Giant Bomb Sells Out

The end of the world is upon us--we've started running advertising.

It's been a little while since I checked in with you on our plans for advertising. Actually, I guess it's more of a plan to keep the lights on and keep Giant Bomb up and running by ensuring that we've got some money coming in.

Well, today is the day that we can say that there's some money coming through the door. Today's the day that you can find a bit of advertising around the site in the form of an MPU--that's the secret codeword that means "Flash-based rectangle that wants you to buy or do something."

But you won't actually see that ad too often. Part of our philosophy here is that the ads will be a little more effective if they aren't completely frustrating and obtrusive. So we aren't stickering up every single corner of the site with boxes and animated men with chainsaw-guns saying "Pardon me, have you heard of this Gears of the War 2 video game we're releasing next month?!!?!?!" Instead, it seems like a tasteful reminder that says "excuse me, not to interrupt, but I felt you should know about the ongoing conflict between the humans and the Locust over on planet Sera."

You'll see any given ad on the site no more than a few times a day--and then it simply won't appear for the rest of that day. Furthermore, our plan states that less than 40 percent of our pages will have ads on them at all. Though, considering the current state of the economy and how that's impacting the advertising market, I don't expect we'll actually hit that 40 percent mark anytime soon.

As for our involvement in the ad process, it's limited to absolute veto power. All of the advertising will cross through us before it goes onto the site, and if there's something we're not comfortable with, like an awful game or ugly, noisy ads or something, we intend to shoot it down.

We also have a few more ideas on money and ways you can help keep us in business that we'll be looking at in the coming months, including merchandise. Actually, I'm staring at a box full of hoodies with Luchadeer on the back right now. I should probably figure out what we're going to do with those... hmm...

Anyway, before I get too far off-topic here, I'll just close by saying that we've spent a lot of time formulating plans to ensure that we can run ads on this site and cover our costs without ruining the site in the process. That said, we definitely value your feedback on this stuff. If the advertising is way too crazy for you--or if you think we're handling it properly--let us know.  Thanks.

As long as it is not as annoying like a handful of ads on Gamespot and on IGN, I'm cool with that.
But at least promise me this, Don't put those video ads on your reviews and other videos!
They kinda piss me off!

Other than that I'm cool with it!

Hey Jeff!

I would be very interested if you put a payed membership up on this site. but make it really cheap. Something like $0.50-$5.00 (I'm english so I only have a partial idea of what is classed as very cheap when it comes to US dollers.)

But something of a low price, as I think this would attract virtually everybody who is a member already to get a subscription.
Even the younger generations could get this membership due to the cheapness of it. Plus there should be an age limit on certain prices.
For example: If a 7 year old (all the way upto an 11yr old) wants a subscription he/she should only need to pay $0.50 (This would also be a cool way to control the age censitive content, i.e.: if there is any swearing on your podcasts, which there is sometimes alot of lol, then you can simply bleep it out when your doing the editing of it. Or simply edit out any age inapropriate conversation strings).
But if an18 year old (or older) wants a membership it should be like $3.00 -$5.00 (depending on what you think of this idea), and that's all.
That way it's so cheap that people would be silly not to buy a subscription and get that little bit of extra quality content with faster download speeds.
Also the advertising would still exist on the subscription memberships, but only at a severely reduced amount like say 10-15 percent of all pages instead of the maximum ads percentage of 40 percent of all pages.
I think you guys are gonna have to make a medium if not a good profit if you want this site to really, really succeed.
And I'm not talking about succeeding at rolling in a tonne of money, I'm talking about succeeding in whatever your real goals are for this site (Hopefully you do end up rolling in money for your efforts here, but hopefully that is simply just a by-product of your goals and not the goal itself)... (I'm not talking about you turning into another version on those comglomerate Cnet bastards who try to control Gamespot, but I think you get the picture none the less...)
Hopefully you consider this a good idea. If not, then please send me an email an tell me what your actual goals/wants for the site are.

If you managed to read this jeff, thanks man for continuing to do what you love doing, it means alot to me and I'm guessing alot to everybody else aswell.
(btw this thanks includes brad, ryan and everyone else too. goes out to every person who works on this site. thanks guys!)

There should be adverts on specific game pages. Like, I may not of bought Killzone 2 yet so I go to their GiantBomb wiki to see more info about it, I decide I want to buy it and look! There's an add to buy the game from Amazon or something. That would be a nice feature.
