Mass Effect 2 Coming To PS3 In January 2011

Exclusivity, schmeclusivity!

The persistence of rumors claiming that the Mass Effect franchise would be coming to the PS3 might have stolen some of the thunder from Electronic Arts' unveil this morning, but the fact that Mass Effect 2 is PS3-bound is still pretty surprising.

During EA's Gamescom press conference, BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka took the stage and announced that the second game in the sci-fi RPG series would be coming to Sony's console. He didn't comment on what fresh or special features the PS3 edition of the game could potentially have, and he didn't talk about the first game in the series. He did, however, peg a release window for ME2 PS3: January 2011.

The press release that followed Dr. Muzyka's unveil isn't much of a help on the feature front either, mainly because of how weirdly vague it is. According to EA, this edition "will include the full Mass Effect 2 game and hours of bonus content." It's unknown if "bonus content" is referring to previously released bits of DLC or something akin to a documentary disc--or something else entirely.

Above is the announcement trailer. It doesn't shed any light on most of our pressing questions either, but it does show off a crisp version of the game that I'd imagine can make any PS3 fan feel all funny on the inside. (You guys feel funny, right?)

Mass Effect 2 on PS3 sounds grand, but there's a problem: PS3 owners don't have access to the first game, meaning they'll start out in ME2 dry and without any save file to transfer over. Part of the fun in ME2 was in discovering how your choices from the first game made an impact in the second, both in terms of relationships and story. BioWare played up those wrinkles in-game, and is continuing to do so for the third title, according to interviews. That said, BioWare doesn't seem like the kind of developer to leave this kind of thing hanging, so fingers crossed they come up with a solution before next January.

I played Me2 on a friend's 360 and freaking adored the hell out of it, so this should make me very excited. Instead, not having the an Me1 save completely defeats the purpose of what Bioware established in creating an over-arching story in the franchise. Looks like I'll probably end up buying a 360 (again).

If you were really hyped about a particular game, surely these days it's not  a gigantic stretch to just buy both a 360 and a PS3.  At worst you could buy a pre-owned console for about the same price as 3 new retail discs.

For ME2 however, considering the 3rd game is supposed to finally resolve all these decisions you made over the past two games. I'd imagine the PS3 version's going to be somewhat short changed.

" Every year it seems like the point of exclusive console games diminishes. "
Except that this type of thing only seems to happen for the 360. I can't think of any PS3 games that started off exclusive, and then later ended up being made for the 360. However, that happens all the time with the 360.  Someone could probably rattle off a whole list of games that were at one time a 360 exclusive, but then came to the PS3. So really it's more that 360 exclusivity has become the joke. Not console exclusivity in general.  It seems like every time I get ready to go buy a 360, I hear something like this, and then realize that I don't really need one... /shrug "
I can actually think of plenty of PS3 exclusives/Sony franchises that made their way over to the 360. Assassin's Creed, Red Dead Redemption and Final Fantasy XIII are the only three games I can think of that started development as PS3 exclusives (or in the case of FF13, a PS2 exclusive), but there are many, many more franchises that were primarily regarded as Sony franchises last generation but are now multiplatformers like GTA, Silent Hill and Devil May Cry. Sure, Star Ocean 4 and Tales of Vesperia were originally released for the 360, but last generation you wouldn't have seen those on a Microsoft console at all.

I never played the first and rate ME2 as my favorite game of all time, so not playing the first one won't be an issue. Also just had a friend try to play through ME but he just couldn't get around the choppiness or something, he's on to ME2 now and loves it! Note: I did watch someone's full play through on youtube the week before the release which I would suggest if you want to understand the story, takes about 5-6 hours.

When my xbox 360 died I replaced it with a PS3 Slim, this was around the time Mass Effect 2 was released. Having played the first one to death and, up to this point, not having a proper means of playing the second one, I look forward to January and the ability to fire up a PS3 version of mass Effect 2.
