GameStop Offers Up a Sort of Apology for the Whole Deus Ex Thing

At the very least, it sounds like some customers will be getting free stuff out of the deal.

No Caption Provided

GameStop has not had a particularly brilliant week. Immediately following its forcible removal of OnLive bonus codes in copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution for the PC, the company suddenly found itself inundated with enraged (and rightful) hurlings of vitriol in the direction of the retailer's management and its policies regarding selling opened games as new--not to mention physically removing content, even if it is for a competing brand, from copies of games. After Square Enix, Deus Ex's publisher, inexplicably apologized for a problem that was only tangentially its fault, GameStop has finally come out and said something beyond a simple reaffirmation that it wasn't cool with a competitor's promotion being sold at its stores.

Sent in an email to GameStop customers today, CEO Paul Raines offered up the following half-apology and goodwill offering:

Dear GameStop customer,
Earlier this week, GameStop removed a competitor's coupon from standard edition PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a recent release by Square Enix. We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor's offer. We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the publisher of this game. And for this, we are truly sorry.

For your inconvenience, we would like to offer you a free $50 GameStop gift card and a Buy 2 Get 1 Free pre-owned purchase. We want to earn back your trust and confidence in the GameStop experience. Please bring in this email and your store receipt or order confirmation from GameStop.com and present it to a Game Advisor.

Sincerely,
Paul Raines
CEO, GameStop

While it's unarguably great news that anyone who purchased a copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution for the PC (and still has their receipt) will apparently get these free offers, Raines and GameStop PR's unwillingness to straight-up say "We should not have removed these coupons from the product in question" effectively implies that GameStop isn't really sorry that they did it in the first place. Some might chalk it up to legal language wrangling, in an effort to avoid admitting a more specific "our bad!" that could potentially turn into some kind of lawsuit down the road. Still, all Raines really admits to is that it was pretty jacked up that customers were brought into this mess between a retailer and a publisher, which is but a fraction of the issue at hand.

If you're one of the customers who picked up your PC copy of Human Revolution at GameStop, go forth informed, and get your free games on. Then I suggest doing as I will do, and never, ever purchase anything from this company again.

While they should have sent the entire shipment back to Square Enix instead of removing the coupon I don't blame them for not promoting a direct competitor.  If the game would have had a coupon for Target in it I highly doubt Wal-mart would have sold it in their stores.

Kudos to OnLive's marketing department for getting Gamestop to contribute to this rather strange but very successful viral campaign for their product.  So many people had probably never heard of OnLive until this nonsense got them front page status on pretty much every major gaming site.

@DocPorpoise: GameSpot doesn't think it's great, they're losing money. They won't want to do it again

This is why I usually only buy games from EB when they're clearly selling near or below cost to clear inventory.

Maybe I'm a bad person, but I'm not boycotting Gamestop over this. Sure, it was a stupid fucking thing to do, but they are doing a pretty good job  making amends. Companies do dumb shit, because money. Get over it.

Between this, some of their past actions, and their current buy-back policy changes (IE, the fact that I had to sign two long-form papers and get FINGERPRINTED for wanting to sell back two games), I'm really contemplating just never going to Gamestop ever again.

Unless there is some amazing deal on a videogame, I try to avoid Gamestops at all costs due to stunts like this.

I haven't purchased anything from Gamestop in years. I do not condone giving my hard-earned money to to a company with such deceptive business practices.

I really don't understand this story.  No company in their right mind would sell a product with a coupon for a rival inside, why should Gamestop?

If Gamestop had a problem with it, they should not have sold the product at all. Instead, they removed the part of the package that they did not approve of, and sold it like new. Without notifying the publisher nor the consumer that they had taken this action.

The retailer tampered with a product and sold it as new. THIS is a problem, and highly unethical.

Don't get this "After Square Enix, Deus Ex's publisher, inexplicably apologized for a problem that was only tangentially its fault".  Square questionable behavior caused the situation which GameStop responded predictably contemptibly to.  Still, to me it seems clear that Square and on-Live intentionally withheld information on the promo in order to put a Tojan Horse on the shelves of the business, and GameStop's ethically bankrupt response doesn't excuse the other party's bad behavior in this, to my mind.

I know ragging on Gamestop is the cool thing to do and all, and they're obviously a bit overzealous with their pushing pre-order bullshit on everyone. Yes, this coupon fiasco was also sleazy, and they went about it (and, well, a lot of things) the wrong way. Granted. But, the fact is, 95% of their customers would never have used that coupon anyway. They're willing to give customers 50 bucks as a good faith gesture. And, from personal experience, I just took back a couple new-ish games I will never play again and got a significant chunk of change and a new game. From a cost-benefit standpoint, I ended up playing 3 new games to completion for about 25 bucks each (one of which I still own). So, while their business practices are shitty at best, from an economical standpoint, I've almost always had a good experience there.

It always amazes me how many times GameStop fucks around with its customers and people still shop from them. Has no one heard of online shopping before ? Why are so many people still using a brick and mortar shop, especially GameStop, when they can simply order online and not think twice about tampering ?

I honestly don't get why people freak out over the opened new games. Out of the 20 or so copies of a brand new game, they open one has a display case. If you bought an opened game from Gamestop it's because you got their last copy of a popular game or the game is so old they only have one copy and probably sell it for only $20 bucks new.
