GameStop Pulling Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC Off Shelves [UPDATED]

Retailer's response to today's backlash seems to be sending everything back.

An internal GameStop email with corporate instructions forwarded by an employee this afternoon.
An internal GameStop email with corporate instructions forwarded by an employee this afternoon.

UPDATE: Square Enix has issued an official statement regarding today's events, basically apologizing to GameStop for not informing the retailer about the coupon in advance of the game's release.

“As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third party coupon," said the company in a statement. "GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies."

"Square Enix invites gamers who want to purchase the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without additional coupons to buy the game at any one of over 4000 GameStop stores in North America," continued the statement, "or purchase a digital download copy online from www.gamestop.com. “

ORIGINAL STORY: GameStop dominated the conversation today, based on reports the retailer was opening copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PC, removing the coupon for a copy of the game through OnLive, sealing the games back up and selling them as "new."

Perhaps for a variety of reasons, possibly ranging from conversations between GameStop and Square Enix to backlash from basically the entire Internet, the company is now pulling all copies off store shelves.

A GameStop employee forwarded me an email (as seen above) sent to every store, announcing the move.

"At this time please pull all Regular PC editions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and place them in your backroom. These will be recalled at a later date.
As GameStop is developing a streaming service in our Spawn Labs Cloud Computing Division, the coupon that was included is for a competing service. We are returning all copies of the PC regular edition to the vendor in agreement with Square Enix.
Any unfulfilled reserves of the Regular PC Edition should be taken care of with the inventory set aside in your backroom.
Please honor any returns with a receipt."

GameStop issued a similar public comment about its original reasoning for opening the games.

"We pulled the coupons because, like all retailers, we prefer not to promote our competitors and their competing offerings and services in our stores," said a company spokesperson. "Unfortunately, the coupon was packed without our prior knowledge."

Both Square Enix and OnLive declined to comment on the matter.

Hang on! How is this doing GameStop any good? It just means the majority of people are going to go on Steam and purchase it.

Who the hell is running these companies?

That's actually not true. Those OnLive vouchers didn't come free - OnLive payed for some of the publication/production cost of Deus Ex HR PC version. Square/Enix shoud've been more careful in not representing/selling the product with a conflict of interest which these OnLive vouchers clearly represent as far as GameStop is concerned. On the other hand GameStop are cunts.

...why would you buy this game from gamestop at this point? You get a 2nd copy if you buy it ANYWHERE else. Gamestop has a copy that is worth at least $10 less, if not $30+ if you can sell that code. Or keep it and use it. Point is you get another copy of the game with your purchase.

Considering it's only $40 at Amazon in digital form anyone with broadband shouldn't be buying the standard edition from GS anyway. Just buy it at Amazon for the code, enter it into Steam and download it from there.

You'll be using Steam anyway.

It's so, so sad to see GameStop have such massive influence and power that Square is even apologizing because they need their business so much.

This does not affect enough people to actually damage GameStop's reputation or bottom line. Sorry, everyone. Also, even if GameStop corporate is full of goblins, many of them are run by perfectly nice people who hire perfectly nice employees. If you have one of those, support it, as brands may eventually change but employees remain the same.

Man, I miss EB Games.

Well that's why I don't buy my games at GameStop. You're not getting a new game, it's been opened therefor it's used in my opinion. Also GameStop is the most expensive video game store here in Sweden, $105,6 for a game. For that price I except it to be factory sealed.

Yeah I can see how Square should have told GameStop beforehand, but how GameStop initially handled it was...well, pretty fucking stupid.

You'd think Square might have a little more backbone. Ah well, it's not like I'll likely buy PC games retail again, and certainly not from Gamestop.

That would actually be more like if Diablo III came with a voucher for Dragon Age 3. But I get your point.

What if there would be a bonus disc with behind the scenes material. If the content was cluttered with OnLive-ads and coupons, would GameStop rip it out? Hell no!

They really should've just sent the copies back in the first place.

@TheMartino: Yes, it is ridiculous to sell a coupon that benefits your competitor so they shouldn't sell it. Make sense? Not rip it out of the box, repackage it and sell it off as "new". That's the issue people are having.

While Gamestop handled this situation HORRIBLY (opening new games and reselling them? really?), I do kind of feel for them in this case. It was shitty of Square-Enix to make it clear to them that there would be OnLive vouchers in the package in the first place. Obviously Gamestop doesn't want to be in the business of advertising their competitors. It's the same reason why EA is pulling games from Steam. With that said, again, they handled it terribly. They either should have pulled all the copies to begin with, or just put up with it and made sure it never happened again.
But this raises the question: is Gamestop going to stop carrying Steamworks games? Because if they're going to create an online store that sells PC games and open copies of games to rip out coupons I can't understand why they'd sell games that would require people to use their direct competitor's service. @S3kShun62 said:

There's a difference between selling opened copies of games and physically taking an item out of a game package that would be otherwise included and then selling it as new without the customer's knowledge that the item had been taken.

Besides, while Gamestops sell opened copies of games you can usually request a sealed copy.

lol, i'm not gonna sit here and play devils advocate, but really? To anybody who says "I'm never shopping there again" Good for you. The only problem with that is that none of you will actually do that. You'll get sick of waiting for your game via amazon, or you'll want the pre-order bonus they have, or some such slop. Then you'll stop in, pick it up, and not think a thing about it again till they do something HORRIBLE like this again. Then, a few months later, you'll forget and go back on Skyrim launch... the joys of idiocy.

It's a nondescript PR statement.  The true fallout will likely never be known to consumers.  My guess is that Gamestop'll get shafted on the next game release from SE.

My main problem here is selling opened tampered copies as new. If they have a problem with the contents if the game case then return it. If they really had as problem that should have been their first response, not tamper copies and sell them new. Seriously though....who buys pc games at gamestop... Go to steam our even amazon before that.. Amazon had given me do many random 20 dollar gift cards for buying games from them anyway

All my local Gamestop's don't sell PC games.

This is a lot of hoopla for something people can get on Steam or something. This just looks like a reason for people to be angry on the internet once more and harrass Gamestop employees. All amazing friends of mine at this one store.

Gamestop bashing is never out of style, apparently.

You're absolutely right sir! Gamestop bashing hasn't gone out of style! but you know what has? A corrupt and greedy corporation exploiting and lying to it's customers.

So much hate, but I guarantee you bend over and take it from the energy industry all the time. EDIT: Unless you happen to live somewhere other than the U.S., in which case you get a pass.

Square Enix's Eunuch Division must have handled this. Gamestop just opened, took out and subsequently resold, games that have not got the full content that was supposed to be available with them. Grounds for legal action? Hell yes. Who the fuck does that? Gamestop are petty children. Fucking disgraceful to begin with. Square did nothing wrong, Gamestop have fucked with their customers, and are now refusing to stock a game on a platform?

If I were Square Enix, I'd say fuck them, and refuse to distribute Deus Ex, or any product produced by the company in Gamestop. A friendly little reminder not to fuck with my companies products might make them change their tune.

I can't believe I'm siding with Square, but hey, lesser of two evils right?

You're kidding yourself if you don't think Best Buy or Amazon or Steam feel the exact same way.  They're businesses plain and simple; they compete.  This would be like buying an EA game on Steam that gave you a code to download a game on EA's service.
