Harry Potter Next Up On Lego's Agenda?

Mega-selling building block franchise, meet mega-selling boy wizard.

This is not at all the Lego Harry Potter you think it is.

Lego Star Wars. Lego Indiana Jones. Lego Batman. Now try this one: Lego Harry Potter. Rolls right off the tongue, no?

CVG seems to think so. They're reporting J. K. Rowling's boy wizard extraordinaire will be the next franchise to get the cutesy building-block treatment with a Lego-focused action game, though no specific sources or substantiation are listed.

You may be aware the Half-Blood Prince movie was pushed back to next summer, and Lego games have a habit of finding their way to store shelves just in time to coincide with some other big, related mass-media release. So odds on this one arriving around the middle of next year, if it exists at all, are high.

The franchise definitely has the right characters to fit all the existing Lego-game archetypes.

  • Tough character with melee attack: Hagrid
  • Female with exceptional jumping powers: Hermione (with Wingardium Leviosa, natch)
  • Tiny person who can fit through tight spaces: Dobby
  • Characters who can build objects with their minds: Damn near everyone

I'm unashamed to admit a rabid appetite for the Harry Potter books in their time, but I can't express a similar interest in a new Lego version of the franchise. As I noted in my Lego Indy review, this series has gotten more than a little formulaic over its last several installments. I'd like to see something new happening with Lego games next time around, but then, this series was probably never meant for you and me in the first place. That we were able to enjoy even the first several of them feels more than anything like a happy accident.
