EA Cancels NBA Live... Again

This is now the second time in three years, in case you're keeping score at home.

REEEEEEEEJECTED!
REEEEEEEEJECTED!

File this one under the "Yeah, we probably all knew this was going to happen, but still..." category. EA has cancelled NBA Live 13, its little-seen proposed reentry into the NBA video game market after sitting out the last couple of seasons. Yes, EA has cancelled another basketball game.

In case you've forgotten, back in 2010 EA was thinking about revitalizing its critically dumped on NBA Live series with an all-new developer. The game, NBA Elite 11, never made it onto store shelves. Well, actually, it did make it onto a few shelves, but only because EA literally cancelled the game after it had already begun to ship to stores. The reason? Overwhelming quality issues, the likes of which have been well documented on YouTube via the lucky few who managed to snag a copy.

NBA Live 13 was to be the publisher's triumphant return to the NBA market, to challenge the recently unopposed NBA 2K series. However, when the game failed to emerge in any kind of playable fashion following an apparently spotty E3 demo, murmurs began of an inevitable cancellation. Some had a hard time believing EA's apparent inability to make a halfway playable basketball game would really cause them to cancel yet another basketball game. And yet, here we are.

I really don't even know what to say to this. It boggles the mind that essentially two years of development went into redoing a game that had already been redone, and the result was still so bad, it couldn't be released. And yet, again, here we are.

EA's post at official NBA Live 13 site signals an intention to try again next year. So look for our eventual coverage of NBA Live 14's cancellation around this time next year. I mean, they've gotta go for the three-peat, right?

After NBA Elite 11 I have the impression they started building a game entirely from the ground-up. Two years development time for a game that's being built from scratch is not that much, so I'm not finding this all that surprising. If they cancel it again next year, then I'll be flabbergasted.

Maybe they should just embrace that NBA Jam is their official basketball franchise now. I'd be okay with that.

Surprised they didnt take the last working version and then up the graphics and all that. I mean sure it would still get ripped apart by the 2K series but it would still sell like crazy since the Live series always sold on name more then quality since that series has been crap since like 2005.

It won't happen, but I'm waiting for a similar 'tragedy' with the FIFA brand that results in them buying and resurrecting Adidas Power Soccer.

@MildMolasses: Good point. I wasn't even thinking about FIFA.

NFL/NHL they have no competition so they make the same game (mostly) year after year.

I think it's hysterical how people are angry. Release a bad game, anger. Don't release a bad game, anger. Release a good game, probably anger still.

If the NBA doesn't drop them first. I can't imagine that the people in charge of the league's licensing are happy with EA's incompetence when they were supposed to be delivering game releases.

2K creating competition by making a solid game and not some BS licensing issue with the NBA. Good for them.

The NBA is still making their money though, just not from EA. If it was an exclusive-license holder they would've been sued a year ago at least. As it stands, EA is essentially just handing over the NBA a small extra amount of money without fear of it tarnishing the NBA brand. Essentially free money. With that said, they will likely avoid exclusive-deals for the next few years at least.

Also, EA has had some success with NBA Jam. So theres that at least...

EA cut your losses. use the NBA license the only way you know how to anymore with NBA Jam. im a huge basketball fan and im so happy that 2k makes there games. i feel bad for football fans, while madden isnt terrible it would still be nice to let other developers (2k) have a try.

Fashionable EA hatred aside, I say good on them for realizing that a game isn't ready and not releasing it.

That's not surprising. They made the last Live game in like 2009 right?

Also get Krukow and Kuiper back and do MVP Baseball 13 already EA.

Electronic Arts should pink slip everyone at EA Mythic (Mythic Games) and make the NBA Live 13 development team watch. That's the only way to motivate the Live team to work harder...also that is just how EA rolls.

i'm always curious to find out where exactly things fall apart in situations like this (leadership, design, etc). It's not often that a big title can have its project completely fall apart this late in the life cycle, let alone twice to the same franchise. Sad, i'm sure there's legitimately talented people who are getting hurt by this.

You have to admit - there's a certain amount of delicious karma here.

EA essentially forced 2K out of the football game business by locking up the NFL license exclusively several years ago. In the years since, 2K have come to release the dominant NBA game instead, and EA have wasted untold money developing and canning theirs.

I feel bad for the developers toiling away on these games. I don't feel bad for EA at all.

Pretty much.

EA bought the NFL and have since put no effort into making Madden better, content instead to simply crap out a game yearly and collect the easy money.

However, I think we also need to thank the NBA. When word first came out about EA buying NFL exclusivity, the NBA said it wasn't interested in such arrangements, believing that competition would make better product that didn't tarnish the brand. They proved to be right: NBA 2K is a critically-acclaimed series, and EA can't just fart out bad games like they do with Madden, so they've had to sit out three basketball seasons, with only one disc and one download NBA Jam to fill the void in their schedule.

NBA 2K is the better game, so it deserves to dominate, just like Sony's MLB series and, ironically, EA's FIFA. A good game doesn't need a competition-killing arrangement to sell.

Hilarious!!! Live wouldve sold more than Nba Baller Beats!!! but they couldn't risk the Game Industry poor ratings!! EA is already in battle with Activision... It wouldn't surprise me if Activision Takes the NBA from up under their noses!!
