GameStop Forcibly Removing OnLive Coupons from Deus Ex PC Copies, Because They're GameStop [UPDATED]

A memo sent from on high tells GameStop employees to open copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and remove all OnLive coupons contained within.

UPDATE: Square-Enix, Deus Ex's publisher, replied to our request for comment with, "We have no comment." We're waiting to hear back from OnLive about the situation.

UPDATE x2: OnLive also declined to comment on the matter. GameStop, however, had a brief comment to add on the subject:

"We pulled the coupons because, like all retailers, we prefer not to promote our competitors and their competing offerings and services in our stores. Unfortunately, the coupon was packed without our prior knowledge."

Oh, great. That obviously settles everything. Thanks, GameStop!

--

In case you hadn't had a recent reminder that the brains behind video game retailer GameStop and its policies are like the villains in a bad '80s comedy, let today's news be the refresher you need to reassert your desire to never, ever go to that place to buy games.

GameStop management (pictured) were unavailable for comment.
GameStop management (pictured) were unavailable for comment.

According to a picture obtained by GameSpy from a GameStop employee, those working at GameStop retail locations have been instructed by corporate management to open any and all copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and remove the OnLive coupons included with the disc for a free digital copy. Yes, GameStop is actually opening new copies of games, removing content provided to you by the publisher as a bonus for your purchase, and then selling that copy as new. New. As in fresh, or unopened, or unused. NEW.

The OnLive promotion was just announced yesterday, and apparently GameStop didn't take too kindly to the idea of coupons for a copy of the game being included from a competing service. OnLive, which deals in streaming-on-demand versions of games, is in direct competition with GameStop's Impulse service, which currently sells digital copies of PC titles and is in beta testing for on-demand streaming as well.

Ars Technica separately confirmed from a GameStop spokesperson that this policy is 100% accurate.

How do you do this and not expect people to be pissed?
How do you do this and not expect people to be pissed?

Understandably, customers who purchased Human Revolution from GameStop are irate, both at having content they were provided by the publisher forcibly removed, and by GameStop selling a game that has been opened and tampered with as "new." While GameStop's corporate management likely won't care too terribly much about this outrage, being the soulless caricatures of humanity's horrendous insatiability and inhumanity toward their fellow man that they are, they might actually start caring if these sorts of abysmal practices actually begin to affect their bottom line.

As such, I'd just like to include a reminder that there are roughly a gajilliondy other retail outlets that sell video games. Some of which even aren't run by the industry's equivalent of greedy, thieving goblins.

@Lights_Up_The_Shaft: Not really...IGN embeds Gamespot videos on their site(the FFXIII-2 exclusive in particular). Kotaku featured one of Klepeks stories during the WM apocalypse. Gaming sites usually end up citing each other in their articles and exclusive videos. And as far as products are concerned, Kindle is sold in Targets even though Amazon is a competing firm but you don't see Target taking out any piece of paper that has any references to Amazon.com. Also Directv does not(or can not) forbid tv channels from showing Dish Network or Comcast commercials.

From CNN Money:

"But late Thursday, company spokesman Hodges said GameStop had changed its policy after talking with Square Enix.

Now, GameStop says it will not sell the opened DXHR packages -- in fact, it won't sell any physical copies of the game at all until Square Enix ships GameStop a version without the OnLive coupon. GameSpot will continue to sell its own digital version of the game in its stores and online."

Ask any good American I know - they refuse to shop at GameStop unless they're forced to.

JB Hi-Fi and EB Games have opening games in Australia for years. When you ask for a sealed copy in store employees look at you funny as if you're some kind of freak. Since both deal in pre-owned games I wonder what kind of assurances they have commited to that the "brand new" copies don't get mixed up with their pre-owned titles.

You know who must be extra pissed about this? Onlive. Imagine trying to get that service out to more people, imagine making that deal to get those coupons into those boxed copies and how much that must have cost them, and now to hear that the world's largest video game retailer is just throwing away the goddamn coupons? I almost think they're preparing litigation as we speak.

And you have to assume that OnLive paid the publisher to get that pack-in included. Having a competitor tamper with something you paid money for is frankly vial and the lowest act I've seen played out in the video game industry.

I know I'm mostly going to fall on deaf ears here (on the internet) but please don't berate or harass this guy.  He's just a middle-management dude who has nothing to do with the policies that the corporate management enacts.  He's only doing his job.  No reason to destroy him.

I would just like to update this for anyone interested:

1 - I can personally confirm the validity of the email.  I know someone on the retail side and he read me the email verbatum as pictured on the screen.
2 - He's personally not doing it.
3 - Gamestop posted on their facebook page a response to this issue which basically reitterated what we have already heard.   Basically that Square/Enix did not enter into a partnership with Gamestop to package these codes which support a competing business.  They also ensured us that the game disks are completely new.  They have since taken this pose down (and had I known I would have copied it so I could have just pasted that here for you)

As a consumer who used to work for EB before the buyout I have since taken my business to Amazon.  Amazon offers an awesome preorder program where many of their games come with a 10 or 20 dollar credit towards future purchases at Amazon.  Basically, you can get your games for 10 to 20 bucks cheaper by preordering them and using the credit on preorders that also have the credit.  Last year (2010) I got 6 new release games for 40 bucks a piece on 360 simply by preordering and then applying that credit to the next preorder (I had to buy one at full price, obviously).

Shop Gamestop if you still want to .. I do understand their point, but what they really should be doing is refusing to sell the game, not opening the copy they are selling me and claiming it's new ... I take new to mean "unopened".  And while I also understand why they "gut" PS3 and Xbox games so they can put the case on the shelf, I won't buy those because the staff has handled the disks.

Anyway, hope this informs :)

I can understand it from their point of view if they weren't told about the coupons and if they wouldn't be compensated for the money the coupons took off.

I have only shopped at Gamestop once, when someone had given me a gift card to them. I bought Mario Galaxy and guess what, every copy was opened with the disks hidden in a drawer behind the counter, being sold as "new". There were no unopened copies anywhere in the store.

Unless without our "prior knowledge" refers to a prior contractual agreement with Square Enix then I believe GS is in violation of trade laws. Their 'open box new' policy should already be in legal question.

If I open it I own it. It is about time the same rule applies to GameStopo. If they try to sell you a 'new' game in an open box insist on the 'used' price and threaten to report them to the BBB as you take your business elsewhere. OR...if you are unethical and know it is a game you can finish in a few days, take it home, play it and then return it in the open-box new condition and demand a full cash refund. "they sales guy never put that sticker on mine box"

Would you trust a pawn shop to sell you an item as 'new', especially if said item was not in the original manufacturers packaging? That would be a great scam. Why do we let GS get away with looking and acting like a pawn shop but charging retailer prices. WTF.

Why do people buy into the bullshit that GS doesn't have the space or security to display factory sealed games? This is 2011, yeah? Are they not privy to the same security every other modern store has? However, it does make for a convenient excuse to mix used and open box new titles together. Which is better, buying a game back from a customer for $15 and selling it for $35 or selling it as open box new for $60?

Gamestop is scummy, no doubt.  Opening something and selling it as new is the issue, and  is a poor business practice. Removal of an item that was included without their knowledge that promotes a competitor is hardly as bad. Especially if they had no idea it was going to be included, which I believe as reports of the OnLive deal did not show up until the game shipped. The correct approach would have been to refuse to sell the game, period. Which is what they should have done, and gone after Square-Enix for including it.

Finally, I am disappointed in Giant Bomb and Alex for the tone and content of this article. It appeared GB was trying to take strides to be seen as a 'serious' gaming news outlet. Posting an article like this undermines that greatly. It reeks of fanboyism you expect to find on some third rate website. If you want to be taken seriously, you have news and editorials clearly marked. The right thing to do would have been to post the story, and then have a post by Alex titled 'Gamestop Sucks' or whatever. Crossing the line between news and hit piece may get cheering from the haters, but is not a good business policy either. Just like opening items and selling them as new....

I haven't been to gamestop in over a year, just buy your games from amazon. And last time I bought a new game from them after pulling it out of the bag I discovered it was unsealed and the disc was scratched. I immediately returned it and bought it from walmart with no issues. Gamestop is just terrible and I don't really see why anyone even goes there anymore, used games are way cheaper online at places like amazon anyways.

As crappy as this seems, if you're running a business you don't put competitor's things in the stuff you're selling. While I don't think they handled this in the best possible way, I also kinda agree with what they did. You don't see Steam promoting things on Amazon. Also, butyraceous.

They've never claimed to not be biased I WANT Alex's opinion and he still delivers the news, gamestop has been doing this for years and it needs to be brought to the public eye and I don't mean just removing some coupon for a service very few care about, the last game I bought from them was Fallout 3 for the PC 12:00 Midnight, got home and noticed that my Pre-ordered copy's seal was broken and I believe I was missing a booklet nothing important but I have never gone back there since then, don't sell me something "new" that your employees have been rooting around in or been told to. EVERY Reporter puts their own spin or opinion in what they say EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM Alex's just comes through much more strongly and if you disagree don't read anything he writes, and really FANBOYISM? Wtf does that even mean? He works for the damn site and what he says and thinks matters I come here for the personality's and the content if you want the Personality taken out of everything go read someone else's cookie cutter Gamestop did this article and clap your hands for them being a good boy, what gamestop did does and do is disgusting and someone IN the industry Should And Will be pissed and upset about it. Everything GB Does is done tongue in cheek and off the cuff and they make us VERY aware of it, if that upsets you there are other places you can go. And most of Patrick's post are extremely professional just stick to those if it seriously upsets you that much.

Gamestop doesn't even have a service competing with OnLive. I know they bought some company in order to spread their douchiness to the realm of streaming game players like OnLive, but right now, they're not a competitor. What a dirty, dirty trick for them to do. And it sucks that they're removing bonus features that Square Enix was giving to gamers FOR FREE.

F*** Gamestop. I'm so glad I stopped buying games there years ago. And just get games through a combo of Gamefly, Amazon new, Amazon one day sales, and borrowing from friends. Although I have no qualms with occasionally going to Gamestop to trade in games for $$$ - not spending that cash at said Gamestop just has to piss off management XD

I don't know why people still shop at GameStop. You can walk into a Best Buy, Target, or WalMart on release day and walk out with a copy of the game without preordering. They have stacks of them. Amazon always has copies in stock on release day. The preorder/used game racket that GameStop has been running is a dirty business that can be easily avoided by going across the street. Vote with your wallet, folks.

If GS did not have prior knowledge 2 things based on the current facts:

1. I have no problem removing the coupon, but only IF...

2. They also let the customer know contents were removed.

Know from the stand point of the title of this article, and its professionalism, i guess Alex's move to East Coast verifies the ignorance that sucks the complete life out of you in that region. I guess i expect more, but to each his own and hey because it's me.

Well to be fair, GameStop is a specialty retailer, so you're more likely to get a small-publisher title.  I'm going to go out on a limb that Best Buy and Wal-Mart didn't order a ton of copies of Catherine or Half-Minute Hero, especially outside of urban centers.  GameStop has its place, even if the nerdragers don't like them.

Oh Gamestop. I was pretty much already deciding to just stop buying from them altogether but really this just enforces the decision.
If they don't want to promote competitors, fine, but the way they handled not promoting their competitors is ridiculous. Surely it has to be in violation of some kind of distribution agreement? To open and tamper with the contents of a product? Send them back and refuse to sell them with the coupons within them, sure, but don't just chuck them out and sell it like it was unopened.
Ah well. This will probably end up being good publicity for OnLive and more shitty publicity for Gamestop, which I can only be happy about. It's just a shame that Gamestop is often the sole dedicated physical game store for a lot of areas. Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, sure they all sell games, but it's kind of like the difference between bookstores and those stores. They carry less variety in the product, take less chances in what they'll stock, and just care less about the specific product in general. I've never gone into a Best Buy or a Wal-Mart and gotten a good opinion or suggestion for games, they almost never know anything about games. I don't get that from Gamestop that often either, to be fair, but at least I'm marginally more likely to.
