Costume Quest 'Grubbins on Ice' DLC Hitting This December

A new area to explore, more houses to raid!

A winter-themed downloadable add-on is coming to Costume Quest at some point in December, a GameSpot-exclusive look has revealed. Grubbins on Ice, as the content is being called, will expand on the game's story, taking place after the events of the RPG, which had you saving your brother or sister from the clutches of the troll-like and candy-obsessed Grubbins.

Grubbins on Ice takes place in a wintry Repugia, an area that game creator Double Fine says is slightly larger than a level in the core game. You'll be plopped into this world during a time of political struggle, one that will conveniently require you to trick-or-treat the area's various houses in order to gather supporters or hurt opposition. A sibling factors into this all as well, but I suggest you check out GameSpot for the full scoop on that.

No Caption Provided

New costumes and new powers for both battle and world navigation have been confirmed, and as a bonus, Grubbins on Ice will offer fixes for the core game. The text speed will be lowered for us slower folk, select phone posts will become save points, and you'll be able to pause during cut-scenes. Not bad, but it'll cost you an unspecified number of Microsoft Points.

Hey, more Costume Quest! You wanted more, right?

Depending on the price, I'd be interested in revising the world of Costume Quest.

I expect the hilarious dialog will point this out rather than skirting the issue. And thankfully, it should be readable this time!

The original game was an unexpected treat for me. I only learned it existed days before release from TimOfLegend's Twitter feed. Despite his and DoubleFine's excellent track record, I didn't see this coming. I bought it as soon as the demo ended and completed it in a night. (Hello, 4:00 AM!) This expansion will be an instant purchase.

DeathSpank is the only game I ever bought as soon as the demo asked me to.
Costume Quest was the only game I ever bought without even bothering to download the demo.

Fuck yeah I want more.  Played the whole thing in one sitting - not because it was short, but because I loved it to death.

Haven't finished the main quest yet. Hopefully, I'll be done with it before the DLC gets released. Big fan of the game, though.

I spot a Bobbing For Apples area

Which likely means there isn't any new gameplay in this. It's just the same stuff as the regular game, which already rehashed its gameplay concepts a little too frequently.

I thought it was weird seeing "Gamespot" on the article's picture.  This isn't the first time its happened, a GS video was embedded for the new Ace Combat game, and it was weird then.

@HomemadeZiggurat: When a story is exclusive to one publication, it's illegal for anyone else to publish certain parts of it. This is the reason for citing GameSpot and pointing people there for more information. This happens everywhere all the time. Can we please stop talking about it now?

Actually no. Citing sources is for our benefit, so that we can make an informed decision about how to perceive it. News outlets are not legally bound to report accurate or factual news, and therefore are not legally bound to cite sources. Obviously if they actually ripped off the article that would be copyright, but Gamespot cannot OWN information about a game.

Because I've played it now, and knowing that there is more being produced reduces my feeling of satisfaction at having "completed" Costume Quest. I felt that it lasted exactly as long as it should have. If it was a third longer I wouldn't have liked that. Now I'm being expected to dish out more money and dedicate more time to being "up"on my costume quest.

This isn't as bad a Shadowbroker, which actually contained something which I had been expecting as part of ME3, but its still annoying as all hell.

People get annoyed over really odd stuff to me.  Either you want to play more of it and buy the DLC or you don't.   Feeling like you HAVE to buy it for some reason is odd to me.

Let me put this another way. When you buy a game, you don't just expect to spend 6 hours or however much time playing the game. You also expect to spend the rest of your life being impacted by that experience in some way (which may be significant or subtle). Having a sequel come out impacts that residual experience, because your memories of the first game are going to be coloured by the second. That goes even more for DLC, which doesn't even pretend to be a seperate entity.

Now imagine that you don't play the sequel or DLC, but know that it exists. In both cases, but especially the latter, there is going to be a sense of incompleteness atatched to your memories of the game, because you know that there has been more added to the experience that you haven't seen.

Costume Quest was a complete experience (a light-hearted one to be sure, but an experience). Adding more to it is not likely to improve somebodies memories of the game, so DLC is not a good idea for it.

To put this in more broad terms, I don't think that anybody would be very happy if the director of Downfall started working on Downfall 2: Richard Nixon. It might be great and deep and intense, but it would still be unnecessary and make the whole thing smell badly of capitalism.

EDIT: To put it yet another way: Star Wars prequels.

@nintendoeats:     I don't feel that way at all about stuff.  There is an extremely small number of games that I remember long after finishing, so I definitely don't expect my life to be impacted in some way(no matter how small) by every game I play.  I've also never been one of those people that feel a poor sequel to something tarnishes the original.  I pretty much hated the first Assassin's Creed.  The fact that I really enjoy AC2 and Brotherhood doesn't change my feelings on AC1.  I thought the first Saw movie was really good...all the ones since then have been pretty horrible, but that doesn't make me think any less of the original.

As far as the whole completeness thing goes, I get that some people are real completionists  and feel that have to do everything/get everything/etc, I'm just not one of those people.  So, I just don't feel that I haven't completed a game or series just because DLC comes out.  I play what games and DLC I want and don't play the ones I don't want.  Basically, I guess it's that if DLC comes out for something I care enough about that I would feel incomplete by not playing it(like with Mass Effect 2), then I buy and play the DLC.  If the DLC is for a game that I don't care enough about to actually buy the DLC, then I couldn't care less.  I don't buy DLC to feel like I had a complete experience of some game, I buy DLC when I really enjoy the game and want to play more of it.   I don't really look at it any differently than buying a sequel to a game or an expansion for a PC game.

@metalhead87: Ok, if thats how you feel about it all the power to you. But gathering from your post, I think you do at least see where I'm coming from.

Though I would say that you may somewhat underestimate the power of things to stay with you. I might be a little hyper-aware of this, especially considering that my life pretty much consists of school, food, sleep and games, but in my experience it is a generally true thing.

@nintendoeats:   Yeah, all I was trying to say with my initial post was that it's odd to me when people get annoyed/mad just because DLC exists, not whether it's good or bad.  As for me "underestimating the power of things to stay with you,"  I'm sure that's just a different experience for different people.  I've been playing games since the NES....I pretty much can't remember a time when I didn't play video games, but there is very, very few that I have memories of.  Not saying that I haven't been impacted in some way by various games, just that I certainly don't expect that from every game I play.

I just noticed that this time, rather than citing the source at the end of the article (eg, just saying via gamespot), he actually says 'I suggest you go look at Gamespot's article for the full scoop'. Its a slight difference like that which would suggest promotion, but hey, Brad probably didn't mean anything by it.

Again, Gamespot can't own information. If they could, than everybody posting in this topic would be a dirty filthy pirate, because we are spreading the story as well. All Gamespot can do is get an exclusive interview or statement from Double Fine, giving them first (and the most complete) access to the story.

I wish they would of come up with a new concept for the battles.  Trick or treating at Christmas time is in no way appealing to me.  Maybe they could of done some kind of door to door Christmas caroling    thing, now that would be season appropriate!

God damn them! They've done this because they know how much I loved the game, and they thought I had too much expendable income.

Guess I've got to hold out on Limbo a bit longer, this has jumped to the front of the queue.
