Gears Of War 3 Pushed Back To Fall 2011

No, the game isn't broken or anything. Business is to blame.

Microsoft and Epic Games have made a decision that's sure to make more than a few Marcus Fenix fans scream "Aw, c'mon!" Gears of War 3 has been pushed back to Fall 2011 from its original April release date. The reason for the delay is not for a lack of polish or quality. Rather, it appears we'll be hacking Locusts to bits a smidge later than we expected because of cold, hard, and sorta unspecified business reasons.

Here's the official statement on the matter passed around to press:

"Gears of War 3 promises to be the biggest entertainment launch of 2011. The teams at Microsoft Game Studios and Epic Games have done great work thus far readying the title for release in the spring of 2011. However, we’ve elected to move the launch of Gears of War 3 until fall 2011 to make it the marquee title for the holiday season."

So, there you have it. Microsoft wants Gears 3 to be the Microsoft-published game of 2011, and there's no better time to capitalize on the even more massive amount of marketing likely to accompany this decision than a holiday release. Word on the street is that people like to give games to other people as presents around this time, so sales tend to skyrocket with a good push.

In a statement following the aforementioned statement (dual statements!) on the official Gears website, Epic Games executive producer Rod Fergusson reiterated that this delay was a result of a business decision. He also teased that you'll be hearing much more about the game's rather promising multiplayer component--which includes four-player co-op, and the new Beast mode which pits man-as-beast against man--in the near future as Epic opens up its HQ for a press visit next week.

"I know fans are going to be disappointed with the new release date, but rest assured that this is a business decision between partners, and not a quality issue. Gears 3 was on track to be the most polished Gears of War game ever when it released in April, and this additional time allows us to polish it that much more before it hits shelves next fall. Next week we have a major multiplayer press visit at Epic HQ, and I'm really looking forward to the fans seeing and hearing about Gears 3 versus multiplayer for the first time. Lots more exciting news to come."

Oh well...enough other awesome stuff coming out next year, and I prefer having my main huge multiplayer game for the year to come out around Q3 really, just make sure it's awesome please Young Clifford.

Bummer I had high hopes that the Spring release for Gears meant Microsoft had a new exclusive they were gonna release next fall.

Wow that really sucks ass.

Rest assured it's not because the game isn't finished, we just want to make as much money as we can.

Well fuck you Microsoft, how bout that?

You have no other exclusive games so you do this to your only one? Good stuff

It happens sometime but like everyone says, there are lots of cool games coming out before it in 2011 so I'm not to bummed about this.

I can still wait. I've waited for Duke Forever since 1997, and I can wait for this a little longer

Posted by GilbertMordinAndSullivan

You know, this could actually be great for the game. If it was on track to be done and polished by spring, imagine how much better they can make it by the fall.

Posted by brownsfantb

They should have just announced it for the Fall to begin with. No one would have expected it to come out in April if they hadn't said anything anyway.

Posted by hanktherapper

Why not announce it for the holiday season in the first place?  When I heard the April launch date I knew it would be pushed back six months.

Posted by XenoNick

That sucks.

Wouldn't releasing it in April be more profitable because there probably won't be a lot of competition? I mean, if you're the only major title coming out in a period, people are more likely to buy that title right? Look, for example, at the launch of ME2 last January.
Posted by simian

makes me wonder what they had intended to release as their premier title for holidays.

Since the first half of 2011 is now suddenly stacked, this is not a huge deal.  In fact, the wallet is breathing a small sigh of relief.

it's gears of war, it doesn't run away from the competition, the competition runs away from it

Really Microsoft? Really?

When you put it like that then all delays seem meaningless.

Shocked? no. Disappointed? no. Hungry, HELL YES! Waffles inbound!

Posted by Toxin066

Honestly though. Who didn't see that coming?

These push backs are really starting to get annoying *sighs*

Aw. Come on.

Posted by MisterMouse

well that is a bummer.

Edited by Lazyaza

Eh tonnes of other games coming out next year so whatever. Also the less chance of frustrating or buggy sequences in a game the better.

Posted by Lukaz

I better be blinded by the additional polish.

Posted by Everyones_A_Critic

God damn it. I really hope the multiplayer isn't so infuriating this time around. Gears 2 just felt so cheap whenever you'd die. I wasn't very good at it but it didn't even seem fair sometimes. I'll buy Gears 3 to see how the trilogy ends but unless they address the balancing issues that were rampant in the second one I won't be online.

Ahhh crap.

Running away from Dargon age 2 and Final fantasy 14 I guess

There's a big crossover between gears fans and 100+ hour long RPG fans...

come one, seriously (3.0)?

Edited by CommodoreGroovy

I think that's fine. When Gears 2 came out the multiplayer was very unpolished, the game was almost to the point of being broken. Considering the developers get an extra year (if you consider the two year cycle) to develop the game, there should be no excuse for every part of this game to be amazing on release day. If anything, this delay only makes me more excited for the game.

So Gears 3 might go up against Uncharted 3 in Fall of 2011? Interesting...

Posted by Th3dz

November 7 is my guess. Third time now.

Posted by Tennmuerti

lol Gears
whatever

@Philzpilz:  i think we can all safely assume nothing is running away from ff14.

FUUUUUUUUUUU

Posted by Rasgueado

I love that statement... summarizes to: Hey man... we're sorry you're going to have to wait longer to play our game. Stay tuned though! We're going to talk to you a lot more about how awesome it is really soon! Hearing more about how finished and awesome it is should make the wait *far* more tolerable for our fans out there.

This lets me think that Microsoft has got nothing on its plate for fall of 2011, which isn't a good sign for them.

How could anyone hate you, Mr. Nicholson?

Posted by Beechbone

Well, that's pretty lame but understandable from Microsoft's point of view. To add a word of hope, maybe the game turned out to be just too damn good to be released in a month like March?

Posted by AlisterCat

Very annoying. Waiting another half a year purely because of business, not development, is just not going to be acceptable to the user. Such a shame.

Edited by TorMasturba

I feel like this game would sell just as many copies all year round, I mean it's well known enough to the point that it'd be bought by all the people that're even remotely interested in ever buying it.

Ah well, I'll probably buy it, but it's no skin off my nose that it's been pushed back...
Gears of War is fun, but it never seems to capture my interest for all that long, so I'm not bothered.

Just wait until the hype machine kicks in, hopefully I'll miss a lot of it but I'll probably get dragged in eventually, DAMN MY IMPULSIVE PURCHASING STREAK!
Video games for life!

@Faint: Yeah, I'm sure they could care less about FF14...it's a dying series

This has never happened in the history of movies, TV, or anything else entertainment related.
