Disney Cancels Pirates Of The Caribbean: Armada Of The Damned

The Tron team's promising RPG gets killed and some people are losing their jobs.

Propaganda Games' promising RPG Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned has been cancelled and word on the street is that possibly around 100 people at Propaganda have been given pink slips as a result of this decision.

Disney Interactive Studios confirmed the cancellation yesterday afternoon following a rumor report from Kotaku stating that the game was axed and people lost their jobs. Here's the boilerplate statement from DIS, which mentions that the publisher has "completed a restructuring of Propaganda Games" that has affected "one of the studio's two development teams."

Disney Interactive Studios confirms the cancellation of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned video game which was scheduled to be released in 2011. As a result of this decision, Disney Interactive Studios completed a restructuring of Propaganda Games, its Vancouver, BC internal studio, affecting one of the studio's two development teams.

The studio is still in active production of Tron: Evolution, the video game, which will be released on December 7, 2010 with additional DLC (downloadable content) support following the game's release.

== TEASER ==Propaganda Games, as noted in the above, will continue developing Tron: Evolution: The Video Game. Tron is still set to be released later in December and the lone team at the studio will continue to support the movie tie-in post-release with DLC.

Armada of the Damned apparently looked good when Jeff saw it briefly earlier this summer, and critics seem to agree that it had potential despite being one of those dreaded movie games. You can read Jeff's take on it here if you'd like, though, you might leave it feeling a bit blue considering what has happened.

This does suck because a good Pirate game would be awesome, and at the very least the PotC license would be one most conducive to translating to a quality game.

This is a shame, there's not enough RPGs these days and it seemed interesting. Would of rather Tron was cancelled than this.

Booo!  I was looking forward to this game :(

Posted by fwylo

Damn this actually looked kind of good.

Posted by sins_of_mosin

I had hopes for the game.....
Posted by Jeffmoocow

It's a real shame after hearing about it on the Bombcast I was really looking forward to playing it.

This game sounded good; too bad.

Just read that article by Jeff. Gotta say now, this news makes me sad, it seemed like it was interesting and could have potentially been a good game.

Haahahah. The one game that looked good.

Nice job.

What a major bummer. I was actually really looking forward to this one. :(

To answer your question, trailer, I would have been Legendary.

Posted by MisterMouse

bummer, it sounded like a cool game.

Edited by Nytrik

Oh wow. I didn't expect that at all.

It's actually really saddening.

That sucks,  was interested in this game.

Good.  The Pirates of the Caribbean movies sucked the big wanger.  Games would have ended up doing the same.

Posted by Lanechanger

one could say the game was... cursed... from the start?

it's weird they're canceling one of their few games that had gathered a lot of positive buzz.

Posted by BigChief

Sucks not only because it sounded like the game was shaping up to be good, but all those people losing their jobs? Messed up.

Posted by justin3d

Ug...I was excited for this. It looked like a really ambitious title and not just a movie cash-in.

The world needs more pirate games.

STOP TRYING TO MAKE MMOS.
The genre is the #1 cause of developer shutdowns.

Just focus on making a really good RPG. Yea, that's right. I said it.
WHERE HAVE ALL THE RPGS GONE?

Demon's Souls was my last taste of good role-playing. :(

No one cares about POTC anymore?

They manage to make me pumped about a pirates of the caribbean game and then they cancel it. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

I don't see why.  I agree the movies weren't particularly good, but this was very loosely based on them.  It was essentially a Fable-esque, open world game with morality choices, with sailing and piratey things.  Had a lot of potiential, and what we'd seen of it looked really quite good.

This wasn't an MMO. It was an RPG.

Completely bummed about this.  Most all the early previews of this game had people saying it looked pretty good, and I would have loved a pirate RPG.  I hate when this kinda stuff happens.

@EgoCheck616:  This game wasn't an MMO.

LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME

Posted by MeatSim

That was abrupt.

Posted by Olivaw

Man, I liked the first couple Pirates movies. And I liked what they were trying to do here, making a Mass Effect-ish kind of RPG.

This sucks.

Posted by lightsoda

What. Why? Damnit, I want to know why.

Posted by Genjai

This does suck! DIS actually creating a good looking game with a Disney franchise? Great! Cancel it and have everyone lose 100 jobs? Suck balls.

Posted by Mars_Cleric

I is dissapoint
Posted by JamesBoyce

This is unfortunate... never cool when people lose their jobs.  Plus, this game actually looked pretty cool.  Wonder why it got axed?

Posted by KaiUnderneath

What a shame.
Could've been cool.
And best wishes to the people who all lost their jobs.

Posted by Kindredwarr

This sucks! I was actually looking forward to this game, it sounded like a Piratey spin on Fable and looked a lot better then the Tron game.

Posted by PaleEye

I didn't really like the movie series but this actually was starting to look pretty cool. I am sad to see it has been canceled.  Maybe someone else can pick it up and remove all the Pirates of the Caribbean references and just make a decent Pirates game.

Posted by Areyow
@EgoCheck616:  While I agree wholeheartedly that the risk/reward of MMO-cash-cow-iness is not worth it, this game was an action-RPG in the vein of a God of War with more RPG (so maybe think God of Mass Effect...but probably not nearly as polished as either).

I saw the E3 demo for it, and it did look quite good.  I think its a shame, since the game seemed only loosely affiliated with the movies, and the world needs more pirate games.
Posted by FritzDude

Sad... Really sad.

Posted by coaxmetal

Bummer, this looked like it was going to be cool. Also, huge bummer they canned everyone working on it.

Posted by Kukkaruukku

Well that sucks. I was looking forward to it.

Posted by Jimbo

The game looked good, and the first PotC game is definitely worth playing, so there was every chance this wouldn't suck.

I don't understand this from their perspective at all.  They're well into development, they had a little bit of buzz going, initial impressions seemed good and they have a MASSIVE summer blockbuster coming out next summer carrying the brand.  You won't be able to move for PotC advertising next year.  How does it not make sense to finish this game up and get it on shelves?

Posted by GunslingerPanda

Ah, man, this looked good. Should have cancelled Tron instead, PotC is far more profitable and only fools with rose tinted glasses like Tron, anyway.

Posted by Jeffk38uk

In a rare situation, but I the PotC game looked much more interesting than the current Tron game to be quiet honest, so its a shame this has happened.
