LittleBigPlanet 2's Creation Tools Are Completely Ridiculous

Ridiculous in a good way, that is.

It's starting to look like you'll be able to make damn near anything you can think of with the content creation tools in LittleBigPlanet 2. At an in-depth demo today, Media Molecule's Alex Evans talked almost solely about all the new ways this sequel will let you create your own new levels and game types. He didn't even really take the time to show off the developer's pre-made story mode that will be in the game. That ought to tell you where the developer's focus is in this sequel.

Seriously, this is actually LittleBigPlanet 2.
Seriously, this is actually LittleBigPlanet 2.

I wish I could properly articulate what it's like to listen to a brilliant guy like Evans wax technical about all the new stuff in this game, but really, you'd have to hear it straight from him to get the full effect. I can tell you that the cap on objects, triggers, and other elements in your levels has drastically increased. I can tell you that sorting, searching, and downloading user-created stuff is going to get a lot faster and easier both in the game and on a new website called LBP.me which will be launching with the game (the latter will give you a social feed of your friends' creations and even let you queue up downloads that will begin automatically when you boot up the game later).

I can tell you that you can pull up a floating circuit board of all things to wire functionality directly into your creations. Want to make a car? Pop up the Controlinator (a Dual Shock-shaped circuit board) and wire the controller button you want to be the accelerator to the rear wheel of your vehicle. You can also finally add real non-playable characters (sackbots) to your levels instead of making those creepy fake characters out of background elements. Those guys can take scripted behaviors and voice acting, and you can control camera angles to make cutscenes.

The list goes on and on. You'll be able to make your own music, via some kind of in-game editor Media Molecule isn't talking about yet. You'll be able to link levels together, so you could upload a whole sequence of levels together to form a linear playable episode, or maybe a best-of level that serves as a gallery for a bunch of other hot new levels. My only thought in looking at all this potential is that Media Molecule had better be careful and not empower the players too much, or they may never have a reason to buy a LittleBigPlanet 3.

I loved LBP but made the mistake of playing the SHIT out of the beta, when the retail game came along and I was forced to sit through the tutorials again for all the creation tools I just couldn't be bothered!

There's 50 levels in LBP1, all very fun to play. I got my money's worth in the game without even touching the creation tools.  Then me and my little cousins got even more play time running through various levels created by other users, all without touching the create tools.

Don't mistake them giving you these creation tools as them not having made levels of their own. Remember that MM made a lot of these tools so that they could make a better game themselves, and there's even more levels in LBP2 than in LBP1.

In fact people even go to college to learn how to use Photoshop. And even once you do, you need to have a pretty good creative sense in order to make something neat. That's how I've always viewed this franchise. When so much of the appeal of this game is the huge creation tools, it makes me not want to sit there and learn how to use them. And even if I did, what exactly am I doing? Making a level. Isn't that what I already pay money to other developers for?  I feel like if they focused on making a really awesome and fun game first, then threw in the level creation stuff later, it would be a lot more appealing to me. No joke. I never even bothered doing the tutorials in the first one - I was too busy playing the game. Plus, anyone that still complains about having to make levels in LBP is so stuck in Hate Mode is probably not worth the trouble to convince otherwise - let's just enjoy LBP2 while they sulk in a corner.

Don't say that.  The stupid pop-it object limits that made saving new levels you made fail without error message were from that train of thought.

Voo-doo is the only thing that can explain all of this. They've allowed you to create more types of games but they've made the tools simpler to use? Media Molecule, you have my bow.

I'm down for this because I'm a creation dabler.  I use Poser instead of full on Maya (though I am learning).  I started out on GIMP and have now moved to Photoshop.  SO yeah, I can see learning LBP creation tools to make games instead of learning Flash.  (Tried that, not fun. :p )

The original LBP almost made me go out and buy a PS3 but I thought maybe I should really not spend the money for just one game,  now I feel a PS3 is worth it for just Mod-nation racing and LBP2 and they would keep me etertained for ages.

this one looks like it is doing just that imo.  It's basically you paying for a 60 dollar game but getting access to tons of creative minds.  I'm one of those Photoshop people you are talking about....I learned it before I went to college but took graphic design and learned it much more (along with all the other Adobe Suite programs).  Personally, I was content with playing other people's levels in LPB 1...I didn't even make my own.

Well thats a clear sign that this game is not made for you.. You can still play the great singleplayer, and when your done there are tons of user made levels to play. You never have to touch the creation tools if you dont want to, but if you dont your really missing out on alot of the magic of LBP.

I never got to deep into the creation stuff on the first game, might of been due to the controls. Hoping the Move will make creating stuff alot easier, seems like the best opportunity for it.

It really should be amazing to see what people make in the new game. In the first game I saw things that I never thought would be possible with the creation tools; now that it looks like you can make almost anything, it will be amazing to see what kind of mind blowing things people make.

I cant wait to see what the many unique minds create with this! I mean some of the levels for the original were pretty incredible and mind blowing, but to see what people will do with this! hopefully it doesnt scare people away with how much you can do.
