best in terms of direction). Not saying the others aren't good, just not as good (for me, of course). God's Puzzle is awesome, though :)

I'll watch it.

FUCK YES.  That is all.

@eshchan: To be fair, if you're going to go out and do a big-budget musical version of most anything in Japan, you might as well go all the way and commission  the Takarazuka Revue to do it. Gender-bending castings aside, they have been really famous in Japan since the 20s for a reason in that they tend to churn out good work.

very interesting. watch alert

Posted by Mento

For some reason, I keep thinking this'll turn out like The Happiness of the Katakuris. It wasn't a particularly violent movie compared to Miike's usual standard and managed to mix goofy comedy and bizarre murders pretty well. And it was a musical too, in case they decide to go back to that.

It doesn't matter who's directing, the second Maya uses her magic powers, it's all going downhill. He should of just made a Steel Samurai: Warrior of Neo Old Tokyo movie instead.

sure ill bite, that dude can make anything. Too bad he didn't win that palme d'or at cannes

Posted by Reverseface

This movie can only be made in Japan it's too crazy to be done anywhere else, also i thought Wright was a white dude JUSTSAYIN'

awesome :]

What could go wrong?

Posted by Hailinel

Takashi Miike has done more than just insane violence and horror.  He's actually a pretty diverse director, and given some of his other projects, this doesn't surprise me.
