Doom Resurrected On The iPhone Today

Would you pay $9.99 for a Doom game where you can't walk everywhere? Did you already?

Those of you who play games on your iPhones may be interested to know that Doom Resurrection, a shall-we-say "reduced" version of id's classic corridor shooter, is on the App Store today. I can't say anything other than the "Doom" name catches my eye about this one, because it's not much of a Doom game that doesn't let you walk wherever you want.

id's John Carmack more diplomatically refers to Resurrection as a "guided experience," which isn't nearly enough to get me to pony up the $9.99 to try it. Who's taking the plunge? Most curiously, I've heard the game runs way more smoothly on the 3GS than the 3G or iPod Touch. Anyone have commentary on that situation?

Aftfer finding out that this was a guided experience, I kind of lost interest in the game. However, I've heard good things about it from people who have already bought it, even on the 3G (though appearently the framerate is nearly a flat 60 on the 3GS compared to more like 20-30 on the 3G).

Is it free?

So I'm gonna take a guess that this will not run on the original iPhone.

I'm going to end up keeping the money in my pocket, I dont think spending $10 on a "guided experience" is a novel idea. To tell the truth, this looks more like a tech demo of the 3GS's power than a true testament to the name of Doom.

I'm interested in what it's like, but, 10 dollar apps definitely need a Lite version to try out.

I agree. I can't pay for any apps over 1$ without trying a Lite version. It's too easy for me to dislike iPhone games (mainly because of controls), so they should provide LITE's for all the 10$ titles.

Looks like it's what Doom III would have been if it was a Nintendo 64 game. That was made by people who had never played Doom before.

Hmm. I'm tempted to get this one, if only to see it on the 3GS. I generally don't play first person shooters on the iphone, as i'm not keen on using on screen analog sticks. So this actually seems pretty good to me. I think i'll probably wait and see if they reduce the price or release a lite version.

I have played Doom on too many platforms for this severely gimped version to be worth it.

Posted by Metal_Mills

Is it just me or is the frame rate in that trailer truly hideous?

One of the absolute top must buys of thte year.
screw all of you short sighted "oh its on rails som im gonna hate on it by default" people ! That includes you Brad

When you consider that portable games on the PSP and DS are 20 to 35 bucks, then its not unreasonable to pay 10 bucks.  We have rail shooters like House of the Dead.

Railshooters aren't worth playing without a lightgun in my opinion.

Read the article before posting, instead of just watching the video.

So... it's a rail shooter with no light gun and a chunky framerate?  That looks pretty atrocious to me.

I downloaded it earlier and have played a couple levels of it on my 2G iPod Touch, I'm really enjoying so far. i think it was definitely worth the £5.99

I'll just stick with Doom RPG and wait for Doom RPG 2 if I want Doom on the go.

Does anyone else notice the fact that the DOOM 3 theme song sounds suspiciously like a certain famous Tool song? I.E. Lateralus....   same beat, same notes, same tempo. Come the fuck on!

Posted by John1912

Im conflicted.  That impressed me that it was on a phone, and yet the graphics kinda sucked, but it was on a fucking phone!  Not buying a Iphone, never going to buy that game, but hey, im kinda impressed.

@Andborn: I noticed :)

@Andborn:  It sounds like the remix, even the voices in the background.

Man that Doom 3 song is so Tool-wannabe-esque, it makes my Lateralus bleed. I'm gonna go drink some cough syrup and party like it's 2001.

It'll be a while before my phone takes over as sole portable gaming device at this pace. But it'll happen, especially if there's an Apple Nintendo merger (wish and hope).

I should really read more comments before commenting. I saw Tool in Dallas in Summer 2002. I have a feeling I went to the same concert as John Carmack. I kinda expected popular music to make a shift in that direction instead of this other rehashing of the "THE" prefixed bands from the 60's-90's.

I remember replacing the music in Arcanum with the String Quartet Tribute Tool music in summer 2003.

I also don't think I'd remember the original Quake for what it was if not for the built-in cd-reading (meant to be used with the Trent Reznor supplied disc soundtrack) which I used Pantera's 1996 "The Great Southern Trendkill" to play as background music in the levels. It was a great match actually! Starts of strong in the attract demo, then slow and atmospheric once you get a little bit into the game as it eventually builds up to a more frantic slaughter.

Ah nostalgialcohol.

Imagine what kind of game Doom 3 would have been if the sting version was used as inspiration. Bring back Steampunk right and proper, good sir-bourg.

I saw Doom and forked over the cash, did not hear about this "guided experience" and was sorely disappointed by that and the fact that it runs on my 3g like the frame rate is freaking negative

Posted by Ujio

Yeah, no thanks. I've had the original Doom on my G1 for a while now and I DLed it for free from the Android market. $10 for that shit? No thanks, Apple.

Posted by wafflestomp

Tool did do the Doom 3 song.

@Brad: I agree, $10 for a guided experience through Doom is way to much money. Especially when the full game is $5 on Xbox Live Marketplace.
Posted by Nonethewiser

The fact that its a guided shooter doesn't rub me the wrong way at all, considering that it is an IPHONE GAME.  What sucks is that games ported to the IPHONE like this need to be rail shooters... at least until a developer can prove otherwise. The controls on the iPhone just arent smooth for gaming. That being said I thought the graphics looked pretty solid for an iphone game.

Posted by OldManLollipop

So that's what Doom 3 would look like if it was on the Nintendo 64.

Honestly Jimbo, I would much rather play the actual Doom then this. And not just because its a rail shooter. It just doesn't look fun to play.

I phone trailers would be so much more realistic if they had a big finger in the way.

Posted by ahoodedfigure

Wow, I'm getting Quake 1 flashbacks.

Posted by BR4DL3I9H

I would much rather they kept the older graphics and made the animations more fluid. The gameplay itself looks jittery, and doesn't look much fun to play.

Posted by Goly

oh wow that looks terrible. if they only released the first doom on the iphone, with freedom to go wherever you want, then i'd probably get it.

@Buccura:
I'v beaten DOOM RPG a dozen times on my Sony W810i (which i'v had for three yrs now and it still works like its brand new, love this phone!!) and no way would i pay 10 bucks for that ugly rail shooter!

@wafflestomp: Says who? Tool didn't touch this.
Posted by super_machine

A $10 game like this really needs a demo. I could not justify the price tag without playing it first.

Posted by Zenfar

Beyond cool!  Of course XBox has had it for a while.

Posted by Kohe321

This makes me wish I had an iphone

Posted by Krakn3Dfx

That looks awful.

You know John Carmack has sold out to the man when he says "I wouldn't call it a 'rail shooter' as much as a 'guided experience'".

Yeah, I would call it a steaming pile of garbage, but I'm sure people will buy it.

Posted by Crash_Happy

Carmack says "I wouldn't call it selling out as much as agreeing to do whatever I'm told"

Posted by Media_Master

Still don't have and iphone because I just need to call people

It's fantastic and I think it will influence future shooters on the iPhone to come.  The game looks great and the accelerometer controls actually work better than you could probably imagine.  It's a little short but it has such high production value I'd consider the $9.99 fair.  If you're on the fence and you love Doom, however, I'd suggest picking it up.  It feels like one of the first true first person perspective games for the iPhone.

@Krakn3Dfx: Have you played it?  It seems like you just watched the video and drew a conclusion.  That's a poor way to pass judgement.  Granted, it should have a lite version for people to try, but I think you'll find it's a great game.
